Aircon problem

Featured Replies

Help needed. I have searched but cannot find an answer.

My aircon works fine provided the fan is set at speed 4. Anything less and the aircon switches off. It used to work at all fan speeds. The fan itself works at all 4 speeds. Any thoughts, peeps?

Thanks in anticipation.

Have you tried getting fault codes from the aircon ECU? Mine doesn't work at all, and is throwing up

Address 08: Auto HVAC
Controller: 6Y0 820 045

00818 - Sensor for Evaporator Outlet Temperature (G263)
30-00 - Open or Short to B+

I haven't looked at it further, but I've found the how-to thread. Great forum this, unlike the sucky renault one. All you get there is no advice or 'take it to a dealer, that's dangerous', hurrr.  :notme:

^ The Evap sensor is a common fault.  Easy DIY replace.

As for not working below speed four - that sounds odd.  Only usually happens if blower motor resistor failed but then fan wouldn't work on 1-3.

Thanks people. I don't have a code reader. Dave, that was my reasoning - at least I sort of ruled out the fan motor switch.

I am going to have a go at changing the resistor. I have found them on e-bay for £6.99 inc p & p. At that price, it is a simple and cheap way of eliminating 1 thing. Maybe the resistor is failing slowly ( here's hoping!)

I'd guess that the resistor, hedgehog thing, will fail in the lower speeds first as it is dropping more voltage and at the maximum speed is shorted out or not in circuit - so the fan runs. I hope that you are getting a reasonable quality resistor at that price or you might be replacing it again soon.

Also, make sure that the pollen filter is replaced as if it is choking the air flow, then the resistor will not get enough air to cool itself - so will fail quickly.

Absolutely, I've changed 3 (2x Fabia and 1x polo).  Its a bit fiddly but persist as there's a guide somewhere on here with photos if you search.  For the price, like you say, its cheap troubleshooting!

Each resistor pack I changed had failed at around the 8 year point.

Right. Part ordered on Sunday - in the end I paid £8.99 inc p&p and a 2 year warranty. I imagine the warranty is worth the paper it is written on. Anyway we'll see.

Part ordered Sunday arrived Tuesday lunchtime. Very good.

Took all of 45 mins to fit tonight but what a performance. Getting the old one out was easy enough once I located it. I didn't take the pictures down to the car and couldn't see the resistor. Having retrieved the instructions, everything made sense and locating the part  was easty. Whoever said there isn't much room wasn't kidding. Putting the new one back in was a right carry on. The thing fitted into the hole ok but getting it to turn thro 45 degrees was really difficult. Anyway, I got that done and now I have functioning air con. Even if the new resistor fails fairly quickly, I now know what the issue is and would consider perhaps getting a genuine part. I would rather have wasted £9 than the £39 that a Skoda part cost if it turned out the resistor was not faulty.

I found tucking the heater hose up out of the way created a little more room. In truth, it took almost as long to get the glovebox back in as it did to change the resistor.

So, a huge thanks to all on the forum who responded and to those who took the trouble to prepare the instructions and post them. As ever, I am indebted to you.

I've used both genuine and non genuine packs (as you said £6 vs £40) and both are still working fine.  Its 3 resistors at the end of the day... pence.  Glad you managed.  It is a fiddle isn't It.  I remember how frustrated I got when I changed the first one...
