  1. Sorry, it might have been 'TP' I held down, definetely T. I was inspired to try it by the 'TF' suggestion earlier in the thread Yes it was asking for the code, but as I'd tried a couple of times the wait had increased to a few minutes wait and then something like '3 - - - -'. According to the manual a few more tries and it would be 24h or more before you can try again!
  2. Yesss, its working now The solution in my case: held down the TF button for several seconds and the radio came on, SAFE mode no more! This action must have caused the ECU to resend the code I guess. Thanks for all the suggestions.
  3. Yes I agree this is a bit off, especially as you bought it new. Mine was bought as a <2 year old approved used from a main Skoda dealer and no radio code supplied, unless its one of those numbers in the key codes, but I don't think it is. What price are they asking, btw, for the code or decoded radio?
  4. Ok, sounds like I've no option but to visit a dealer then, thanks for clarifying that mannyo. Bit of a pain as whoever buys the car would probably want to change the head unit anyway...
  5. Ok, thanks, think I've tried that sequence, pikpilot, but will give it another go. However I've probably not left the radio on in 'SAFE' mode while driving for long, trundlenut, so will try that. The car's year is 2002. Official response from Skoda is that it needs to go to a dealer who connect it to the diagnostics equipment, and get the code from some database, which is why I wonder if the same result could be achieved with VAGCOM?
  6. I've just put the original radio back in my car, its gone into SAFE mode, and I can't find any radio card in my ownership docs. There's a couple of codes in the white plastic key code thing but these didn't seem to work. I believe the code is held in the ECU, rather than the radio itself, so is it possible to reset the radio using VAGCOM? I only have the shareware version. The Radio Controller responds with values for the following: 'VAG Number', 'Soft Coding', 'Component' and 'Shop #'. Cheers for any advice, hoping not to have to visit the dealer for this as they're not nearby.
  7. Hi, I've had the whiteline bar on for 2 or 3 years now and it hasn't hit anything as far as I know. I was concerned at first so stopped on a couple of those part-road-width speed humps, jumped out and looked under to check the clearance. Surprising how little difference it actually makes to the overall clearance of the car. Anyway, taking mine off soon as car's going for trade in, so if anyone in the Edinburgh area fancies a used ARB cheap. It might need new U-clamps though, as the threads on those look a bit rusty (these clamps attach the arb bushes to the rear beam).
  8. Re the clearance: I fitted one of these to my Elegance Estate some time ago and was concerned at first about the height of the drop links. In practice they have never been a problem - I even stopped on a few of those car width hump type speed bumps to check the clearance and they were nowhere near touching.
  9. My 1.8T was overfilled by about the same and I did a hundred miles or so before noticing. The garage removed the excess and it does run exactly as before, except for a brief moment about a minute after each startup when its not as smooth as it used to. Having searched this site I now suspect oil has got into the Secondary Air Pump and stopped it working properly.
  10. Is VAGCOM sufficient? I have the same transmission and nearly 50k miles on the clock so a check/service may be in order. Edit: actually the tranny may be different from nader's, I have an '02 1.8T Auto.
  11. cheezemonkhai, a couple of weeks but only 170miles. Mostly easy driving with one brisk drive. Lummox, about 1-1.5cm over the Max marker. The hesitancy has not returned so I'm hoping all is ok. The Mot is due soon so the emmisions will be checked and the health of the cat should be clarified.
  12. Well, its back with the excess removed. No checks other than a test drive were reported, is this sufficient?
  13. Its back in the garage. Apart from removing the excess I'm not sure what he should be checking? It ran fine this morning but I worry about the possibility of internal minor damage which may shows up over time and be hard to pin on this incident. The hesitancy problem showed up worse when the car had been sitting the longer, i.e. 2-5 days since last driven.
  14. My Octy 1.8T Auto has run perfectly for the 3 years I've owned it until this week, when its threatened to stall for a minute or 2 when cold. It seems fine when warmed up a little. It was serviced a couple of weeks ago so tonight, wondering if the garage got something wrong, I checked the engine oil level and found it to be at least 1/2" overfull! Its not sitting 100% level so I'll move it and recheck in the morning, but I'm now wondering if that's the cause of the running problem? The handbook suggests overfilled oil may cause some to enter the cylinders and contaminate the cat, but I worry damage may have been done to the seals. Any advice - should I let the garage who overfilled it remove the excess oil and see how it goes, or should I demand there be more extensive checking? Cheers, Stu.
  15. I've had a 1.8T Auto ('02 Elegance Estate) for nearly 3 years and its been fine. The 'box seems smooth and well matched to the engine (but I'm sure a DSG is far superior). MPG is probably poorer than the equivalent manual, I av. 30-35 depending on the jouney and a bit either side is possible. Parts I've replaced are disks & pads, lambda probe, coolant temp sensor, added a rear ARB. Its now at 47k miles.
