  2. It seems that the flood thing was just a coincidence. After some detailed checking I removed the large sleeve that covers the wiring to the driver's door from the rest of the car. There I found one wire completely broken and several others on the point of breaking. I soldered in a short link on all of them and covered all the joints with heat shrink. The windows now work perfectly. The problem I have now is getting the sleeve/grommet back into place. I've given up for now, but I'll try again tomorrow.
  3. All the fuses are ok - unless I've missed some! Looks like it could a tricky problem. It really was stupid of me to go through that water.

  5. Can anyone throw any light on this window problem. Came through some floods yesterday. Didn't look too bad at first, but were actually a bit worse than I thought - I really shouldn't have gone through. However, went very slowly and got through ok - apart from one thing. That is that now the driver's side window won't move - passenger ok, although that wasn't at first. Any clues/pointers before I have to seriously delve into it?

  7. That's interesting to know because I'm not in a tremendous hurry to do it if it's not absolutely necessary- I just thought it was overdue. I may well change the car soon if I see something suitable, so keeping costs down is very much preferable. I see that a Gates cambelt kit and water pump costs around £135, so any idea what is the usual time it takes to fit these?
  8. Thanks to you both for the replies. From what you tell me I think I'll get it done fairly soon. The previous belt was fitted by Skoda main dealer, so I presume genuine parts were used. I now get my repairs done by an independent mechanic working alone - whom I trust completely - so I'll get him to do it, including the water pump. Thanks again.
  9. My Mk2 Fabia has done 98,000 miles. It's running well and is in good condition, but I'm thinking the cambelt needs replacing. It was changed just over 5 years ago at around 58,000 miles. My question is does it require fairly urgent replacement now, and does the water pump need to be replaced at the same time?
  10. Update on this clutch problem. Got the car back today, clutch and slave cylinder replaced. It was a solid flywheel. Total cost £550.
  11. Seems to be a bit of a minefield, best to leave it to the garage I think.

  13. That's interesting, and the mechanic that I spoke to didn't think it would be either - but do you think it will be the slave cylinder then?
  14. I'll suggest that if the garage come back to me and say that they can't find out for certain what type the flywheel is. If they have to remove the gearbox to check I'll be sort of committed to having everything replaced - when, if it is a DMF, I think I'd just opt for a master cylinder replacement first.
  15. I did look at that website and entered my VIN but it was still confusing - a number of options listed. I think I'll just leave it to the garage to sort out.

  17. I've looked in a number of places and can't get a definitive answer about what type of flywheel is on my car. If it is DMF then this probably means that the clutch replacement is going to be a lot more expensive. In which case I might just go for master cylinder replacement and hope that is the problem.
  18. Just had a word with the garage that are going to replace my clutch, etc, and it's booked in for some time next week. They did say that first they needed to find out if the car has single or dual mass flywheel - does anyone here know?
  19. I didn't, but I just asked my French speaking daughter. It's certainly not a compliment! People from Shropshire are called 'Salopians', so, after knowing what the French expression means, we must be careful where we use it! For those wondering what it means, apparently it means a 'whore or 'slut'.
  20. I'll suggest that to him. Shouldn't be that much extra work if he's doing the other things.
  21. Apart from, and until, this issue - which is unlikely to be the clutch itself - it feels pretty solid, and there has never been any problem with gear changes, etc.
  22. Thanks. Yes, I think I will go for it. The £500 is for the clutch and slave cylinder, doesn't include the master cylinder of course.
  23. I think that makes perfect sense.
  24. Saw the chap at the garage again this morning. He said a new master cylinder would be about £150, but he said that although it was very possible he didn't think that would be the problem. When I asked about changing the slave at the same time he said the gearbox would have to be removed for that - and therefore he recommended replacing the clutch at the same time - which he thought the more likely problem, total cost £500. I'm leaning towards that option, what would be the advice here?
