  1. After calming down I checked it over and cannot find any lodged yellow plastic from the oil dipstick housing. so hopefully no damage done. What amazes me is this garage has 4.5 Review rating has been there 20 years, utterly shocked. Many people may be thinking why don't I do it may myself, but unfortunately without giving a life story + plus not owning the tools or knowledge I dont want to destroy something or go over my head. Meaning an oil change and filter is probably the limitation of what I can do presently. Garages seem to be in a hurry and must have been so ham fisted to cause damage. They also like to use the excuse that its a 24 year old car and I can just expect these things to "Happen"
  2. Hey Guys. My Mk1 went into the garage today to hand a gasket cover seal replaced as there was a leak in the top end. Was not expecting any drama, eventually got the call this afternoon to say its done. However previously there had been an issue with a slight misfire on idle, I do not know if this is related, however they said to me that opun them starting it today it was running very rough and sounded like there was a stuck value, I sometimes experience a very slight misfire when its idle and warmed up, which they previously knew about and they were going to change the o2 sensor, but after it "went rough" today they somehow decided not too. He then explained to me that the rough running went away, and for me to "keep an eye on it". I have not experienced such as issue apart from slight variance in rpms bounces slightly around 750-770 rpm... So I do not know what to look out for if I have a stuck valve. It drove absolutely fine there and driving it back, apart from the idle which does not happen all the time.. To top off my day i got home and routinely check everything under the bonnet to find this. This was hanging off the dipstick where it goes into the sump. It was 17.05, I did manage to phone them and they have agreed to replaced this. When I asked him about it, he admitted he had seen this, but it certainly was not in this state when I last pulled it out.. So not only did he not warn me, I am shocked that the bits may have gone down into the sump.. So all in all I am really annoyed However the garage have offered to replace it but cannot do it till Wednesday. I can only assume the bits off the end of this may already be in the sump or in the Pan, so I will not be driving it apart from it going back to the garage, Could this cause damage?? What sort of symptoms would I have if I had a stuck valve, apart from the idle being slightly out it starts on the button, never cuts out, does not use oil, and there is no smoke. I have no idea what would happen if there was a stuck valve it sounds really bad. ideally need someone to set my mind at ease. S
  3. Hey guys The issue with the idle has gotten alittle better after a few days of driving so not as worried about that now. Today I have dealt with the tires they were starting to crack and the backs were low. So now 4 new tires fitted. Had a good look on the underside its mainly tidy with surface rust, Shocks and struts are original so may be something i look at later. Car needs 1) Waterpump and cambelt change 2) Clutch replacment 3) Oil filter and service perhaps new plugs - will be checking 4) There is some oil remints in the underside tray at the back left. Not enough to drip on the drive, This needs investigation hoping it will be just a seal/gasket or just someone being clumsy from a previous change. 5) Passenger tie rod end may need doing. After I had the tires replaced, they were unable to do the tracking. This will be investigated. 6) Front drivers door latch needs replacing - fairly straight forward but not something i can do myself. I have purchased the part and asked garage to sort this. Car is now at the garage for the clutch / waterpump / cambelt / due to my back they are also doing the service unfortunatly state of my back means I cant do these jobs anymore. They will investigate if it needs the tie rod end etc. At a guess its going to be 1.5 Days of labour. Belts waterpump and clutch + Oil change service coming in at £700 plus the latch and tie rod end, not expecting much changed from £950-£1000 to be honest. but then this gives me the peace of mind she will be mechanically perfect. It is then just the underseal left to complete. mid / Long term (summer job) Waxoil - remove surface rust and treat the underside of the car.
  4. there was about 7 liters left in when I got the car, Thats gone now. its gone through about £20 of non supermarket fuel. I used standard E10, dont know if it would be benefical to use a fuel treatment. Its booked in for belts/clutch and service next week so fingers crossed it will help. Also asked the garage to look at the throttle body and replace air filter as a starting point. To be frank unless this problem risks causing damage, I am willing to probably live with it as well it does not trip codes or lights.
  5. What you have said makes sence looked futher in the mileage in the MOT history and the car has only done 500 miles in 2 years. Crazy. driven her 100 mile today as need to get fetch a parcel. hunting went away when I was at lights but came back on and off. hasn't got any worse. However if I so as much breath of the gas pedal the revs are perfectly stable. So i think its something to do with the ideal. All fluids, oil levels all at the same level afterwards, engine still bone dry. So starting to build up some trust in her now.
  6. Hello Guys So I got my car home, see my other thread.. - Loving it , after owning a Kia picanto that is falling to bits with no space and ride comfort this is in a different ball game. Its now that time where I am learning about the car, and DO NOT yet trust it as she is new to me. Last owner has not done much mileage in the last few years and i think from the MOT history its only done 10K in two years, so she is booked in for Belts and as its on the original clutch I am also having this done.. The last owner wasnt in a hurry to sell so it had been sat for two months not used much. (I think this is relevant) so it either needs a good drive or will benefit from its service next week. Until this evening Ive asked for a oil service, but I think now its gonna need the air filter, sparks , and possibly the throttle body cleaned, when I parked up tonight the revs did not sit stead and bounces ever so slighty- like from 720-750 annoying but does not stall. But still it would be nice to solve this, rather than just "Live with the problem", I am I correct in thinking its probably something easily resolved such as a MAF sensor, carbon on the TB, or 02 sensor... Secondly how long will it take a good garage to find the cause as the problem has not caused a light on the dash. Oh and its a AEH engine, 1,6 Petrol.
