Had a very similar problem with my Mk1 2003 Octavia TDI 110bhp. As it was under Skoda warranty I took it to them. They said it was either the air mass meter or fuel pump. They replaced the air mass meter under warranty but it made no difference so they replaced the fuel pump again under warranty. Completely cured it. Very expensive for them though. Good luck.

Hi. Fallen in love with the brand after many years as a VW lover. Bought an Octavia TDI Elegance from Wings of Peterborough in February this year. 1 owner, 22000 miles. Sold and serviced by them from new. Admiral Blue Metallic. Had cold starting problems. Air mass meter and fuel pump(Brand new.) replaced under warranty. All lovely now! I do a 150 mile round trip commute 4 times a week on very light traffic motorways (5-6AM) and this thing is averaging 57mpg!!!!! The computer being slightly more conservative than doing some sums. Being objective, I have to say that it has to be the best car I have owned. Being a bit of a petrolhead, i've had 2 Alfa's ( which, according to Clarkson makes me a true one!) and a lary 2.8 Capri but I have to say that this car tops them all. Build quality is as solid as I am used to with VW.

Bought 03 Octavia TDI with 22000 on the clock in Feb this year. Fantastic service. Didn't like starting from cold. 4 or 5 attempts followed by lots of white smoke(unburnt fuel). Back it went. Diagnostic said all ok but Wings said they would replace Air mass meter. No difference. Back again, this time a new fuel pump. ( Under warranty, thank God!). Now cured. Wings were superb throughout and I would recommend them to anyone.
