  1. From Memory (quite old now, Colin entering his 5th decade shortly!)) a 3db rise in sound level equates to a doubling of perceived/ received sound (noise) Db is measured logarithmically so is a bit hard to equate in reality. Also externally measured the frequency is distance dependant - you can stand by a busy road and it's noisey then move say 10yds away and not hear it! Also topography can affect but as it's an airfield that should not be an issue. Wind direction and speed adds or subtracts as well. I can do a good line in spuds and ear defenders (spuds in tail pipe, ear defenders round lugs)
  2. Glad to see Colin is at last joining me on the laser trip. £10 HP mono laser = brill bit of kit and new ones are not to badly priced either.
  3. Credit should go to the guy for handing the pliers in - he could have just kept quiet etc. Also credit to PF operative who put it all right with out a massive paperwork mountain. PF have a poor reputation (possibly earned) but this does show some initiative by local depot. Last item I sent I made a plywood box for - buyer said just put it in a cardboard box ! No way it weighed in at north of 20kgs. Packaging is important and supplier should be reminded of that.
  4. I did it twice on my only test 47 yrs ago and examiner told me to put it in gear, then duly passed me! But that was back in days of hand signals, remember those? Hill hold is a great idea saves the clutch plates.
  5. Er Woolworths in Manchester. Rather defeats the object and questionable legally - BUT??
  6. Lead is the way to go. Mixing modern with old is not a good solution. A possible compromise is to have some EPDM sheeting as an underfelt to the lead this is a totally waterproof membrane. Would also suggest that you have code 6 lead sheet as a minimum. If you are in a conservation area you may need to notify the local authority etc.
  7. Speedwatch does actually have a positive effect on traffic. In our village we have run this for the past 4 yrs and have seen reduction in the number of vehicles exceeding the limits, albeit it's taken a while. In our parish over 17,000 have been noted as in excess of the speed limits with 4000 being reported to the police. This equates to 4250 / yr or put simply 12 a day with 3 /day reportable. This is based on at most 4 x 1 hour sessions over a 7 day period. One at 57mph in 30mph at 5.00am In some respects it might be termed a bit of a toothless weapon, but what it does /has done is provide hard evidence of speed issues in the parish and provided sufficient argument to get small highway improvements undertaken by the local Authority (crossing point for elderly, small islands with illuminated signs - extra road markings. On the last point it was possible to use the speedwatch data to demonstrate that the first version of hatched areas was not working and thus a revised and now working set of markings have been implemented. Deployment of portable speed indicator devices (SID's) have further helped to highlight issues within the parish -reductions in speed limits 40 to 30mph and also the introduction of movable speed signs - these are intelligent and allow traffic data to be captured and again used to get speed detector vans visiting. Also mention of school children lecturing divers has worked well. As to the letters these are sent by Police and a log kept such that persistant offenders get a home visit by the local bobby to 'discuss' the matter. I am reliably informed that after 2nd letter and a visit is triggered, that there then NO further instances of that vehicle or persons at that address being clocked over the limit. So all in all it might seem toothless operation but it does nibble away at the problem and slowly educates that a limit is there for a reason however obscure it might seem to some (or many) The only time everyone seems to obey the limit is when the local bobby is on site with the speedwatch volunteers!
  8. From the picture posted it looks as if the rusty bit half way down is a triangular access key, and the top bit is removable. It may be a cable jointing point? Gas key should fit to see what is there. As to ownership - you only own the surrounding soil etc, which you are entitled to remove so long as you do not touch the post. If it moves after you have removed soil it is not your problem. Just inform BT that you will remove soil on a certain date and invite them to move &secure their post before that date otherwise you will bear no responsibility for consequences. This approach worked for an Uncle of mine when he started to move soil - they came very quickly and sorted issue. Albeit it was a pole with 11kv 3 phase lines on it!
  9. For all whoi want to get old / stored slot racing kit working again, the following will help you when cleaning track. 1. Do NOT use anything abrasive (wet & dry, sandpaper or a metal scraper) 2. The safest way to clean track is to use a good ink rubber or hard pencil rubber. and than see 3 below. 3. If the tack is just tarnished / grubby / dusty use meths on a lint free cloth (hankerchief is good but be warned !) As some one who used to sell all these systems, Scalexetric, Auroa, TCR etc this was found to be the best way to clean track without removing the very thin nickel plating on the steel track. If your pickup contacts are worn / gone a short length of the outer braid from a piece of TV coax cable makes a good contact and again if the peg to hold it is missing a small piece of matchstick works fine. Another tip, try not to run it on a carpeted floor, we used to get cars back in for not working and it was great sport to use apair of tweezers and tell customer colour of their carpet! For Aurora users who are inspired to (play), use again I do have some brand new unused cars - it's to cold at the moment to go and see what they are. If any one is interested do contact me. As to mention of 'original' Scalextric , has anyone got any of the original metal cars? these were from around the late 50's. These were really heavy and stuck to the then basic track. They will run on the newer stuff (not digital) and are worth a fair bit in almost any condition. Another system was Mimic roadways (late 60's 70's) with grey 'road' track - not a racing set but still slot car. Others were produced by Airfix, Lesney (Matchbox) an some 'Empire Made' (Hongkong) knock offs Ok go clean and enjoy.
