  1. Thanks langers2k & Paulski for clearing this up for me. Hopefully I won't have to use it, but it'll be handy to help someone else out if needed. Thanks again, Wingco
  2. Hi All, I have looked for the answer here and elsewhere, but haven't found a specific answer. The mk3 Octavia owner's manual, p290 fig. 336 says you "use ground point "A" if you have stop start sys. without stop/start, connect -ve to engine block or solid metal part bolted to it as your ground point". I don't have stop/start sys. I recently bought a NOCO GB40 lithium boost jump starter, the -ve cable is too short to reach any ground point other than point "A". My thoughts are ground point "A", is the obvious ground point - with or without stop/start - what is the real technical reason (obviously above my pay grade), as to why I should not use it, as the manual implies? Thanks for your help
  3. To All, The reason I wanted to know about mpg is that I'll be replacing it with my fourth Octavia around this time next year, but I've only had diesels up till now. My thoughts are that diesel private car ownership may become untenable with future pollution legislation that I feel is not too far away. As my next car will probably be my last one, I don't want to be an out of pocket victim of some half-baked government compo scheme. So thanks very much for the responses, you've all been most helpful, just the sort of info I needed - and g'day to Gerrican. Cheers.
  4. Hi All, Can a few owners of a 1.4 TSI mk3 Octavia give me some idea of their real fuel consumption please? Estate / hatch, manual / DSG, whatever you have. Short commutes, long runs, motorways, driver only or fully loaded - all welcome. But please don't go off piste - I don't need to know about this or that TDI, (been there, done that), I just need to know about your 1.4 TSI Octavia only. Cheers
  5. Hi All, I'm considering getting my first ever estate next year having had three Octavia hatches since 2002. I'd like to know whether an estate would be noisier inside than the hatch, given the same engine, wheels & tyres? If you've had both yourself, I'd like to hear your opinion. Thanks
  6. I had to chuckle when I saw this post as I was all set to post the very same thing. The only difference is I've got the 1.6 TDI (DSG) and mostly do just short runs. The first thing I thought when I saw the high tickover at the traffic lights was the dpf was doing a regular passive regen. I tend to do the same as a lot of members do and I took it for a run on the nearby M23. Usually it's completed in 10 miles or so in sport mode. I couldn't figure out why the tickover was still at 950rpm after 40 odd miles. When I got home and switched off there was no hot exhaust smell and fan running on. I spoke to my local dealer's service manager and the first thing he asked me was did I have the a/c on (yes I did). He suggested going for a run with no a/c running and see what happens. Sure enough the tickover stayed at 750 throughout a 50 mile run. When just 3 miles from home at the lights, I turned the a/c on and within 5 seconds the tickover went up to 950rpm. I felt a bit silly for not figuring out for myself what was going on. This is one to remember as I was thinking all along that it was a faulty DPF sensor.
  7. Has anyone here had any success getting this elusive bit of £95 bling, I mean trim (p/n: 5E5064711A) from their dealer? My outfit have had it on order for a while now with no sign of it coming yet.
  8. I ordered my new Octavia two weeks ago and have been following this thread with concerned interest. I've since seen for myself a couple in showrooms with this problem, is anyone able to update the situation with these 2-3mm B pillar/seal gaps please? BTW what is DISS procedure?
  9. I stumbled upon this: http://www.skoda.lv/files/accessories/octavia.pdf and the situation we UK owners face peeved me sufficiently to e mail SUK. If and when I hear from them I'll let you know. Feel free to jump on the bandwagon and ask for yourselves, maybe consumer power will change things for the better: Dear Customer Services Team, I have recently ordered my third consecutive Skoda Octavia. I would like to enhance the appearance of my pride and joy further by adding some optional items that are not available to Skoda Octavia customers here in the UK. The items listed below, and several others not listed are however freely available on the European mainland: 1/ 5E5 061 109 Multi functional boot storage box 2/ 5E5 064 711 Loading sill protective trim (blk) 3/ 5E5 064 711B Loading sill protective trim (alu) * 4/ 5JA 061 109 Removable boot tray 5/ Small sports red leather package I am of a mind to ask Skoda at Mlada Boleslav direct but perhaps initially it would be better to find out from yourselves at Skoda UK why this should be the situation. * I am aware there are qty. 10 of these held at Skoda UK and are priced @ £47 50p each but that they are not available for customers to buy, why would that be please? I am sure I speak for thousands of other UK based loyal Skoda Octavia owners, who know a really good car when they own one, would be interested to know why the standard fit hatchback window belt line chrome trim is not available here, as well as why we are restricted in choosing yet more desirable optional extras to enhance our new Skoda Octavia. I look forward to your comments please,
  10. Only on the rare occasions when all the washing up's done, the hoovering & the dusting is done and the lawns are mowed.....
