  1. Seems to be a stock fault - it happened on my (previous) Octavia. A new temperature sender unit should do the trick.
  2. I remember a discussion about "early" decorations (especially lights) at work a couple of years ago. Someone suggested that they were put up to celebrate either Diwali or Eid-ul-fitr instead of Christmas. Both Diwali and Eid were at the end of October this year.
  3. I won't be able to make this meet - Mrs KLB's dad is coming to dinner, so I'll be busy cooking. 1. Tigger & Bex (2 eating) 2. dvere & Mrs d (seating for 2, eating for 3...) 3. 4. There's currently a crop of pumpkin recipes on Google Groups: uk.food+drink.misc
  5. Perhaps you're getting to Ubuntu from the wrong direction. I started with Slackware over ten years ago (ah, the 1.0x kernel...), then Debian in the late 1990's (around then I ditched Windows altogether), and now I use Ubuntu. As far as I'm concerned, it's really easy to install and configure, and does eveything I want it to do. As for your fan problem (running continuously), I suspect that's nothing to do with CPU load; it's more likely that the ACPI (Advanced Control and Power Interface) kernel module isn't installed. If you're lucky, there may be a .deb package with ACPI in it - if not you can always compile a custom kernel. It should be do-able, just a matter of rolling up your sleeves and RTFM
  6. Well, almost... My application for early retirement has been successful I'll officially retire on November 30th - but as I'm currently on sick leave, I'll only be going into the office for a couple of hours to say goodbye and clear my desk. Mrs KLB has already started planning next year's holidays
  7. Er, I forgot to add... Since the UK pre-harmonisation UK mains standard of 240V was held to very close tolerances, it actually complied with the 230V +/- 10% EU harmonised standard - so the electricity generating companies didn't actually change anything! In practice, UK mains are 240V +/- a couple of percent.
  8. Nice pics, Q I hope you'll find room for a Briskoda sticker on your new car
  9. The harmonisation of mains voltages in EU countries was fudged, and as a result we had two slightly different "standards". Most of Europe (the former 220V countries) standardised on 230V -10% +6% (i.e. 207.0 V-243.8 V) while the UK (formerly 240V) standardised on 230V -6% +10% (i.e. 216.2 V - 253.0 V). In practice, this means that kit designed for EU-wide use has to be rated at 230V -10% +10%. The fudge was officially sanctioned when 230V plus/minus 10% was adopted as the new EU standard in 2003

  11. My desktop PC has been getting a bit noisy over the past couple of months. I opened up the case and had a listen; most of the noise seems to be coming from the fan on top of the CPU heatsink. The inside of the case is fairly clean, but there's a lot of crud on the fan blades and around the top of the heatsink. It's probably not helped by 'er indoors smoking - the crud has a distinct brown, tarry consistency. My guess is that the fan bearings are shot, so there's not a lot of point in trying to clean it up. So, a couple of questions:- Are fans standardised? in other words, can I use a "generic" 6cm fan from the local PC shop as a straight replacement? The case as a whole is under positive pressure; there's an 8CM fan sucking in air at the front. What's the best material to put in front of the fan to filter out particulates (especially smoke) without impeding the air flow too much? Thanks,
  12. Still not sure whether or not I'll be able to make this one - if I can, I'll be at the Gordano Services in plenty of time to join the convoy. I'll skip the pub lunch (trying to diet & cut down on the booze). 1. Tigger & Bex (2 eating) 2. dvere (& Mrs d if up to it) 3. Emily-Elizabeth 4. Shifty & Loz 5. devonutopia 6. Makefish 7. 13. Where's the "it depends on the conditions" box? For instance, when I'm approaching a roundabout I usually change down from fifth to fourth (if necessary) and slow down, but what happens after that depends on circumstances. If there's traffic on the roundabout I will brake to a stop from fourth, select first, and start off again when my path is clear. If there isn't any traffic on the roundabout I'll block change from fourth to second (double declutching helps) and carry on.
  14. Go for it! At the very least you'll be forced to keep up your present standard of driving, and at best you will be able to improve the driving standards of many others. There weren't many local groups when I took the IAM test back in 1972, so I never really got involved in the "group" culture. It's a pity really; I'd like to get involved in training new drivers (either IAM or - preferably - ROaDAR), but recently I haven't the time or opportunity.
