  1. Yes, two clutches working on the flywheel, (I take it that there is only one flywheel bolted to the crank?) But my question still stands, if a manual dual-mass flywheel can be converted to single-mass can a DSG?
  2. I have read on here that a single-mass (normal) flywheel can be fitted to an manual car in place of the troublesome dual-mass jobbie. My 1.9 TDi has a DSG 'box and has had a replacement dual-mass flywheel at 60,000 miles (at the time I was told that it had been fitted with a revised, up-rated part) and now, at only 93,000 miles is showing signs of needing another one. Can a single-mass flywheel be fitted with the DSG 'box to forever banish this curse on what has been (up to now) a great car?
  3. Don't know if the VRS DSG 'box is different but I had to have a dual mass flywheel replaced at 60,000 miles on my DSG 'box (1.9 TDi) and it needs another now at 93,000!!
  4. It's not as simple a job as it sounds. I know that we all have different skill levels, I think of myself as a reasonably competent home mechanic. I have done timing belts, replaced 'heads and 'head gaskets, clutches, taken engines out etc but I tried to replace a CV boot on my Octavia and ended up having to put it all back together again and take it to the dealer when I couldn't get the drive shaft off the hub. This is the first time in almost thirty years of playing with cars that I have had to admit defeat! I'm not saying that it can't be done or even that it is difficult, but it's not easy either!
  5. Well, I tried doing the boots myself but ended up giving up and taking the car to my dealer! This is the first time that I have ever had to do this in 27 years of doing DIY work on cars. I have built Hillclimb cars, changed clutches timing belts and cylinder heads, engines and gearboxes and have also done loads of work on motorbikes as well and have never been "beaten" before. What beat me? - the multitude of special tools needed I couldn't even fit the clips that hold the boots in place 'cos even they need a special tool. I commented on this to my dealer and he told me that they have over £35,000 worth of special Skoda tools and even that isn't the full set as they just buy in the tools when certain jobs come in! I will henceforth be sticking to oil and brake pad changes on my Octy and will confine my DIY to my bikes and my TVR!! Thanks for the help. P.S Just out of interest my dealer insisted that the driveshaft bolts did not need to be replaced on my car, I queried it and he told me that if the bolt needs to be replaced it would either come as part of the boot "kit" or it would be flagged up on the parts computer as a parted needed in conjunction with the boot kit.
  6. The car has 78,000 miles on it and is out of warranty. Thanks Jules, sorry for the delay not sure which codes you need so here are the lot from the front page of my service book. 1Z336C OCT LIM ELE HXU 9102 TA 77KW BKC Hope this means something to you! Thanks again.
  7. Thanks for that Do the boots come as a "kit" with the replacement driveshaft bolt, etc. or do I need to but the individual parts? (Still hoping someone can tell me the torques I need)
  8. Is that regardless of mileage be it high or low? Or is it 4 years or xxxxx miles?
  9. Thanks, I was looking at it from the wrong end! I have all the tools, just need the torques then............................anyone?..................................Please!
  10. I have spotted that both of my CV boots need replacing as they have split. Car is a 1.9 tdi with dsg 'box. Any advice please on the best way to do the job? What needs to be taken off? The off side looks like I could unbolt the drive shaft from the gearbox end and drop the shaft down to enable the old boot to come off and the new boot to go on. Looks like I can't do this with the near side as there is not room to drop the shaft. Also I understand that I may need to use replacement bolts and not re use the originals? Any advice much appreciated, thanks.
  11. I wish I'd known that a month ago, my dealer has just replace my whole fan motor at a cost of around £200 plus an hours labour!
  12. Took the car in to dealer today and have just heard back from them that it seems to be the fan motor which has "gone", replacement on order.
  13. Yes, had my flywheel replaced under warrantee (just!) at the 60,000 mile service and now this. Would the dealer diagnostics give an answer to this? I always thought that diagnostics were just for engine problems. Any one else had a dead climatronic?
  14. Help! Car is a 1.9 tdi, DSG with Climatronic. Has done 68,000 miles. The Climatronic is totally dead, the display works as it always has but the fan control isn't working. When I turn it right up the bar graph shows that it is on "full" but nothing happens, no air coming out at all. I've checked the fuse and that seems to be OK, even changed it just to make sure. Can anyone please give me some pointers as to what I should check for next. Thanks.
