I tried the NTFS formatting and it was a total failure so reverted to FAT32 that worked a treat. Do not try downloading directly to the SD card (if that's possible), but download to computer hard drive and then unzip it to the card. My apologies if I'm going over old ground here. Mac

If you delete the previous version on the SD card by formatting the card, remember to do it in FAT32 and not the later version. For some reason it will only work in FAT32, but that may have changed for this later edition. Easiest way around it is just to delete the old data and forget about formatting. Mac

I did a map update by following the instructions to the letter on the Skoda website. I saved the old data and formatted the SD card in NTFS as instructed and downloaded all the files. Using the 7-zip file manager I extracted the files to the SD card and duly inserted it into the Amundsen unit. Would it work? Would it hell! Reloading the old data didn't work either. The unit refused to recognise the file data and just sat there sulking. After many weeks of teeth gnashing, reloading the data, downloading it all over again, etc. etc., kicking the tyres a few times and finally giving up, I booked an appointment with the dealer for 1st May to sort out and left it at that. In frustration I thought I would give it another go, but this time I changed the SD card formatting to Fat32 instead of NTFS and bingo, it worked first time with the latest map data and all the usual features. Hope this helps someone with a similar problem. Mac

In eco mode the engine automatically cuts out when stopped at traffic lights, etc. to save on fuel. This is provided the gear lever stays in drive and foot stays on brake pedal, then engine re-starts when pedal is released. This can be temporarily disabled by pressing the appropriate button (with the letter A inside a circle) just in front of gear lever or, I think, permanently disabled through the setup system. Mac

Had it since November 2013 - Mac1961, 1.4 Elegance, DSG, Hatch in Candy White.

I changed from a 2.0lt DSG diesel to a 1.4lt DSG Elegance Hatch in November and run it in Eco mode, but still plenty of punch and speed. Over a 40 mile trip at speeds of 55 - 60mph I regularly get between 50 and 55 mpg, so no need for a diesel with all the problems that can arise. The 1.4 is very smooth and whisper quiet and overall I'm very pleased with it. Mac

This may already have been mentioned, but I read in the press yesterday that any diesel motor that was fitted with a DPF as standard when new will be checked when it has a MOT. If the DPF is missing or the innards have been removed the MOT will automatically fail. This regulation comes into force in February 2014. Happy New Year Mac

I was originally given week 41 as the build week, but when I phoned garage on Monday was told that it was built last week - week 40. Amazing, but it should be here in a couple of weeks. Ordered 15th August by the way. Mac

Just a thought, has the new 'Lane Assistant' gadget got anything to do with this. On reading the spec it says that the car will be kept in the centre of the lane even through corners. Could be the odd sensation they've mentioned.

Ordered a new Octavia on 15 August, 1.4lt DSG with a few extras. I was given a delivery of between 12 and 16 weeks so I'll be interested to see what the build week will be. Mac

On mine the mirrors fold when holding down the 'lock' key button and unfold when the drivers door is opened as mentioned above. Another feature of the folding mirrors is that they can be electrically folded for example when driving down a narrow road, meeting an oncoming vehicle and folding in the mirrors to avoid clipping his mirror. I think this only works when driving very slowly. To operate this turn the mirror operating button to the small icon that is one click clockwise from the 'L' marker. Mac

Mac Converting Headlights For Europeon Use - Many thanks to Carl for the Guide I have seen recently that people are buying headlight converters for driving on mainland Europe. This is not necessary as all Octavia II headlights, whether Xenon or not, are able to be what is termed as flat beamed. Legislation due to come into effect in March 2008 states that if people are going to be resident for longer than 3 months on the EU mainland they MUST purchase lights with a beam pattern reflecting up to the right however holidays and shorter trips will still be allowed to use flat beam. Step 1 - Working under the bonnet, remove the white retaining nut at the back of the headlight unit by unscrewing completely off. Exactly the same on both sides. Step 2 - Pull on black hook in direction of opposite headlight. It may be stiff so pull firmly but evenly again do the same on both sides of car. Step 3 - The headlight unit will now move forwards slightly. Pull headlight unit forwards and carefully tilt over and remove electric connector. Step 4 - Remove Plastic backing to gain access to headlight unit by pulling metal clips outwards. Then remove headlight bulb connector by pulling upwards and headlight bulb by pushing metal connector to side then lifting up and removing bulb. Do not touch the bulb glass. Step 5 - Now as indicated in the picture there is a small metal bar that slides up to convert the light beam pattern. Step 6 - The bar in the picture above is already at continental setting, for UK setting it looks like the one below. Note the groove in the metal indicated by arrow, this is what the bar covers to convert beam. The blue arrow indicates the metal bar when on UK setting. Step 7 - To move the metal bar I will describe the drivers side first as this is the hardest to do and you require a small screwdiver that is quite long. Step 8 - There is a small black plastic lever on a spring indicated by the arrow in the picture. Push down with the screwdriver on this lever and then turn the screwdriver clockwise, there is only a small amount of movement required so watch the bar as you turn. Once the bar is level as shown in picture above then replace the bulb and connector etc and refit the headlamp. You now need to do the same on the passenger side Picture showing the black lever on passenger side. On drivers side it is behind the electric connector block that is inside headlight unit. Another picture of metal bar in correct position. Ensure the bar is level with rest of metal reflector or the light pattern will be distorted. Step 10 - Once this has been done it's simply a case of re-fitting the headlight unit. In my experience the tracking issue is more pronounced on Octavias with sports suspension such as the VRS. Also, I've had problems with Bridgestone tyres that tend to be offloaded by the manufacturers onto new cars. I had a Mazda 6 with the problem and it was the tyres not the bearings and the same on two previous Octavias and also on my present octy and I can't wait to get rid of the Bridgestones that are still on the back. The roller blind is an integral part of the parcel shelf, so it can't be used separately. Mac

Fog lights are restricted in their use because of their height above road level unless the bulb does not exceed 21 watts, so it follows that DRL's at fog light height must have bulbs that do not exceed 21 watts. Mac

Amazingly I still have a 2007 sales brochure that lists the specs for the whole Octavia range for that year. I can supply details if required. Mac