  10. It should not make a heap of difference to a small splash lubricated engine of between 3 - 5 hp Theres probably only 1 litre in the sump anyway and it does not run for a long time or at very high revs (2000 - 3600). i have similar engines on a variety of garden equioment and have rarely had an issue and indeed rarely change the oil. Some of these engines are 20+ yrs old and still perform well, Only had one put con rod through case over 30 yrs ago and that was not down to oil issues. Just get us all some dry sunny weather so we can get the green stuff cut.
  11. If I can add another bit. Get to know credit control person Interests, hobbies, football team, holidays destinations, school kids what they do at school uni or job. Find out how rotten his job is, basically get inside his head and empathise with him, get dates when cheques are signed ask who signs them off, find about about that person as well. If you get a'promise of cheque being processed in time for next run, contact a few days after to see if it's been included. If not why not? Speak to person who signs the cheques and put them on the spot. Follow it up with a letter directly to that person recorded delivery if it's a serious amount, confirming what outcome is and when / what they will do. If they are struggling conside stage payments to 'help' them over the hump - iy often helps and can cement long term relationships to your advantage. Do not be fobbed of with line - ok will look at it for you - they are not telling porkies they can look at it but does not mean that the will do anything about it. Also be aware of company that starts to trade with you in a modest way and pays very (too?) promptly on first 2 or 3 invoices then because you have trusted them that they send you a big order and you are lulled into thinking ok they have paid very promptly it will be ok for this big invoice. Be very aware - you may never see your goods services, payment ever again - they will have vanished - gone bust = no chance of getting any redress or done a runner on you. I speak from bitter knowledge on that done to me back in the very early 80's - only one but it still ranckles! Invoice factoring is very very expensive - possibly up around 15 -20% deducted as service charge and if they don't pay factor claws back from you as well! Again I know people who have thought that would solve all their cashflow late payments issues - it did not - guy went under with charges. Usually perceived by customer that you are having Cashflow / credit issues and consequently they do not rush to pay factor and you get screwed by claw backs.
  12. Invoice prompt payment discounts have been the foundation of many large businesses. Lord Leverhulme invented the concept of carrot and stick on payments. Sale payment terms were often expressed as 2.5% discount for payment by 10th month following invoice so that gave customer 40 days, then considered overdue and net Trick is to get invoice there by end of month so that the could pay inside those terms. and in 10 days. Which is better terms 2.5% 30days or nett monthly following month of invoice? ask a credit controller and he may well go for second option if cash flow is poor if he is cash rich then 1st option might suit better. 1st one might suit company that has spare adequate cash flow Another way is to charge your £1000 (+VaT) and then add a credit charge of say £200 deductable if payment received by NN days, that way they have an incentive to pay to save the £200 and if they don't pay that with in say 90 days go to small claims court - thought of a CCJ focuses minds wonderfully especially if you suggest that you will claim costs as well.(you are no longer allowed to do the costs bit but it helps to imply) And you have not given anything away and thus remain competitive. ( again imclude acopy of propossed small claims form and say original will be sent to court after say 7 days unless payment made in full and final settlement ( a bit risky as again not supposed to do this, but again it does focus minds - of course you cannot send it but they perhaps do not know that unless of course they have got the Tshirt on that!) If you are supplying consultancy - keep report back until payment received - at least the recommendations you might make. When sending letters requesting payment always add a c.c. to your solicitor(no need send to solicitor unless of course they do not pay) and couch words to effect that unless payment received in full and final settlement of this amount £NNN the the matter will be passed in other hands together with costs incurred. Also be aware of the retention of title clauses in T&C (often referred to as the'Romalpas' clause after the court case that established the clause) be aware there are two versions 1. is a invoice specific version and the other is an all encompassing one for any works / goods / services delivered. Either version works and basically allows you or your agent to enter customers premises (after a small period of notice) and seize your property, be that software/ reports/ physical goods. It may mean you never get paid but you get back services such that they have to find others to replicate work / goods (usually needs company to be going down or about to.) If you are doing a spread of work on several invoices the second version might be more relevant. If you have a USP and they cannot easily get someone else to pickup your work they are obliged to get it resolved Finally have the horrible satisfaction of getting winding up order posted (I think it's arround debt over £750 - might be a bit higher today) screws everyone and not to be done in haste. Can be applied to sole traders, partnerships and of course Ltd co's Good luck.
