  1. Uncle bulgaria, you need a leather strop, even an old leather belt, to finish the blade, that way it'll hold it's edge longer. Remember the old barbers, always had a leather strop for the cut throats!
  2. I use Wusthof classics, fantastic quality, hold an edge very well, only been on the stone once in 3 years of heavy domestic use, a quick flash on the steel keeps them great. Henckels have gone downhill & become a little cheaper, not full tang construction anymore! I use a decent steel regularly 20 degree angle, & a whetstone if I need to re hone the angle of the blade, I have a 1000/3000 grit double sided stone, works great. This guy has more of an idea than Ramsey.

And Not the most likely of pairings there! Any modern diesel would have been a better bet for both power & performance.
  4. Those 'grunts' had not put themselves through a degree. They do not work shifts, they are not proffessionally registered & accountable. There job does not involve other peoples lives, literally. I am on a salary scale of £21-£27K before deductions, is that too much for a graduate with more than 20 years experience, working shifts? we don't even recieve any bank holiday pay, it's all flat rate, even Christmas. The only real benefit is a fair pension, & blinkered people like you want it pulled?
  5. We don't need your support, or even public opinion, god knows the government dont care about either. The repercussions of frontline strikes will be horrific. The problem is that the goverment have gven us NOWHERE esle to go. They won't negotiate, won't listen or budge an inch. Industrial action is the only weapon in the armoury, not a weapon any of us would ordinarily choose but one we know how to use! The NHS pension was reformed in 2008, members now pay more in for NO increase in benefits. The scheme in in profit! So why stiff us yet again?
  6. I am 39, I joined junior leaders at 16, served for 9 years in RAMC then joined the NHS as a Paramedic.I have self funded a BSc. so I've been public sector for 23 years. I am a senior Paramedic, tutor & assesor, I earn an outrageous £27K. My question is this, when times were good in the private sector, I met many grunts in unskilled/semi skilled private secter roles earning a lot more than me. In fact many took the mick at my salary. Where were you private sector keyboard warriors then, demanding a pay rise for the public sector? Where you heck as like! All was well with you jack B'stads when you were on the make, now it's gone bent you whine like ten men, blaming anyone other than yourselves. Your beady little green eyes, filled with jealousy, come to rest on the public sector pension....'it's not fair' 'make them pay'.....'they dont deserve it' I hear you all sqwark! Double standards at play here, no one shared the wealth when all was rosy, so you can poke your whining up your collective hoops. I earn my pension, I want it, & I'll fight to keep it. To be judged by those of you that fit the above profile will not cause me to lay awake at night! Remember to give us a wave on the picket line...toot toot!
  7. Just popped out to fuel up, had a very close look at my paintwork under the flourescent lights on the forecourt....absolutely no swirl marks whatsoever, a bloke filling up next to me said it looked 'amazing' so got to be happy with that.
  8. Hi all, With thanks to John (geordie_21) I have recieved a bottle of this Mantis instant shine cleaner. The idea being to clean the car using only the spray & microfibre towels. The blurb on the back says it contains silicone enhancers to fill imperfections & gloss boosters to increase water repellency. I tried it on my silver VRS which is machine polished, wearing Autoglym SRP, EGP & 2 coats of collinite 476. So not really any imperfections to fill. The car was essentially clean anyway, with just some water marks & some fine dust & a few flies, so really I used the Mantis as a quick detailer. The instructions tell you to apply with one MF cloth & buff with another, this stuff cleans flies & watermarks with ease, yet leaves a glossy smooth smear free finish.I felt thet the glossy finish was on a par with my Zaino Z8 QD that I usually use. Where the mantis is fantastic is around door shuts/sills etc, seems to bring aluminium & plastic up beautifully, with no hazing or residue left behind. I also found the JML branded MF cloths are very soft & quite thick, better than the Halfrauds ones I usually use. I'm not sure I'd use this system on a really dirty car, I snow foam before washing with the 2 bucket method (inc grit guards) with a lambswool mitt so I acknowledge I'm a bit OCD about swirl marks! I daresay Mantis would still out perform our eastern european hand car wash friends though! Overall I'm quite impressed with Mantis, I view it as an excellent quick detailer that will remove flies, bird sheeite, water marks & dust etc & saves so much time around the bonnet/tailgate & doorshuts etc.
  9. The local ambulance trust might want to contribute, given that your attendance at category A 999 calls counts for ORCON, & that is one of the performance measures they are measured by, & that performance has financial connotations!! In short, your voluntary efforts help the Trust attain a better budget.
  10. It says suitable for wood furniture on the back of my tin of colli.
  11. I'm fairly certain that the Octy estate TDi 90 did not come with 'fun' as standard though!
  12. No one cares what you think, your troll like nature regarding anything fiscal is well proven! save yourself the effort of typing a reply, I'm not listening!
