Octavia estate 2008 Ignition barrel and keys needed urgently
Ok, so a bit of a gap there! Finally got around to having a look at the damn thing. I've found this on eBay : https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/304177551268?_trkparms=amclksrc%3DITM%26aid%3D1110018%26algo%3DHOMESPLICE.COMPLISTINGS%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D20200818142838%26meid%3D7322f7df01544698951c196b0ae72837%26pid%3D101197%26rk%3D5%26rkt%3D12%26sd%3D233794609587%26itm%3D304177551268%26pmt%3D1%26noa%3D0%26pg%3D2047675%26algv%3DItemStripV101HighAdFee&_trksid=p2047675.c101197.m1850&amdata=cksum%3A3041775512687322f7df01544698951c196b0ae72837|enc%3AAQAHAAAA8C6VSE2uGkOxRbBlxpADtEt%2F0rV2KYMbfdApChgZ12LOwtIv9WernLwD84xOuJZ1RlZeCT2HW7ouiBfhdOwItlLKC43GWgtoRPZA3kczmJm3VI3NrZX1xMNi1%2FLyOfhH44Gw2H9nGAKt0cQhJkns4BVUsscYOBBWD2H9vTK6wpg6E1WjJcEUK8I0CLZjXSmiekG0MaJmRh01kQ%2BZcXRsrQOi5VIF2tZ%2FScagv%2F3La%2FiNp%2BK4toTsno3y7%2FPdKnxF7AspA07KNW7vUjVTSA%2FUvSzhmnHcTV352Nhfj9DjpFcX98yJsXWLDPs3iwrd7R6lqg%3D%3D|ampid%3APL_CLK|clp%3A2047675 Question is, will I have problems linking this key to the immobiliser software on the car? I need the cheapest and quickest fix, car will immediately be up for sale once it's running again. Cheers.

Update, now have the logbook. I won't make that mistake again. I will fix the Skoda soon now that the break is over. Didn't have time to look at it at all. I will give you an update once it's done, cheers.

Ok, interesting, I wonder why the Chinese address on the bottom of the page 🤔 Anyway, picked up another car now and that's perfect, so I can fix this over the holiday when I have time. I'll let you all know when it's done and working well again, cheers!

Well the Yorkshire one looks promising, but the other was China! 🤣 Thanks for that, I'll order the bits but no longer in a panic, just about to buy another car. If you think that sounds a bit OTT, there's other issues I haven't even started on, mainly a logbook issue which makes me reluctant to spend cash until we have it in our possession. Thanks for the help, keep you posted.

Octavia estate 2008 Ignition barrel and keys needed urgently
As far as hot wiring is concerned it would have been a doddle had I not actually destroyed the switch. I could have reconnected the antenna to the wiring and put the key within the cylinder and that would suffice. But I'm not confident about the steering lock so will remove that anyway. I can order the bits and get the car sorted for after the holiday, but will need to buy a cheap car in the interim anyway.

Hi Nige, yes they all show 'in stock' but all I've looked at so far are based in Germany or Poland/Czech Republic etc. Online car parts states at the bottom of their info page that they have a warehouse in mainland Europe.

Sadly that might be the only option for a quick fix, but then we'd always be wondering how long it would last. Thinking of buying another car, my daughter needs something for work, she's currently using her brother's car, and sometimes a friends'.

Sadly turned out to be not in stock, and I have come to realise that many of the large online parts suppliers, though having a .uk web address, are actually shipping from Europe. Can anyone point me at a genuine UK based supplier who might just have stock in this country? Cheers.

Octavia estate 2008 Ignition barrel and keys needed urgently
Using Autodoc search facility I have found plenty of suppliers for the ignition switch on it's own. Prices vary from under a tenner, to nearly £30. But I have also found a supplier of a FEBI Bilstein ignition switch combined with the whole lock and two new anti-tamper bolts. It's £93.86 plus post. I would have thought buying new would be best option for those parts.

I went to remove the ignition from the end, and after popping off the cover then removing the switch internals, unfortunately they came out in bits. The main body, the white bit, had to be prised out. So that's one piece I definitely have to purchase! I'm thinking it's probably best to replace everything. We only have one chipped key, and the unlock function doesn't work, so we have to unlock the boot to stop the alarm from going off. And the steering lock does feel rather notch. Is there any one single supplier who any of you could recommend as best to get these bits without spending a King's ransom? Thanks again for the continuing help and encouragement.

