Hello everyone, I'm turning 18 in a few weeks and I'm looking to buy a mk1 octavia as my first (project) car. I've always liked older Mitsubishi Lancer evolutions and Subaru imprezas as well as Škodas since almost every familily member has owned one at some point. So in the search of my very first own car I narrowed my list down to a few cheap options but the mk1 octavia vrs and the 4x4 1.8t are my main options. If anyone has any experience with this cars I would love to hear them in the replies since i can't decide between the two. I want a trackable car because i would love to attend hillclimb races here in Slovenia and I am willing to spend anywhere from 5-10k in parts and mods to make the car handle well. I always hear that octavia vrs's aren't the best handling cars so I'm thinking that the 4x4 with some mods and a lot of weight reduction could handle better because of oversteer and it would probally put the power down easier. But the vrs models are also ~300kg lighter so I'm not sure. For anyone wondering I am awere that the 4x4 is a first gen haldex and that it isn't a pernament awd but in case that I buy a 4x4 model I will also buy a haldex controller or a power valve to send more power to the rear and I'm not too worried about breaking the haldex since I can find one in a junkyard for cheap. Sorry for my not so good english and if anyone can help me out I would be very greateful. G.P.