  13. The surplus is in large part due to the 2008 NHS pension review, resulting in increased contributions from members for no additional pension benefit! This review was to ensure a cost effective, sustainable scheme. To review again 3 years later is totally unacceptable. There are strikes coming, & it will include frontline services, I believe the government & many members of the public have woefully underestimated the strength of feeling over the pensions in the NHS.
  14. Oh dear, Sorry mate, but you are talking rubbish! Do some research.......here's a start http://www.managementinpractice.com/article/22468/Health_service_pension_scheme_creates_surplus_%96_BMA?category.id=337 The NHS pension is funded by employers & staff, not the taxpayer & has created a surplus of cash this year.
  15. I'm in the public sector & I believe in getting what you pay for. So, given that many of you want to see my salary cut, pension smashed etc, & you still expect me to resuscitate your nearest & dearest even when I'm 66, carrying them down several flights of stairs etc, I think it's only right to warn you that you stand to be very dissapointed!
  16. In 07' the Desmo was 20 KPH faster than anything else out there! This year the Honda is the bike they all want. Stoner is an awesome rider but lacks any personality & ergo fails to engage with the crowd. Rossi will win races again, but the championship is Stoners to lose this year. With the new 1000's........thats gonna be mega, expect epic Stoner vs Rossi battles, two on only a handfull of GP riders who can still slide a bike on a godlike level.
  17. No, it wont be running on the ragged edge, yes you must notify your insurer. I am on my third remapped car, no issues. Just ensure you use a reputable tuner, Jabbasport, r-tech, Shark etc. For £250-300 you should have a reliable, progressive 135 ish BHP.
  18. I think the best Cal can do is 7th, behind the four Honda's one factory Yam (Lorenzo) & Rossi on the Duke. The Tech trois Yam just does'nt have the speed to do any more. What did Spies say about Crutchlow?
  19. A casualty can be safely removed from a car via a kendrick extrication device (KED)carried on pretty much every front line Ambulance, a vest tye piece of kit that immoblizes the spine, this does NOT require ANY cutting of the car. Any Paramedic trying to have an uninvolved car chopped needs to be reminded of this fact. Just state clearly that you do not consent to your car being 'modified' by the fire service!
  20. I like the MK2 TT. Funny that a few of the 'yes' votes come from Fabia & Lupo drivers, cars driven by nuns & REAL men, it would seem.
  21. Are you on drugs? Go & pay £22,000 for tuition to become a Paramedic, get paid 19,000 pa for shiftwork, work your nuts off on 12 hour shifts, often not getting ANY break, retire at 67 (if you live that long, many para's dont) & see how privileged YOU feel.
  22. The Ambulance service is beginning to rumble, conditions are right for the 'perfect storm'. Pay freeze for two years minimum, pension contributions to double, London weighting removed, term & conditions eroded etc. Redundancies will begin soon too, what else is a Paramedic supposed to do for a living? This is in the face of constantly increaseing demand. Anyone remember the Ambo strike of 89'?
  23. Thats a dead link you posted. Unless the respopnders are state registered paramedics accredited by the health professions council they DO NOT carry the same kit as paramedics FACT! This is a national standard, enforcable by law, special exemptions are not available in Nantwich! A bit of extra vocational (at best) training does not replace a paramedic qualification, formerly IHCD, now a Bsc in paramedic science. as for Crewe having a fully manned station, you missed the point, every urban area has a manned station, the crews are out pretty much constantly. There are very often outstanding calls, thus the rural trucks are pulled in to respond to them, depriving the rural area of cover. That's where the responder comes in. Your anecdotal evidence of having seen the responders in action, & having noted them being backed up within 5 minutes is by no means representative of the majority of calls. Particularly since the response targets have now changed. It used to be the case that for a first responders attendance to count towards our targets, there must be an ambulance on scene within 19 minutes of the call, this caveat has now been completely removed. as such, we are now regularly seeing solo's waiting for extended periods before being backed up. As far as my name having some link with the ambulance service goes, I am a state registered paramedic, 16 years service & counting. I endorse the principle of responders, just trying to clear up your incorrect statement. Please dont take this the wrong way, but I do this for a living & am closely involved in the politics of lay responding, having access to significant data on a national level, which, to be fair, is more credible than anecdotal evidence submitted by one individual who by their own admission is not personally involved in the topic being discussed.
  24. No, they did not! Lets keep it real folks. First responders are great, very decent of folk to give of their time so freely, they can & do make a difference from time to time. The fundamental issue particularly in rural area's is that because the attendance of a responder counts for ORCON ( <8 min Gov't target) this free's up the Ambulance to be dragged into the nearest metropolis, thus leaving the rural are deprived of cover. This, in some cases negates the principal of a responder, as there's no back up readily available to convey the patient to a place of definive care, usually A&E. This is in no way the fault of the good folk who volunteer, more a sad reflection of the NHS chasing more targets.
