  1. Hi I've a 1.4 16v Octy that I can't find much information about. She's been off the road for good 6 or so months now. Trying to decide where to go from here...sell or keep.... She's got 90k miles on the clock and needs replacement shocks to go back on the road. Has the common idling issue (ok-ish after a load of carb cleaner) ; keeps going through 1l of oil in 1k - 1.5k miles ; rear doors are deadlocked (both...lock motors seem to be gone). Otherwise drives fine It's fine for driving around town and the occasional longer drive but do admit that the engine is very weak.....don't know what kind of a muppet decided to put a 1.4 into a car this size OR why on earth did I buy it in the first place.... It should be obvious to just get a new car with a bigger engine but it's going to cost me more than I'd like.... What are the main issues with given engine (AUB me thinks)? I do rev it quite a bit...just to get it moving.... A mechanic I know has told me that due to the engine's small size and the car being big the revving is eventually gonna kill it.....not sure how true but the last thing I want is basically driving something I know will die just because of the way I drive it..... Any opinions would be appreciated. Especially engine related. If anybody has any experience with a 1.4 16v lump (even better if in an Octavia) please leave your comments. PS! sorry for missing commas.....keyboard gave up today
  2. sorry have been away for a while. Once it stalls & you try to start again, there are three possible outcomes (all of them happened to me already): 1) engine will start and run normally 2) revs go up high as with normal starting but the needle falls back to 0rpm 3) revs go up high as with normal starting but the needle falls back to around 500 rpm and engine is struggling to stay running. ave still not had a chance to get fault codes read....yeah, i'm broke
  3. DIY job? how long would it take? cleaning the thing i mean
  4. Hi, I've done lots of searching but didn't find anything that'd exactly match my issue. My 1.4 16v MK1 Octy dies randomly every now and then. It's running fine most of the time but the odd time I start the car & the revs would be lower than normal and jumping up and down as if the car was struggling to keep the engine running. Then when I rev it up a bit and suddenly release the accelerator pedal, the revs would simply drop to zero. After that it's a real pain to get the car running again. Have to try several times to get the revs to stay normal. It is annoying as sometimes the car would stall changing gear while the clutch is pressed. Especially bad going around corners and losing power steering. The dealer thought it could be the filter (checked....as new) or some kind of chamber the electric air pump uses (it's mentioned in Haynes but i'm not able to locate it). This isn't making any sense as the "dying" is really smooth. I'd expect a chocking engine to judder. Some people have mentioned fuel pump relay. What do you guys think?
  5. I'll look into it. Will see the main dealer, possibly this afternoon, thanks
  6. As far as I know he ran into me between the wheel arch and the wheel (driver's side). There's a small dent in the A-pillar. Have a look at the link in my first post. Now that you've mentioned it, I'm a little more worried :( I do think tho, that the dent doesn't seem big enough to do any damage to the frame. But I'm no expert. That ******* was travelling at around 30mph
  7. Couldn't agree more :thumbdwn: I think they should be: a) shot at scene jailed c) made pay by law!!! Nice bit of advice Taken into consideration:)
  8. Yeah, I would like to go that route but it's simply about me not being able to afford the repairs at the moment :( Looks like I have to stop using the car for a while as the service is due & this hit dis some damage to the front axle/suspension. The handling is.....how to put it......french?? Can't feel the road at all :thumbdwn:
  9. Hi everyone, After being hit by a scooter http://briskoda.net/octavia-i/hit-scooter/148486/ i've notice the handling being much worse than it was. Instead of being as sharp as it used to be, it now feels like an old french car  I can't really understand what's wrong with it. There's the old squeak (think bushes) & frond shocks seem to be on their way out (87k miles). There's a bit too much swinging after going over a ramp & body roll is quite bad. The car just doesn't feel safe anymore and I don't have the confidence I used to as I can't feel the road properly... Have no idea if that could have anything to do with the crash or is it just the suspension being dodgy... Any thoughts welcome
  10. Ok, the guy is not picking up when I'm trying to call him. Have tried from 3 different numbers. Sent him a text a few days ago saying that I'm expecting him to cover all costs and if he won't be in touch with me soon I'll have to go to court. Looks like court it is then. Have been waiting for over 24h now. What a cu*t !!!
