  1. Thank you for all your advice. Instead of replacing the EGR valve I had it cleaned as suggested. Unfortunately after a month the warning light came back on. At about the same time the warning light for the power steering pump also came on. It seemed that I did need yet another EGR valve and a power steering pump. With the poor history of unreliability over 13 years I lost faith and so happily sold it.
  2. Thank you for the recent new posts, rum4mo, Tech1e and Trundlenut. I have printed out the info and will see if my garage will have a go at cleaning it. I will post the outcome which will not be for a few weeks when MOT is due.
  3. Thanks for the replies to date. It's a 16 valve 1.4 engine so it seems that delete can't be done as Sepulchrave says above. Possibly this also applies to blanking it off as suggested by CL53VRS. It's unfortunately out of the two year Skoda guarantee period. So I hope to get some more advice in response to the options I mentioned, replace with Skoda or cheaper new or clean. I am sceptical that a dealer will find a simpler solution than one of these as they haven't in the past.
  4. The engine management light is on again which I am sure means a faulty egr valve yet again. What do members with experience of this problem think are my best options? e.g. replace valve with new Skoda valve, or cheaper new valve or clean it. Would a dealer clean it and how long might this last? I wonder if the labour in cleaning it may not be much less than in replacing it. What might this cost in London? The last time was £275 at a Skoda dealer.
  5. Your post is a bit vague, when did you buy it and what are the costs to repair the faults you mentioned? I suggest you may be able to find competitive quotes for the work as in some areas there is keen competition but at the same time I suggest that the car is generally checked to see if other problems are evident. But buying another car at a similar price is also a risk. My own experiece of a Y reg Fabia over 11 years is that major repairs can be frequent and costly, I couldn't recommend one for reliability but I am crossing my fingers for the time being as well keeping the use to the minimum.
  6. Both door lights stopped working so I have changed one of the bulbs for a new one. But still not working! Any ideas as to the cause and remedy would be welcome.
  7. Thanks for your help. But good news for me as it turned out to be a faulty fuse costing £2.89 and not as diagnosed by the machine as needing a replacement ABS pump. So thanks to the ABS thread on Briskoda and some members pointing this out I seem to have saved myself maybe £1000!
  8. Any recommendations please for an independent garage near me i.e. Croydon/South London/North Surrey. I need to replace the ABS pump but would like to get a quote first.
  9. Hi, Could anyone recommend an independent garage in the Croydon/South London/North Surrey area to carry out this repair. Plus plenty more repairs judging from past experience. Also if someone has had this job done I would be interested in the cost. I expect to get one quote next week but would like a comparison.
  10. Thank you for your help. The problem was identified as a faulty angle sensor and was replaced at a cost of £325 including VAT at an approved garage in Croydon.
  11. Thanks for help. So far I have checked the oil with some difficulty as the cap is not under the battery but close by although stiff to remove, needs grips. The oil needed topping up but unfortunately the light still comes on after the engine warms up. So now I need diagnostic help and will take it to a VW outlet to find out the bad news. Will post again with the outcome.
  12. I have a problem with the power steering indicated by the warning light coming on after the car has been running for a while. However the location of the container for the hydraulic fluid isn' t shown in the handbook and bizarrely I can't find it although it's probably obvious. Could someone please let me know where it is and is it easy to top up? I guess if topping up doesn't work then it is a job for the garage possibly being an electrical problem. I would be grateful for advice on this. Enrie
  13. Last November the EGR valve and gaskets were renewed together with some cleaning at a cost of £255 by a Skoda dealer. Last week the light came on again and another Skoda dealer has diagnosed that the EGR valve is once more at fault and has to be replaced, estimate £273. What would be a reasonable response by the first Skoda dealer in respect of the doubtful original repair?
  14. I have experienced the sad, expensive and seemingly common repairs at this mileage, anti-roll bar, air-con faults, clutch master cylinder, cooling problems and ahead suspension bushes, etc. £350. So I would like to get some idea of possible future repairs for the next 20,000K, probably four years for me. I could then decide if a more reliable car would be better. Those of you who have done over 35, 000 and beyond 55, 000 could you please give me possible typical repairs that may lie ahead. Also how long might my renewed anti-roll bar last, a lot longer than the original I hope! Thanks for any experience of this matter.
  15. Thanks for all the replies. It's clearly a good idea to replace the cambelt every four years but strange that something important like this is omitted from the Skoda service schedule. Presumably they have got round to including it in the schedule for new Fabias.
  16. I recently needed an annual service for my Fabia 1.4 at 35,000 miles and eight years old. However the Skoda garage said that the cambelt should be replaced every four years which was then done. But looking through the Skoda service schedule there is no mention of this and only that the cambelt on diesels should be replaced at 60,000 miles. So have the cambelts been failing with dramatic consequences for the petrol engine Fabias? How has this come about, the experiences of other Fabia owners would be welcome. Also if I had not had the service by a Skoda dealer would this new need have been missed?
