  1. Cheers folks, found another forum that mentioned the same type of issue. said to put the wipers on and try move them by hand, got the wipers working perfectly now and no issue. If it is the spindles that need re greasing, is that something that would need immediate work, or could i get away with it for another while.
  2. Lovely, Now there was no straining noise or anything when the wiper was turned on, just no movement, and they have been working perfectly up until then. Would this not be an issue that starts off intermittently and gradually get worse over time, as opposed to being a sudden acute issue? *The issue was not discovered by me my girlfriend has the car about an hours drive away and she woke up to the problem this morning. so it'll be this even before i get to look at it myself.*
  3. Hey all, Woke up this morning to find the wipers on my Octavia Tour were not working, they were functioning perfect up until last night, the water still flows when you pull the stalk so i'm thinking (hoping) that it's just the fuse for the motor? Does that sound feasible, also would anyone have any idea about the location of the correct fuse to inspect, i'm fine when it comes to mechanical tinkering but when it comes to electrical I would be quite the amateur and the most i could do myself would be inspect or change a fuse. Cheers!
  4. So finally got around to getting the cables replaced. All seems to be back to normal, see attached for offending problem, hidden behind the spring hence why I didn’t see it on initial inspection and only because evident when I got properly under the car. also had my timing belt and alternator pulley replaced so I’m sitting on 472’000 km with a recently replaced fan belt, timing belt, alternator pulley, and a new clutch and flywheel within the last 2 years, so she should keep me going for another while at least! NCT/MOT on Monday so hopefully no nasty surprises there!!
  5. I can just imagine, friend of mine had an old mini cooper with no power steering and it was an eye opening experience to drive, can't imagine what the big bulky diesel would have been like!
  6. So my weekend plans got somewhat derailed by the fact that on saturday as I was 120km into my 200km journey, the fan belt decided to split in half going from approx 2-3cm wide to only being 1cm wide, while the 1 cm section stayed sitting on the pulleys working away. Somehow made it the rest of the journey and got it sorted, but my time i had allocated to the handbrake she had to be handed over to get that sorted. Very frustrating as i had been putting off replacing the fan belt as i have it booked in to do the timing belt in two weeks so I could have gotten them both done together.
  7. both of the levers on the calipers are moving the same distance. and both return to the stops when handbrake is disengaged.
  8. My bosses father used to be a mechanic so he has a nice shed with a pit in it, along with a mountain of tools for every little thing!
  9. Ordered the new cables and bracket so should have it by Friday, nice little project for myself over the weekend.
  10. That was my thought aswell, compared to diagrams i'd seen of the part i thought it was bent a bit more than it should. Now luckily enough replacing the cables that bracket only costs 4 euro so i was going to do that aswell while i was at it. so i'll see from there if that plays a significant part.
  11. Yeah they bot return to the stops when handbrake is off, theres no issue when the handbrake isn't engaged, i'll have a look when replacing the cables though.
  12. So went away for the weekend, drove for about an hour on relatively windy, awkward poor roads. i arrived at my destination and pulled the handbrake, only to find it working perfectly. little/no excess travel in the handbrake and held the car firm. Was a bit shocked as this had never happened before. drove the car again that evening and it was back to the way it always was. I'm still going to replace the cables this week, but does anything spring to mind for ye since i was driving on challenging road conditions and braking regularly?
  13. Yeah it’s fully seated in the guide tube. No issue from that point of view. Only thing I can think of now is the cable itself inside of the plastic sleeve is stretched and isn’t transmitting the movement to the rear.
  14. these are photos of the handbrake on and off
  15. What if pistons on one of the calipers isn't pushing properly? So the pads you had wore down, somehow a piston or 2 started pushing incorrectly, either at an angle or something. You replaced the pads, in doing so the garage pushed the pads into the caliper, forcing the pistons back level again, over the course of 1500 miles or so, they gradually go back to the bad angle or whatever it is and started to push incorrectly again. That would potentially explain the brake travel and wobble, and the time between service and when it happens. I Could also be completely wrong.
  16. I don't think they've fully seized because the arm on the caliper still moves when i apply the handbrake, only like 4 mm but still moves. That's a good possibility regarding the shoulder getting caught, it,s fairly low so i couldn't get fair enough under the car to properly inspect the guide tubes. Talking to the guy in local skoda parts desk he also speculated if the cable and guide tube had maybe fused together hence the minimal movement, but i can only find that out by trying to remove the old cable. I'll inspect the shoulder this evening, if that's the cause then popping it back into it's proper channel should fix it straight away. ("Should")
  17. From the NCT (MOT) last year, there was an imbalance of 31%, then got the new disks and callipers rebuilt and that came down to 16%. Overall performance is low though failure is 16% mine hit 22%.
  18. Haha oh fair enough! 😂 when handbrake is off its level but when its pulled the right cable moves but the left stays put. I’m just going to replace the two cables and see if it Sorts it.
  19. Hey folks, anyone got a picture handy of their handbrake adjustment bolt/bracket. mine seems only to be pulling on one side, bracket looks odd also I’m just wondering if it’s an aftermarket/notch replacement. Rear brakes were rebuilt and disks replaced a year ago. thanks in advance. Seàn
  20. My MK1 2006 1.9TDI Tour just ticked over 470'000 Kilometers last month.
