Hi All, Thanks for the replies. All I can find on the topic is that specialist equipment is needed to ensure the crank and balance shafts are installed with the right timing and amount of backlash in the gears. It looks like I have two options, either take the balance shafts out and rebuild without them or get a 2nd hand unit.

Octavia VRS CUPA engine has had the crankshaft removed due to damage, I have sourced a used replacement and am trying to understand how to reassemble it as there are two gear driven balance shafts. The manual says if balance shafts are fitted then the crankshaft cannot be removed, also I have been told that it is not possible to reassemble as only the factory have the equipment to do this. Has anyone got any experience of this issue? Can I just remove the balance shafts as these appear to be optional for this engine?
