  1. I had to do the same thing when my driver mirror was hit some time ago. Check your replacement mirror - the "mirror" should pop out if you gently apply pressure with a screwdriver, either from the front of the mirror, or preferrably from behind the mirror, accessing it through the mounting hole. You'll find two wires attached to the mirror with crimps. Gently remove these, taking a note of what colour goes where. You should now see the metal frame - there is a screw at the bottom of the plastic assembly that secures the frame. Once you remove this, the whole frame with motors comes out. To remove the old one from the car, use a flat blade screwdriver to remove the tweeter from the door - it's simply clipped in, so use the screwdriver to gently lever it towards you. Once it comes off, unplug the tweeter unit. You'll see a cable assembly coming from the mirror - this is secured behind the door with a clip. If you're really lucky, you can lever this cable up enough to be able to unclip it from the door wirring loom. If unlucky, you might have to remove the door trim. Once this cable is unclipped, it's just a matter of unscrewing the 3 torx screws holding the mirror in place, and then it's off, allowing you to swap bits as needed. Regards tbxp
  2. The guides holding the glass in are metal, not plastic. The plastic part that's broken appears to be close to the motor.
  3. I've often wondered what could go wrong with a simple 2 wire loom. Anybody any ideas? My own thoughts are perhaps maybe it's not the loom itself, but poor contacts at the key/barrel and dash ends. Maybe if the connectors are pushed on/off a few times that would restore better contacts? I'll find out myself as my own octy is starting to exhibit this behavior... Regards, tbxp
  4. Hi folks. Looking for some advice please with my octavia's passender side window regulator. Last week I was unlucky enough to have the passenger window smashed by vandals. Took the car to the insurer's glass fitters, where they did a decent job up until the technician tried to close the window. Window went down Ok, but then he tried to put it up - it got to the top of the door, made this terrible grinding noise, then a snap, and the window fell to the bottom of the door. Looks like the plastic holding the cabling broke. The tech then blamed that on wear and tear, but I don't think so. Window was fine before the incident. Doesn't look like I'm going to get any satisfaction from the glass fitters, so before I shell out on a new regulator, is there any pitfalls to fitting a new one? Is there a sensor to tell the glass when it's at the top/bottom of the door? Any advice gratefully received. Regards, tbxp
  5. Hi folks, now that the summer's starting to come along, it's aircon time! My octy only has a single button - AC on or off. When the fan is on position 1, aircon works fine, light on the AC button illuminates, and that's fine. However, when I switch the fan blower to positions 2 - 4, the AC light goes out and there's no aircon. Is the fan blower switch linked to the AC in some way? Regards, TBXL
  6. This is strange, tried the switch today and the motor came on. Works in all 4 speeds. Wonder if it's the switch or a dead spot on the motor...
  7. Sorry should have said, the fuse is intact...
  8. Hi folks. I have an octavia '99 1.9 TDI with a problem. Looks like the motor's failed on the fan blower - My car has simple aircon with a 4 position speed switch for the fan. Motor seems dead, but I can hear a relay click when I move the switch. Problem is, as there's no manual for the octavia, how easy is it to get/change the blower motor? Any advice please? Regards, TBXP
  9. I've seen a lot of this kind of thing with tiscali/wannado ADSL installs. A lot of the time it's down to faulty filters, even from new. Basically these companies get the cheapest and nastiest filters going. I guess you don't have a spare one there to try? I use adsl nations XF-1E filter both at home and for testing other lines. Take a look at http://www.adslnation.com/support/filters.php for more on good and bad filters.... . Also am I reading this right? The filter's the first and only thing plugged into the BT socket, and you connect the phone and the modem via the filter? I've seen where there's a splitter first, then filter, and that's a nono....
  10. Thanks everybody, given me a starting point to go from. Don't have VAG-COM sadly, anybody in Glasgow with one?
  11. Was that 80 pounds for supply and fit of the coil reader, or just for the part only? I'll have a look for this at the weekend, anybody know where exactly on the steering column it's located? Thanks TBXP.
  12. It's not relay 109. This was changed some time back after an entertaining "stop" on a busy (3 lane) bridge, during rush hour, with no breakdown lane. Hooboy that was fun...... :( . And the key light didn't flash when 109 was faulty.... . No this happens before starting - turn the key so that all lights are on and the ignition key symbol flashes. Not all the time thank goodness, but I'd like to find out what it could be before it goes permanent. If the light remains solid, I can start the car and run it until I switch it back off. Then it's a lottery as to if the fault will show again.
  13. Hi folks, An intermittent problem has started on my '99 octaviia TDI. Sometimes when I go to start the car, all lights come on OK pre start, except for the ignition key light, which flashes. If I then try to start the car, engine turns then dies. It's not a key problem I think as I'm now running with the spare key, and the fault still happens. Any suggestions please? TBXP.
  14. Sorted - pollen filter was the problem! V fiddly to fit, and couldn't remove the plastic cover, but was able to remove and fit filter by prising up the cover.