And here's trying the cylinder and key. Very loose and sloppy but doesn't stick at all. https://youtu.be/asHXShazaGU

Ok, here's testing the steering lock and ignition switch with a screwdriver, note, it is rather notchy.

Octavia estate 2008 Ignition barrel and keys needed urgently
Believe it or not, after trying the shaft from a pop rivet, (strong, smooth and exactly the right thickness), with a lucky shake the cylinder finally came out. Only took nearly a week! Trying it our on the bench after removing it, it was clear that the catch was not moving very far, and whatever I was trying in the hole wasn't hitting the right spot. But never mind, it's out. Right, so now it's a question of what is actually wrong, as you can see from the key and cylinder video, they are not jamming at all. Looks like the cylinder is jamming at the steering lock point I think, unless it's the ignition switch at the far end. I might try and remove that next before taking out the barrel. Stop Press : ignore comment about video as the file size is too large.

Octavia estate 2008 Ignition barrel and keys needed urgently
Thanks, I'm just about to go and attack it again. I'm hoping one last ditch attempt at removing the cylinder will work, if not I'll be undoing those bolts. Cheers.

Erm, yes I know the point of the anti-tamper screws, the guy in the video was lucky that the heads on his weren't broken off! As for sticking with it, I don't really have any choice. Other than a can of petrol and a box of matches.............
-
Octavia estate 2008 Ignition barrel and keys needed urgently
Cheers for that, I did get it off in the end, but somewhat more piecemeal than that! It's a good video, the only one I've seen so far that is exactly the same as mine. Well, other than the anti tamper screws are broken off, but I shall have to have a go at them, as I have now been trying for four days to release the ignition cylinder without luck. Something is jammed inside. Oh well. I'll keep you posted, thanks.

Octavia estate 2008 Ignition barrel and keys needed urgently
Still haven't managed it. Tried several alternatives, I think the lever that is supposed to move has become burred, that or the slot it engages in. I'll try another couple of times but hands are now red raw! I guess I'll need to remove the barrel, but this flat black box is underneath and not sure how to remove that. I have taken out the tiny little Allen screw at the top centre, but it's still held. The ones I saw in the videos were different to this, and I don't want to wreck it. Any advice? Many thanks.

I have, several times, I guess about an inch. Some pins I've tried seemed to go further, but no matter what I have tried, the lock won't come. Losing the will to live now.

Octavia estate 2008 Ignition barrel and keys needed urgently
How far should a pin, Allen key or whatever need to be inserted into the hole to release the ignition cylinder?
-
Octavia estate 2008 Ignition barrel and keys needed urgently
I am trying a thin Allen key. I'll attack it again tomorrow with a few other items. Perhaps I haven't got the angle right. It's obviously jammed up - well, that's a definite isn't it! Cheers.

Ah, well unfortunately I did trying one last time to extract the cylinder. What will happen?

Octavia estate 2008 Ignition barrel and keys needed urgently
Update : this morning we went up the road to where the car had been left. Sadly, no-one had stolen it. As a last resort before trying the potentially hazardous pushing the car down the hill trick, I tried one last time to force the ignition. This time I took a very large hammer and the spare key blade, and after giving it a bloody good larruping it finally gave in and turned! I was so happy to drive the car back the 1/4 mile rather than pushing it. I have now stripped out around the steering column, as all attempts to get the cylinder out of the barrel have met with no success. And yes, I did turn the key to the correct position. I'm guessing I shall have to go the whole hog and remove the barrel in it's entirety. So far I have removed the plastics top and bottom, the airbag, and the steering wheel. Naturally I didn't have the M12 spline socket so had to buy a kit. Though it wasn't expensive and has a few useful other sizes in it. The one thing that has me baffled is the black oblong box under the column that masks the barrel. I can't fathom how to get that off, and the YouTube tutorials all seem to feature different designs to mine. Any ideas? Oh, one more thing. I removed the airbag without disconnecting the battery, (naughty), am I likely to get an error code when I reconnect it? Should I disconnect battery anyway? Many thanks again for the help.
