    Hi, I had a similar requirement to Nick. I resolved it by fitting a second battery in the boot. Using a 'smart splitter ' (as used in motorhomes etc. ) it is charged from the existing cigarette socket via the splitter. The splitter allows the main battery to charge the second battery ONLY when fully charged itself and isolates at other times it to prevent running the car battery flat. This arrangement does not involve altering the car wiring the splitter is quite cheap.
