  1. Just an update. Took car to garage this morning and have put a new nut on the end of the clutch plate. They have said to see how it is but they suspect that the clutch plate may have worn due to the nut not being on for a long period of time. Going to see how it goes, fingers crossed. Want to say a big thanks to everyone who posted replies, once again the advice has been quick and absolutely spot on. Cheers
  2. Fingers crossed. Do you think that when the car moves then this would effect it as it seems to work ok sat on the drive, then again, i've not left it on too long as i'm worried the plate will come off, not tempting fate I will post tomorrow and let you know the outcome.
  3. Hi Sdenny. I've just been out and had a look tonight and found that the clutch plate is still there , it's exactly the same as in your picture except mine hasn't got the nut on the end. I'm taking it in tomorrow, is it just a case of asking them to put a new nut on?
  4. Thanks for the replies guys, really helpful. I'll have a look on the plastic under tray tonight, not very optimistic though as the air cons been the same since I bought it 18 months ago, if its still there i'll be shocked. I can't really afford to get it fixed at the min but i'll keep my eye out for a second hand compressor or clutch. I'm taking it to my local garage tomorrow just to see if it is knackered for definite. One positive thing I guess, the weathers nowhere near as hot as it was and think of the fuel savings
  5. Thanks sdenny, that image is a big help. Ive got a horrible feeling i'm missing the black plate that sits on top (im guessing this is the important bit). I've highlighted it in blue. Is this the actual clutch plate? Cheers
  6. I'm sorry, i'm not sure which bit is the clutch, I'm not very technical minded. I've found this picture and this is what I can see on the end of the compressor but i'm not sure if the triangular bit on top is still there, I think so. I've not got the car with me today. Heres the link to the piccy: Genuine VW / Audi A/C CLUTCH (1J0-820-811-A / 1J0820811A) Thanks
  7. Hi everyone. Following an earlier post regarding problems with my air con, thanks to this site I have had a look at the air con compressor tonight and found that there is no locknut on the thread that comes out of the compressor...I'm guessing this is not at all normal. Will my compressor be knackered as i'm not sure how long it's been without the nut, i'm kind of hoping I may be able to save it still if it's not gone. It seems to spin ok when i put the aircon on and cold air was coming out for the few minutes I had it on. Is it a special type of locknut? I'll keep the air con off until I know any more. Thanks in advance.
  8. Thanks for the reply. Is there any way of preventing it coming off before it breaks and is it easy to see if this is happening?
  9. Hi. How did you know the unit had broken? Ive just posted a topic as i'm having problems with my air con and wondering if it could be the same thing.
  10. Hi everyone, I was wondering if anyone could help with a strange air con problem on my octy vrs. Since buying it, approx 18 months ago, the air con has always not seemed to be that cold, on auto or Lo mode. With the weather being so nice over the last few days I took it to my local garage and asked them to have a look. They checked it for leaks (non shown up) and did a full re-gas. When i picked it up last night it was great, like a fridge...for about 5 mins and then it started to blow normal, cool air again. I left it on LO all the way home (45 mins drive). It went cold again briefly when i pulled up to some lights but then quickly went back to how it has always been. I've searched the forum and found that problems with the compressor can be common. My questions are: 1) If the compressor is knackered, would it still be possible for cold air to be produced? 2) Is the compressor easy to locate and can you see any damage..what do I look for? 3) If it's not the compressor, any ideas on what it could be, it seems strange that it worked briefly twice last night. I have spoken to the garage this morning and i'm going to take the car back on friday, my wife has it today and I've asked her to check to see if it happens again today. I would appreciate any help. Cheers
  11. Thanks for all the comments everyone. Went for the Fuchs in the end from Opie Oils. £58.00 inc delivery for 5 litres and it's arriving today. Very Happy.
  12. Hi Everyone. Looking at getting either Fuchs Titan GT1 Longlife III 5W-30 or Castrol Edge 5W-30 for my VRS on fixed service schedule. Not used either before as this is the first time the car has been serviced in my ownership. I know many members here use the Castrol, it's just the Fuchs is about £5.00 cheaper on Opie Oils and wondered if anyone had used it and was happy with it. Thanks
  13. Thanks for all the info guys, really helpful. Yes DGW, I have a Mk1 Octavia vRS. Just to confirm, I'm ok to use a VW 503 spec oil even if im going to a fixed interval service. Ive been onto Opie Oils - Oil Recommendations Specialists | Find the right Engine Oil & Performance Products and there is Castrol EDGE 0W-30, but that says it's VW 502 00/503 01/505 00 which isn't VW 503, does this mean its no good? Sorry, i've been looking now for 2 hours, think i'm over complicating things.
  14. Thanks for the quick response yellotaxi. I wouldn't even consider getting any oil from asda/tesco etc. Where do you get your Lucasoil 10w30 from, anywhere online?
  15. Hi. Had my Oct VRS for just over a year now and have loved every minute of driving it...just had to get that out of the way as i've been a member since then and not posted. Im going to have it serviced next month for the first time (in my ownership). It is currently on variable schedule but im changing it to a fixed as it only does about 7000 miles a year. I want to supply the oil but after about an hour of searching through various posts im still not 100% sure which oil is best. I read that for fixed servicing I need an oil that meets VW 500 standards and www.opieoils.co.uk says that Fuchs Titan XTR 10w-40 is ok for fixed but would I be better with fully synthetic because of the short journeys/low miles per year. I've also found members using synta gold fully synthetic but i can't find anywhere on the net that sells it. Any help would be greatly appreciated as i know this topic has been covered a lot. Thanks
