Hello again my friends. I've been away for a while but I'm back with another question. I need to get a tow bar fitted to my '66 (Mk III) Octy. I'm not really comfortable doing the installation myself and I can imagine the difference between a good fitter and someone "willing to have a go" is considerable so I'm hoping people can say if they've had good jobs done near Exmouth/Exeter. My knowledge of the options is poor, but I believe there's a cheaper "bypass?" type installation that doesn't include linking up with the Octavia computer's towing cleverness. Am I wrong to think this would be okay for a light trailer? Thanks for any advice and links to more info that'll help me make the right choice for my Octy. 👍🏻

As it so happens, I thought I better check the socket before going to such lengths. Turns out my multimeter shows a steady 12V supply in the socket. :clap: I guess the USB adaptor is what's at fault here. Maybe I blew it?? :peek:

Thanks guys. I'll have a look later or tomorrow. What a job to replace a fuse. Seems silly to "hide" them away like that. Whoever thought that was a good idea?? The cynic in me says this is so they can charge little old ladies a pretty penny for what ought to be a user maintenance job.

Hi I'm trying to get at the fuse for the 12V socket on the centre console. I believe, from the manual, that it's behind the driver's side storage compartment. I cannot understand the diagram or instructions in the user manual (Page 233). Here's a photo of my storage compartment that I can't seem to get behind. Any advice? PS. Looking past the sides, it doesn't seem there are any fuses back there. Maybe they're attached to the back of the storage compartment?

I drove little a little old lady. I accelerated gently, drive mostly 60mph and freewheeled down the hills (engine on of course). I don't normally drive like this but I wanted to see what I'd get if I really tried. Next week: sport mode!

Over 180 thousand now. I thought I was doing well only to see others over 200 and 300!!She's going in for a service on Friday. Sounds like new discs and pads in front and bearing rear left. Poor girl has had a rough life.

My '06 Octy now has 162275 miles on the clock as of the trip back from France on Sunday. We left Tignes at 7am local time and got home to Devon at 1am local time. 868.6 miles in 19 hours thanks to the first two hours averaging 15mph due to snow and ice (using chains).

The same people had my car again to service it. They replaced the 4th glow plug and the plug and wire to the brake sensor to switch the brake disc warning light, also replaced a headlamp and washed it as well. I'm pretty chuffed to have my car back in full working order and serviced for less than I dreaded it might cost just to fix that ruddy EML!

151,123 as of yesterday. Octavia classic 1.9 TDi - the most basic you could get (doesn't even have remote locking! ) Still going strong. It's an '06 reg, bought new I'm the only owner and I still love it. Sorry I didn't add to the list or post a photo; I'm on my phone right now.

Don't you just love the picnic spots along the toll roads though? Toilets are horrific, but the picnic spots under trees is like a different world compared to UK rest spots. (Drove back from Chur, Switzerland to Exmouth, Devon with my Octavia in "get home" mode with eml on. What a joy to finally get power back this evening!)

Well, the garage fixed it. The problem was some wires had been in contact with the starter motor and had to be fixed and rerouted away from the starter motor. They also replaced 3/4 glow plugs. The 4th is stuck so they'll try again tomorrow when the stuff they put on it might have helped loosen it enough to replace. (It's going in again for a service because these guys seem to know what they're doing.)

I've given up on trying to sort this myself. Tomorrow morning Camberley Service Centre are getting the car to try fix. I just hope they can fix it for less than the car's worth.

As far as I can tell, the few wires from the MAP sensor are bundled with other wires, then more wires, eventually into a black plastic hose that reminds me of a shower hose, which itself vanishes into the depths below some large units on the front right of the engine area. Are there any guides on how to access these wires and check their connection to the loom? Where is the loom? Me: Clueless but learning by the day.

Hi all Jason kindly ran his diagnostics on my car because the engine light is on, both when I turn the ignition on, and after starting the engine. The MAP Sensor (Manifold Absolute Pressure) was suspected so I bought a new one and replaced it. But no luck, the engine light is still on and the car drives like there's no turbo. In case it helps anyone, here's how I changed the MAP Sensor. In return I'd appreciate suggestions on what else could cause this. Start by opening the bonnet - dah. Two poppers hold the cover in place, front left and on the right as you look at it from the front of the car: Here it is attached to the hose in the middle of the photo: Two Phillips screws secure the sensor to the hose. These are easily removed. Disconnect the cable using a flat screwdriver to open the clip. Connect the new sensor and push it into the hose. Now it's just a case of doing the same steps as above in reverse order. It's a quick and easy job. Sadly it didn't fix my problem. Any suggestions? Shall I post my VCDS diagnostic errors for those of you who understand them?

