Well Mark I had a problem with my gearbox for awhile.. I was finding it hard to get in gear and not shifting as smoothly as expected.. Also coming up to junctions when the car was rolling at a snails pace when engaging first it grinded/clunked into gear... Got two mechanics to check it out with no solution only change the gearoil.. Anyways long story short last week took off from a junction going from first into second a loud bang occurred! Not saying this will happen to yours but mite be worth taking a good look at the gearbox.. The end result of the bang was a new gearbox and clutch. New clutch due to all the gearoil all over the clutch causing it to slip and a 2" hole in the gearbox... When the gearbox was out on inspection a bearing had broke and caused the large hole in the gearbox casing :thumbdwn: Probably not much help but thats my experience anyways... Got her back today and going like a train so smiles all round again!!

just sourced a second hand gearbox for £200 from an audi 1.8T with 50K on it hopefully it'll do the job. Got new clutch for €270euro might get away with not making too much of a whole in the wallet!! Thanks for the comments as always

Thanks again for reply.. only noise in fourth.. so hopefully not the diff! Will mention it to my mechanic see what he says.. would it be worth changing clutch first and see how it runs before the gearbox? What is the best way to diagnose the problem take the clutchand gearbox out for a look?

There was gear oil pouring out and a whine from the engine when driving after it happened... also the clutch seems to be slipping maybe due to all the oil leaking?? I wonder does that help... Any symptoms if the diff is gone??

As title reads my gearbox in my 04 VRS has given up with only 44k on the clock!! So need some help with gettin it sorted.. Would you recommend a brand new gearbox and clutch or go for second hand gearbox and clutch??? also will any VAG 1.8T gearbox and clutch fit or will it have to be for vrs?? Next question is prices for these items and any help in sourcing these will be gratefully appreciated..

Just away from my vrs at the mo and looking for the tyre size of the 17" Standard Alloys on the vrs.. Need to ring the local garage and order new tyres! What brand should i get have conti's at the mo. Thanks Lads
