I have never understood why simple everyday engines cannot be cooled be a light oil (like diesel, or sunflower oil). This would eliminate corrosion problems in the cooling system, and stop it freezing in the winter (the pump would be better protected against wear, and probably run a bit quiter too). Does anyone know if this has been done? Im also pretty sure a light oil would have excellent thermal capicity (possibly better than water), and therefore be able to dissapate heat better. also if the head gasket blew, light oil getting into the cylinders would have much less potential to damage an engline than water. thoughts anyone?

steve200 replied to Ryan3's topic in Skoda Favorit, Skoda Felicia, Skoda Fun and Skoda Forman
The cheapest. -
in answer to the original question I would love to have a spare engine as Im sure mine will wear out (due to frequent 4500rpm motorway use). but ive nowhere to put it! Just moved to brighton and the house doesnt really have any free space. I think a 1.6 gearbox would be of more use. sorry i cant be of more help

felicia bonnet won't shut
steve200 replied to helpmefixit's topic in Skoda Favorit, Skoda Felicia, Skoda Fun and Skoda Forman
Just had a thought it could also be that its in a "locked position" but its not locked. have a look at the lock on the bonnet and work out what the metal lever presses on when you pull the cable. Should be a release tab/catch/button type thingy on the bonnet side of the lock. You could try finding that and releasing it with a screwdriver or something pokey. -
felicia bonnet won't shut
steve200 replied to helpmefixit's topic in Skoda Favorit, Skoda Felicia, Skoda Fun and Skoda Forman
Ok this has recently happened to me and I forced it shut with my butt and it frogged it all up. So dont force it. The problem for me was with the piece of metal the cable attaches to. its just underneath, and to the right, of the metal bar the bonnet locks onto. Basically its bent downwards and needs to be bent back up again! let me know if this helps. I had to bend mine from underneath. If its not this then your cable could have stretched. try pliers on the little metal ball at the handel end of the cable. (passenger footwell). -

Noise in fifth gear

Its bloody fantastic. I felt like a cross between a paraletic stone masion and fred flintstone whilst lying under the car whacking the gearbox with a chisel !! What a truly great car the felicia is -

Anyone that can help me please do. I desparetly need the car fixed as I have an important commitment tomorrow that I desparetly need the car for! Should I just bolt it back together knowing there is a loose shard of metal in the box ? What are the chances it will hit the teeth ? ... Ive checked through the oil that came out and there is nothing. just some sand grain sized metalic specs. -

Noise in fifth gear
steve200 replied to Vincent Vega's topic in Skoda Favorit, Skoda Felicia, Skoda Fun and Skoda Forman
HELP! situation not good. Turns out my 5 gear retaining nut collar has shattered! ... nice. luckily I found one shard of metal stuck to the gearbox casing, but there is still a sizeable shard (half a toenail cutting of a large mans toe) still inside the box somewhere! .... Could this potentially ruin my gearbox if it hit a set of teeth whilst travelling ??? Also everytime I try and tighten the nut it turns the engine !!! how do I give it 60nm or 100nm or tightening when the engine just spinns ? screwdriver in the alternator ? What should I do ? -

Had the cunning plan to reuse the gearbox oil, so no need to buy more. Also its smells acrid. a stuck in your throat kinda smell. :rotz: -

felicia gear ratio's
steve200 replied to TeflonTom's topic in Skoda Favorit, Skoda Felicia, Skoda Fun and Skoda Forman
Which gearbox is best for motorway use? ie which will result in lowest engine rpm at 75mph assuming wheels are standard (165 70 13) ? Also did any ratios change with the facelift in 1998/1999? -

Anyone removed the cat?
steve200 replied to Phil-E's topic in Skoda Favorit, Skoda Felicia, Skoda Fun and Skoda Forman
I think the favorit front pipe before a certian year is a straight through pipe. This should fit the felicia. If the engine is clean and tight it can pass emissions tests without a cat! SKODA Favorit Hatchback 1.3 89-92 Exhaust Front Pipe on eBay (end time 17-Aug-09 14:53:58 BST) Not sure how it would effect power maby a few more bhp. Would be interesting to find out tho! Let us know how it goes if you do it. -
Thanks for the advice. Im a little hard up at the moment and was stupidly thinking of ways to penny pinch! Last oil change I skipped changing the filter!! :gapteeth: seems ok but wouldnt do it again. ooo one more question, do you need a torque wrench to do this? Im never sure how tight to do things up so i always just do things up tightly, but this could damage gaskets right?