  7. Thanks will she is home. - Everything went well collecting it tonight. Super confortable. Got used to the clutch after a while but still gonna have it done along with the Cambelt next week. Only issue I have found and I am thinking as its been stood for a while was the REVs did not hold stable at idle when it had warmed up. - they were bouncing between 710-750 ish where it did not know where to land on. I am being super critical the drive was lovely other than this.. My polo had a simailair issue iyears ago and I removed the throttle body and cleaned it out. But were doing a long journey tommorow so will see how it goes.. Maybe a new air filter will also help.
  8. My New car 1.6 SR - 96K Petrol. 2000 V (Plate) After many hours of going through adverts I have found this gem. Went to view this ealier, the car is immaculate. All the switches work, No rusted sills, surface rust as to be expected, but this is deserving of some love and will be waxoiled and preserved. It is a basic spec, however has everything I need such as the remote locking , Aircon (which works) , all the heater settings work! The only issue is a small scuff around the petrol cap. When presented with the FSH the owner still had the original newpaper advert from which he bought the car. Cometically inside it is almost perfect, no wet or damp areas. I am absolutely stunned by the condition of this car. The only things I will to address are: - Fresh cambelt change, (I always do this as there was only one in the paperwork), I will also be doing the clutch as it was very high however it is not groaning or slipping yet. However is probably on the end of its life! and of course I will get this properly undersealed. There was a tiny amount of mayo around the oil cap, however no signs of the engine head gasket issues. No smoke, no oil smell in the coolant. I have however googled this and becuase its been sat doing nothing doing short journeys, I have found out this is no concern, it was litterally a tiny amount I was able to wipe away, apprantly the 1.6 SR design is prone to condensation in that way. It has a fresh MOT , with no structure based warnings in any of its years, If I remember rightly there were brake pad wearing thin, that can easily be addressed.
  9. Okay update... I like the 1.9 as it's a nice engine and plenty of torque. I've had one before and as diesals go they are built well. I'm probably be gonna to be doing more than 10k so I do want to stick with deisal. I found one on social media 2002 elegance high mileage with 174k on the clock. Guy changed his mind and made up an excuse when I was 10 minutes away. Today I looked at a 2008 classic. It was basic but in very good shape bodywork wise, full history, no smoking, started on the turn , was about to agree a sale when I'd finished the test drive pushed in the clutch then heard a sound, was a grinding sound let the pedal out it went... this only ment one thing which was the clutch and flywheel is knackered, and I was literally seconds away from buying it. Popped the bonnet pumped the clutch and I could smell faint burning smell... literally gutted, the car was 1295 but then not worth it... when adding the work on top. So all in all the search continues... main things I'm looking for when buying is the normal things, checking for smoke rating, engine mounts , flat spots and excessive lag or smoke on harsh acceleration, etc I know how these pd engines respond its just the flywheel almost caught me out. So now I need fsh , timing belt change within 60 isk k, and one with a fresh-ish clutch. Mileage I'm not bothered about as long as its well cared for, would prefer one step up from basic classic trim so I get central locking, was shocked the classic model has no remote locking In the next month my budget will probably be around 2500 top end. So think I'm being realistic, Other car I would possible consider would be a 1.4 tdi fabia I do not know this engine though, are they any good. Would have to be an estate.
  10. Thanks for the advise so far guys. I am swaying more towards a 1.9 PD as I know its a more tried an tested engine, Assuming that I do go for this, What sort of mileage do they normally get issues ? for example if I were to buy a higher mileage car should I automatically assume Ill have to swap / clean injectors at some point? I would like it to be less or a lottery when I buy a car as to wither I have to replace and sort out issues? (Hope that makes sence as I am pretty tired).
  11. Not new to Skoda's Years ago I owned a 2006 Octavia 1.9 PD, loved it, engine was sweet, mileage used to average 55Mpg, but since then I ve owned a few other cars diesels and had issues with have made me alitltle more careful about buying a diesel, as the 2005 Skoda I had in the past had been very well looked after. Unfortunately about a year after owning the car a year lady decided to cruise into me turning right and did not wait and totalled the car. Ive never had the pleasure of owning a Skoda since. Will not be buying something mega new probably looking at a Mk2, and currently I know the choice is between the 1.6 TDi and 1.9 PD engine, whilst I know the PD engine is one of the best, I am I would be confedient in buying over with around 100K on the clock as long as it has good service history, is it also worth considering the 1.6, I am very tempted by the fact that the tax is £35 a yeat, but then I will probably have a DPF to contend with, but I do not know what they are like to live with long term and with higher mileages. I have my eyes open to the fact that a timing belt will need to have been done, and at the 100K area things like injectors or the seals may need replacing, I had an injector nightmare on a 1.6hdi in the past everyone tells me that they can get stuck and can be a nightmare to service (That was in the Hdi engine). The other option is maybe I look at the 1.6 petrol and I think I will be doing mega miles, however do prefer the drive of a diesel. I think its a toss between the 1.6 and the 1.9pd. Also any advise on what to look out for when buying an one is appreciated. I think I was very lucky when I found my old 2005 as it had been really well looked after and never needed a thing. The car seemed to have no rust and was really strong and solid and really want to find something simailir.