I'm such a noob I don't even know what VCDS map is or where to find it. I think I know what a scan is - plugging a laptop/computer into the car and running some diagnostic software? So much to learn! :think:

My wife and I both just make up little things from the letters we get. I don't think personalised plates are worth what they cost. I'd like to have one, but not for the silly money the DVLA charge because, for me, it'd just be a little tongue in cheek humour. My wife's: Oliver Understands nn Adjectives And Verbs - catchy no? It's fixed!!! :clap: Here's what I did. I noticed that the rounded part that catches on the bar was lower on mine than Paul's. I used a screwdriver and pushed it up. I then noticed that I could get a screwdriver through the hole from the inside of the car direction. Holding that in place, I used the boot switch to release the lock and heard it winding this time. Pulling did nothing, but when I pushed the little lug/button thing on the left, the lock popped open! Woohooo! All seems fine once again, but now when I have the boot open, the mechanism looks quite different: What I see now, which I failed to see in Paul's photo, is that the "hook" (there's probably a better term for it) was open and all the way inside the right hand side of the mechanism. I've circled the tip of it in the photo above. On reflection you might notice that in my original photo, the tip is not showing because the hook is in the closed position, all the way up in the left part of the mechanism. Here's what I think (assume) happened: Wife tried to close boot with WAY too much in it. Boot hit the bar and tried to lock, but "bounced" back open before it managed to grab the bar. Mechanism now in closed position, with arched spring-loaded thingamabob telling the mechanism the boot is open. The remedy (in my twisted mind again) was as follows: Push arched spring-loaded thingamabob up so that mechanism thinks the boot is closed. Open boot to release the "hook" whilst pressing the left lug-like-thing up/sideways. Pull down with screwdriver to open the hook. Hopefully that'll help someone in future with the same problem. As always, prevention is better than cure, so I'll be very clear on capacity limitations. It might be time to buy one of those horrible roof boxes...

Good thinking. I should have mentioned that I've locked and unlocked the car (all doors) and tried the boot release switch. The locking an unlocking do nothing, and the boot release switch clicks, but there is no motor sound to try release the lock.

Thanks Paul, it's good to know not all is lost (yet). The bit that the bar pushes up looks lower on mine so I'll have a go at pushing it up with a screwdriver shank and see what happens.

Hi all I joined the forum a long time ago but I've not been very active. I've just posted about a problem with my boot and thought I better make sure I introduce myself as well. I'm from Exmouth in Devon (England). I've owned my Octavia from new (back in February 2006) and I love it. It's had a few problems mind you, like the airbag light on the dashboard that cost a small fortune for Skoda to put right because they had to remove the drivers seat, which I thought was a manufacturing fault, not mine since I've never dabbled with the electrics. But as a car to drive, I love the way it hugs corners, accelerates and brakes. Recently I've had a few more false indications on the dash; the bulb and brake disk warning lights have come on and I've checked all bulbs and had the pads checked professionally and there's no actual problems, just incorrect dash warning lights. I imagine that's going to cost a fair bit too when the next MOT is due because I heard warning lights on the dash are an instant fail. Sigh. Hi all I've just returned from holiday, and as is normal, my wife thinks we own a van so the boot was full. Well, over full to be honest. When we tried to close the boot, the latch might have closed without catching the bar on the body. After that the boot would not close even with most of the stuff out again. So I drove the 624.4 miles home with the boot tied closed with a rope from the rear windscreen wiper to the tow bar. Now that I'm home, I've taken a look, but I don't know what the "open" position of the mechanism should look like. Here's a photo of the mechanism as it is now (still not catching when I try close it). I just wanted to add my thanks to the people here for describing this symptom and it's troubleshooting/remedy in such detail. My airbag symbol came on yesterday and has been exactly as described since. I'm going to get the battery tested and take it from there (following the advice on this page).
