  1. Had the EGR valve cleaned this morning, the problem has solved. Thanks again for your advice.
  2. Hi, Merry Christmas and happy new year! Yesterday when I was driving at around 50 km/h at 4th gear, I heard a " hiss" sound and suddenly my car lost its power. I stopped my car and restart it again, trying to move it but the engine just cut off. There were no warning lights on so I had no idea what the problem was. An hour later, road assistance man came and he revved the engine and drove the car back and forth, no problems occurred. He did not know the problem so he towed my car to his garage. When I rang them this morning, I was told it could be a EGR valve issue. My car is a 2005 1.9 tdi Octavia, with over 120k kilometres on the clock. I am doing around 50k kilometres a year and I service it every 12k kilometres. Could it be a EGR issue? Or if it is, should I just have it cleaned or buy a new on? Thank in advance for your answer!
  3. Yes, I checked the mat, nothing to do with it. The clutch is not stuck on the floor. It goes up but stop at halfway position.
  4. My 05 Octavia 1.9 TDI has recently developed two problems. these problems are not happening all the times so far. 1. when I release the clutch, it won't go up fully, only half way up. This happens often when I stuck in the traffic and need to press the clutch frequently. 2. when the revs are higher than 3000, when I change into 2nd or 3rd gear, sometimes I can hear the "clunk" sound. If I change into 5th gear from 3rd or 4th, I can't go into it, feeling like hit a wall. These problems never happen when I change gear at around 2k revs, only happen when the revs are higher than 3k. My local garage can't pinpoint the problem. He told me it won't affect the gear box. He suggest me not change the clutch until it totally gone. I am still not sure about this, please give me some opinion. Thanks.
  5. I bet you are using windows 7 system. Elsawin doesn't support that. I bought one several months ago. The software is extremely difficult to install even I tried it on my old windows xp laptop. I followed all the steps on the manual and after several houres i eventually installed it, but I couldn't get any information out of it. Good news is they don't cost much. Since my old xp laptop was stolen and all the new laptops on the Market using window 7, I now just throw them in a draw and never bother touching them again.
  6. Hi, I usually service my car every 15k km, I presume that's around 12k miles. But at the recent service, I only got long life oil. Does this mean I can service my car every 30k km now? If that is the case, do I still need to change my oil filter and air filter every 15k km? Another question is: I still don't know the difference between fixed service and variable service. Take my habbit of servicing my car as an example, I change the oil, the oil filter and the air filter every 15k, change the fuel filter every 30k and change the polen filter every 60k, do you call this fixed service or varialbe service? Last question, a mechanic told me that if you top up the oil with different brand, you can't start the engine, is this right? I never dare to try it myself, just in case I have to change the whole lot well before the next service due.
  7. where is the bay? Is it ebay? You can't save much on the painting job though. I asked several people, the price ranged from 60 to 80 euro.
  8. The shell is 80 euro from the dealer plus 60 euro to have it painted.
  9. I presume driving a Merc will be more comfortable? Never driven a Merc myself though.
  10. Do you have problem starting the car when the engine is hot? That's the battery problem. I had the same problem several months ago. When the engine was cold, no problem starting. When the engine was hot, it was getting increasingly difficult to start. After I changed the battery no problem ever since. There is a thread about this before, you can check it out.
  11. Last night when I was driving, the ABS and TCS light came on and remained on. This happened to me once or twice before. Usually I just stopped the car and switched off the engine and then restarted it, the light would go off. Last night I did the same trick but it didn't work. The light just remained on. I continued driving for around another 40 minutes and restarted the engine again. This time it worked and the light went off eventually. I know there is a button on the dashboard controlling TCS light. In my case, when the light was on, the button didn't work either. Do you think because the TCS doing too much work on these icy roads hence cauing the problem? I just want to ask: a. Is there any danger continue driving the car when the lights are on? b. will it cause any damage to the system? c. will it be expensive if I want to have it sorted in a garage? or worth doing that?
  12. I don't know why you guys think these snow socks working. I put one pair my self on a snowing night. At first I thought they were brilliant, then when I turned a corner, my car made a 180 degree turn and scared the hell out of me. thank god there were no cars beside me otherwise there would have been a serious accident. I drove a lot more carefully afterwards especially when I was making the turn. but still the car spinned alot at another two occasions. Mind you, this spinning thing have never happened to me before when my car had no snow socks on. so my opinion is that unless you put two pairs on, you are better off without them. Also, they wear out very quickly once you hit the tarmic. my pair worn out after just one night, because I made one trip to the airport. I tried to maintain the speed at 50 km/hr, making me very stupid when the other cars passing me at 80. I now put winter tyres on and I love them. they are too much better than the snow socks and works out cheaper in the long run.
  13. there is no harm at all to put small amount of petrol in a disel engine. As a matter of fact, I deliberately put 4 liters of petrol and then top up with disel several days before I go through NCT test. This method will help clean up the injector and make you car easily pass the test.
  14. I have had my Octavia for 2 years and I think it is a brilliant car. I will be forced to change my current car in 2012, without a doubt I will still choose Skoda. I probably will update to Superb though. I've noticed there are many brands have taken stop and start technology while Skoda seems immune to that. Anybody here driven any cars with that technology? is it any good? Why don't Skoda take it if it is truely good? Please enlighten me.
  15. the alloys are exactly the same as mine. I paid 600euro from the dealer. :( One month later one of my friends told me if I told him, he could have got them for me for 400 euro along with four brand new tyres. :'(