  11. Address is something I do have Have been trying to call him and offer to cover the costs based on a main dealer quote (€1800) Haven't got through yet but will keep trying. In case he refuses to pay, I'll go the small claims court / MIB route. Whichever is faster :( He will pay, one way or the other. Don't care how but he will I do not want to hear about him having to support the family and having no money. Should not be driving uninsured in the first place!! PS! if you guys want a laugh - think I haven't mentioned but a short description of him goes like this: 30-year-old Romanian Nazi, on a scooter Why Nazi? he had a swastika tattooed on both of his ears:rofl:
  12. That's partially done Copper said he will be done for no insurance and (!!!) for having no licence Court sounds tempting too:thumbup: Re knees - :shhh:
  13. Good thinking I'll look into that for sure Got in touch with the ******* today, demanding money for repairs (quoted €1800 @ main dealer). Might not be what I'm gonna pay but that's the quote and he should cover it. He got all excited and said is gonna sue me for causing him injuries. Got in touch with the officer @ the scene and was told they've reached a conclusion he was @ fault. I'll keep you all posted as the whole ordeal goes on. Should know exactly what's gonna happen by Friday or so Keep the ideas coming :trampolin
  14. Thinking the same. I'm alright but it's the car I feel sorry for:( I mean, how on earth did this thing manage to make a hole in the door:confused: And a dent in the A-pillar?? Thanks, I think it's worth looking at. Might be faster than MIB (reading about people waiting well over 18 months). Details are a bit odd tho. I mean the only things coppers got off him were dob, address, name & number. He didn't carry any ID or whatever. Having trouble to get in touch with the copper @ scene as well. Never at the station. Left details in a number of times - no reply :orb_sword
  15. Don't wanna be rude but....he kind of deserved to be hurt....running red lights nearly hitting pedestrians & causing my poor car the pain...what a @#"!
  16. re silver matching - I'm gonna see how well the door matches (off a same year silver octy). Does buffing help at all? The wreck was in sunlight at a dismantlers place, color looks a bit tired... PS! Call me stupid but: how do you quote multiple posts in 1 reply?
  17. We do indeed - MIBI Only downside here that I'll have to fork out the cash myself and hopefully get the refund in around 18 months time:( Don't trust the system - the copper showed feck all interest when I said the dude on the scooter admitted to having no insurance...that's messed up...
  18. got around 20 quotes today - all in the 250 to 300 range. Would go for rattle-cans from Halfords if I knew the result's gonna be ok. Also have heard that silver's hard to match. How true's that? Re scooter - I would've had to pay someone to actually get the wreck off me (he did go in at high speed, no brakes applied)
  19. I'd try disconnecting it or swapping with one that wasn't hit. Find out if it's just the sensor causing trouble & get it replaced
  20. Figured it might be easier sharing the pain. Was at a T junction on friday, waiting for a left turn. As soon as I had the right of way, checked both sides and moved off. Then out of nowhere - bang on my right side and a dude goes flying over the bonnet. First thoughts - I'm in deep ****e but after a moment people started coming up to me saying it wasn't my fault. The mupet on a scooter went straight through red lights, across a pedestrian crossing and into my driver side wing/door/wheel. After kindly asking if he was alright (which he was), asked for his insurance details. Turned out the ******* didn't have insurance. I'm only covered third party fire and theft. Coppers didn't give rats **** about the fact....he didn't even have ID, just gave his details (don't know how true) and they let him walk!! The Damage: Hole in front door (how??), wrecked front wing, no indicator and the odd play in front wheels when kicking them. Gonna have the axle checked. A dent in A pillar is also odd... Managed to get a "new" door today. Couple of stone chips, matching color & otherwise good condition. Just need to move trim, window etc from the damaged to the new one and it should be straight swap. Got a front wing as well. Dirt cheap but wrong color and sliiight rust here and there. Will prep & see if worth bringing to a paint shop. If not will buy a new one and have that painted. Never thought getting a panel sprayed could be so expensive. Quoted €300 today. Is there any way I could get matched paint in rattle-cans & laquer from Halfords & do a proper job myself? Any help, opinions welcome
  21. couldn't agree more...wish i could get a new one from UK & not pay the reg tax
  22. have a look at my reply to bengie....the numbers to be exact...I've finance outstanding on the octy at the moment.....only viable option would be importing from UK then....or trade in and get brand new shining VRS next year....(hard call tho...really attached to curent car, it being my first & all :P) will have to do with investing a few hundred into handling (couldn't care less about fiddling with the 1.4:rofl:)
  23. I know what you mean. But as I'm based over in Dublin, I have to consider that my car's still worth €4-5k over here (paid 7k a year ago). Then there's the VRT (around 2k eur) if I'd import & I'm not touching anything done over 80k miles. A friend did get a 2003 passat from UK a few months back for 4k. PS. the octy vrs mk 1 in a decent condition is still priced in the 10k range over here....nuts Also i'm only 22 & paying 2k a year insurance atm.... re brakes - my money's down for ebc ultimax (285mm - stock size) & green stuff pads....no extras needed. But since you mentioned it....might look into importing one....