  11. Thanks pipsyp. Having read the Jun '13 brochure again I can now see what you say is quite right and that it's now part of "intelligent light assist". If they had just printed in the brochures that it also incorporates an ADRVM it would have made things clearer - to me anyway. As for intelligent light assist it's a £440 option on an SE. For me personally, my £440 will go towards the "intelligent parking assistant" at least then the wife might feel a bit more confident parking the thing!
  12. Well I've opened a can of worms here!...I've just found a whole new world of clay bars, C-Quartz ceramic coatings, Swissvax, ph neutral snow foam & all sorts of fings I've never heard of. I obviously need to get out more. In view of your comments I'll give the Lifeshine a miss I think. As for the Silverseal my candy white still looks great as I say. So is it the silver seal, is it the irregular Autoglym shampoo, or is it after all because I chose candy white twice in a row on my mk 1 & 2 for the very reason that white just doesn't show the imperfections that other colours show? As for trying to decide on a different colour I now feel like the ball in a pinball machine going from pillar to post. Perhaps I'll stick with what I know and choose candy white yet again. I've found a couple of pro detailers in my area so when the time comes, with whatever colour I decide upon, I'll take it to one of them. Thanks again to you all for pointing me in the right direction and advancing my education.
  13. Hi All, As far as I can see there's no mention of an Auto Dimming Rear View Mirror for any model in Mar, Jun or Aug's Mk 3 brochure, so am I right in thinking that an ADRVM is part and parcel of the Elegance's rain sensor and therefore not available for an SE?
  14. Thanks for your replies gents, needless to say, I'm still undecided. I can only add that whatever I do decide upon I'll have £500's worth of Autoglym's "Lifeshine" applied before I pick it up. This is the dealer's recommendation. At the time, (Sep '10) when I got my candy white Mk2 FL, I acted upon the same dealer's recommendation that I had it "Silver Sealed" before collection, which I did. In the near 36 months since, the car still gleams like the day I got it. All it's ever had in that time is not too regular Autoglym shampoos. If the lifeshine performs as well as the silver seal has then I'll be happy. Were I to keep my mk2 FL I would really like to give it a good waxing but alas it's physically beyond me. It's lasting shine is down to silver seal and/or the shampoo. As I write this I'm coming to realise that perhaps the Corrida red with it's tendency to oxidise more readily than other colours, might just be a bit too high maintenance for me. I still like my candy white but the touch up pens are not a very good match so I'm thinking I might go for RB as it can't be any worse. As I said, the next car I hope will be my last one and have avoided, but always admired the look of metallics. In over 40 years as a steering wheel attendant, to end up with RB which I think is a beautiful colour is very much a decision of the heart and not the head. I just hope I don't live to regret it. Thanks again chaps for your input.
  15. Hi to All here, I've whittled it down to these two colours for my new Octavia. Please can someone tell me what sort of match I can expect from the Corrida red touch up pen brush. I'm tempted to stick to a solid colour but all reds seem to suffer more than other colours from sun fade. Maybe modern paints and regular waxing is the answer but what about the "old tech" cellulose based Corrida red touch up pen, will I end up with orange spots (not me....the car)? As for Race blue I've really got "the hots" for it and it would be my first metallic on what will hopefully be my last car (getting a bit long in the tooth you see!.... Thanks for your advice.
