Spins properly, sounds just like it’s going to start normally for half a second and tries 2-3x to do so. Similar to when the car runs out of gas. Could it be a faulty fuel pump?

Hi all, Was driving on the highway during a rainstorm when the engine suddenly shut down when I tried to accelerate. Let it drift to the side of the road, started the engine again, it would start but runs like it's choking or not running on all cylinders. Towed the car home the next day and it won't start at all, but it cranks. No faults in the dashboard, no warning lights. Tried changing the diesel filter, but it's the same. I want to try to do as much as I can myself, any ideas about what I could check next? Car is '15 station, manual, diesel, driven around 190.000km.
