  2. I have done this. You are right the "head unit" in the dash is just a screen. You will need to remove the glovebox to gain full access to the actual headunit with the SD card slots. I used a parrot 1:1 SOT lead to fix between the headunit and the stock connector. I then tapped into these wires to avoid any change of damage to the factory wiring. There is a cone shaped grommet that can be accessed from the passenger footwell which is perfect for the power lead.
