  1. As the extension of the ULEZ looms, I am reluctantly forced to consider selling my 2008 L&K Octavia 2.0 TDi DSG estate. I need to replace it with something ULEZ compliant, and am thinking that a 2016 Superb estate should hit the spot. I got my Octavia when it was 3 yrs old and had high mileage (88k I think). Since then I have done about 6-7k a year of mostly urban miles in and around London and am up to 125k, and it has been utterly reliable with no mechanical issues at all. I am even still running on all the discs and pads from 2011 - although I get an advisory every year at MoT time, and I suspect this year they will be a fail. Having done so well with this strategy, I am tempted to repeat - ie get a 2016 2.0 TDi Superb DSG (150BHP, for the lower tax and better economy) with high miles (say 70-90k) and aim to keep it for at least 5 years doing low urban miles. But do the newer Euro 6 TDis cope with low mileage as well as my old engine? Or maybe I have just been lucky? I see quite a few people suggesting that for a car used mainly for short journeys a petrol engine is a better idea. And in particular that the TSI 1.4 works well in the Superb. If that is the case, will a high mileage petrol car be likely to have as much life left in it as a high mileage diesel? All thoughts very welcome. On a related issue, my Octavia is running fine. Because of some dents and scrapes (and because I can find only one key!) despite it being mechanically and electrically pretty faultless, I reckon its 2nd hand value is probably somewhere in the £1-1.5k range. It is due a major service now (with brake fluid change), and I reckon it will need new discs and pads all round to pass the MoT (also due now, but can be put off for six months). Would I be better to get the service done and brakes replaced (about £6-700) and sell now with a 12 month MoT, or just run it for another six months, skipping the service, brakes and MoT and sell it for what I can get once I have got a new car lined up (before October when the ULEZ extension comes in)? Again, all thoughts/comments very welcome. Thanks.
