Scout 4x4 system locking up when reversing
Thinking back, the first signs of a serious issue were actually going forwards. At approx 50mph something at the back locked up briefly. I thought it was the brakes and one of the rear callipers was binding. Fixed that but the current issues surfaced. sounds like it’s a case of get it home, Get it jack up and on lots of stands and then start spinning things.

Scout 4x4 system locking up when reversing
To be fair, 1m is optimistic. It’s really an inch or two before it all goes wrong. the Indy garage has the car and are getting me an idea of how much gearbox/transfer box work might cost. Already estimated 6 hours just to remove! Let’s say it is down to the Haldex service. how would I check it? what would be wrong with it? what would the fix be? if it’s 6 hours to remove and 6 hours to refit plus work on the boxes, it’s coming home and I will find some time to see if I can fix it. In the last 18 months it’s had new dmf and clutch, new timing belt, new radiator, new discs and pads plus 2 new callipers. It’s been a really good car but at 12 years old and 180k miles I can’t justify dropping another £1-2k into it. If I can swap out a diff or transfer box for a few hundred (assuming it’s just nut and bolt work) then it may be worth the effort. This car was supposed to be the reliable one so I could spend my spare time constantly fixing the Landrover.

Scout 4x4 system locking up when reversing
The local independence VAG specialists just had a look and said it’s either the transfer box or gearbox. both need to come out and be looked at by a specialist. starting to think a new car is needed.

Scout 4x4 system locking up when reversing
Thanks all. the haldex oil was change a few weeks ago. not sure about the rear diff, assuming that’s a different unit. Why would a haldex oil change be significant?? the problem is there in a straight line going backwards. The rear prop shaft damper was a bit worn when I looked a few weeks ago.

Scout 4x4 system locking up when reversing
Hey folks, Anyone got any experience of 4x4 system problems? I had a few issues that felt like the rear brakes were binding. They were and I have sorted them but it hasn’t fixed the problem and if anything, it got a lot worse. car drives forward ok. Reversing not so much. In reverse everything starts to lock up within less than a metre of moving. It feels like transmission windup, makes some unpleasant grinding noises and there is a burning smell. Any suggestions as to what it could be? 2009 octavia scout with 180,000 on the clock.

Brake locked up at 50mph
Hey folks, had an odd and slightly scary issue last night. I noticed a squealing from the rear 2 days ago so have the the car booked in to have the brakes looked at tomorrow. Last night I was driving at 50mph and I think one of the rear wheel momentarily locked up. I pulled over and all seemed ok but pulling into the driveway when I got home it did it again. It felt like the handbrake was on. I suspect I have a duff calliper but wanted check if anyone had any knowledge of similar issues? For various reasons, I am suspecting some ongoing transmission/4x4 problems so hoping it’s not an indication that we a serious problem with that. Thanks

2009 Scout, I have a noise!
So it’s looking like it’s the transfer box making the noise. I suspect this is about to get expensive!

2009 Scout, I have a noise!
2 mins with a mechanic from the local independent VAG garage and its booked in on Monday for a new front bearing and a new rear bearing. The noises have been a bit intermittent but fortunately they were at full volume when driving out of the garage gateway

2009 Scout, I have a noise!
It sounds like it comes from the front but I know that sounds can be deceptive. The last garage claim they had it up on the ramp and checked everything which is what led them to the worn propshaft damper. I just dug out my code reader and interestingly got intermittent errors for both front and the left rear ABS sensors. I know the ABS ring is part of the hub so could that indicate anything. No ABS warning lights I am taking it to the local VAG independent specialist later to take a mechanic for a drive and see if we can identify it. It sounds like a wheel bearing to me but had 2 garages say no. Tempted to just start replacing bearings and see what happens. Add it to the list with the binding break!

2009 Scout, I have a noise!
Just been for a quick spin and failed yet again to record the noise. How do people manage to get a clear recording of this sort of thing :-) one thing I have noticed is that the rear passenger side brakes are red hot after a couple of miles. Suspect a brake is binding but not sure if that’s in anyway related to the noise I get which seems to come from the front. urgh!

2009 Scout, I have a noise!
Tried recording it on my phone last night but it’s proved difficult to do. the other issue I have it that it’s got all season tyres on it so there is a bit of road noise from them. I will have another go at recording something.

2009 Scout, I have a noise!
Hey folks, I have an annoying noise that I can’t seem to get fixed so looking for suggestions. The car is a 2009 Octavia scout 2.0tdi with 180k miles and an almost full service history. It had had a new clutch and DMF fitted in December and ever since its had some strange noises I can’t get to the bottom of. The clutch work could be completely unrelated but the timing is coincidental. At first it sounded like a wheel bearing was grinding which embarrassingly turned out to be the wheels lined with dried mud grating on the callipers :-) its now now progressed to a whine with an occasional drone that 2 garages have been unable to find/fix. The noise use appears to be a quiet whine that is road speed related coming from the left front (could miss leading as its had to pinpoint) which is joined by a droning noise around 1800rpm when accelerating at slow speed away from a corner. It seems to be more prominent after turning right. The first garage said they couldn't find the source but they did find a broken front spring which was duly replaced. The second garage could find anything but did find the prop shaft damper was coming apart. So so still have a noise and can’t get to the bottom of it. I did think it might be a wheel bearing but have been assured it isn’t as they can’t find anything making a noise or feeling worn. so, any suggestions on what to try? thanks
