  1. Could you tell me what you mean by 'the light unit'. Happy to try this but not sure what you are referring to. Thanks
  2. About 6 weeks ago the interior courtesy lights started behaving strangely, staying on whilst driving and not coming on when they should. This persisted for a few days and then they stopped working altogether, which is still the situation. The lights themselves work when I switch them to manual operation. The door switches work OK because the little red lights at the bottom of the door come on when a door is opened. I have tried disconnecting the battery and that made no difference. I have also checked the fault codes and there is nothing related to courtesy lights. Any clues as to what might be faulty? Could it be a fuse?, if so which one? Any help would be appreciated.
  3. I sealed my nearside rear door with the help of self tappers back in March (page 18). Since then there have been many heavy showers and my carpet is bone dry! Thanks to micklecats for acknowledging and using the idea, hopefully others will also benefit.
  4. I have owned my Fabia for nearly 3 years and have tried twice to fix this problem with limited success. This time after stripping off the door panel I realised the real reason for the problem. The door carrier is made of aluminium and is quite soft. The area where the leaks occur is at the lowest point and this area is not supported due to the long span between the fixing bolts. It therefore bows away from the door making the job of sealing it even more difficult. I decided that the best way of reducing the possibility of leaking was to force this area onto the door and the simplest way to do this was to use self tapping screws. I therefore drilled 3 holes knowing there was nothing behind to damage. Then I put in the 3 self tappers as shown in the link below. I then covered the offending area with Wickes Roofing Felt Adhesive (as I had a tin already and it had worked well on my flat roof). I have yet to prove this works but I feel more confident. I will post again after some heavy rain to confirm success or otherwise! http://www.morozj.plus.com/
  5. I have owned my 2001 Fabia since April 2008 and have had 4 common faults:- 1. Coolant temperature sensor - changed it myself 2. Rear doors leaked - Sealed with bathroom sealant, had a couple of goes but seems to be OK now. 3. Steering angle sensor - Changed by local garage, didn't fancy doing it myself. 4. Evaporator Temperature sensor (or dog sensor as the spares man called it) - Changed it myself today, will hopefully fix the air conditioning. Took less than 1.5 hours. I just wanted to say a big thank you to all those you have contributed to this forum by their technical guides and comments, it really helps. I also invested in a stand alone diagnostic tool which has already paid for itself. Perhaps someone would like to predict the next common fault!!
  6. Thanks very much for the suggestions, I'll try them next time it happens, if it does...... These modern cars are far too clever for my liking - 'soft reset' indeed!
  7. This query is a good few months old with no responses. My front windows have also decided to spontaneously auto open. It has happened 3 times in a short period and not since. Is this a 'feature' which is being activated when it shouldn't? A friend has a Land Rover which opens all the windows if the remote button is kept pressed down for a few seconds, apparently to let the air in just before you get in the vehicle! Any guidance would be welcome. Thanks 2001 Fabia Estate 1.9TDi
  8. Hello to all. Good to find there is a community supporting Skoda owners. I have recently bought a 2001 Fabia Estate 1.9Tdi and am very pleased with it so far. I previously owned a 1995 Citroen ZX estate 1.9TD which got up to 216,000 miles before I decided to quit while I was ahead. When researching for a replacement, I discovered that the newer Citroen engines are nowhere near as rugged and reliable as the block in the ZX. I was attracted by the reliability reports on the Fabia and, of course, the excellent VW engine. Hopefully I will have a good experience with it, time will tell! John
