Update on the above. I got nowhere with my own attempts at diagnoses, heard nothing from you guys so reverted to my local garage (gawd bless 'em). They diagnosed steering pump failure and had the whole job done and dusted in 24 hrs for £575.

Hi all you knowledgeable Briskodas, I have a power steering problem with my 2011 Greenline TDI. About 7 days ago I started the car without waiting for the dashboard warning lights to finish it's sequence. Immediately on start up the PS warning light came on and the steering went very stiff. I immediately switched off, then waited 30 sec's or so and tried again, this time waiting for the dash lights to fully sequence. This time the PS warning light went off, I started the engine and the steering returned to normal. However, the PS warning light came on again yesterday, stayed on, and the steering went stiff again. The OBD2 scanner I have shows no fault codes, fuse number 16 (5 amp) is good, the PS fluid level is good, I can see no outside evidence of a problem with fuse number 6 (30 amp, top of battery) but can work out no way of investigating this further. What's my next step please?
