  1. Cheers mate- i'm leaning towards the DSG on the basis that it's useful daily, whereas 4x4 capability only really comes in to play for 3 weeks of the yr max
  2. Think its haldex. My current car is similar Mazda system - FWD until it detects slip then sends power to other wheels. Not quattro i know but coped pretty well in recent weather, traction wise
  3. Cheers James. Just to play devil's advocate, my own thinking is that 4x4 would be useful for that 1 month out of 12 that the snow comes whereas DSG is something I'd be enjoying day in day out (most of my driving is around Greater London with occasional motorway journeys). Any chance of a TDi 4x4 DSG in next couple of months?
  4. RIght folks, it's been a while but i could do with some guidance. Was after a Superb on contract hire when it was first launched and posted on here at the time but, sadly, the figures wouldn't work. Increased budget for this yr means that it's finally on the cards  Dilemma i have is DSG or 4x4? Now I've previously had DSG in a Golf and loved it and I'm currently driving a 4x4 which has come into its own in the last 2 winters so ideally it would be both but the 3.6 is just not feasible. So which is to be sacrificed? I'm looking at a CR170 TDi Elegance (maybe the Combi, budget allowing). I know i could go FWD and winter tyres but I'm not sure on the merits as against proper 4x4 capability. Any views appreciated
  5. And then wait for a disconcerting split second of nothing before power kicks in with a shove. I've had a DSG for the last 3 years and it's something you have to live with. Overall it's a great piece of engineering though
  6. I personally don't take any notice of COTY - same as everyone on here it seems! My issue is with these conflicting reviews you see as I would like to be able to rely on them when, for eg, compiling a shortlist of cars without testing every car in the class. Testers will always have differences of opinion on certain things (looks, design etc) but i refuse to believe that 2 testers get in the same car and one gets out thinking, "smooth ride, very refined" and the other one thinks "rides like suspension's made of wood and couldn't hear myself think"!
  7. ..goes to the Vauxhall Insignia. The Superb came 6th:thumbdwn: Car Magazine's editor was one of the judges and marked the Superb down for it's "jolty ride" and lack of refinement (wind noise and "gruff" PD engines). The Insignia scored on ride, refinement and cabin quality. Firstly, I've only test driven a Superb but don't remember being jolted about, even on 18" wheels. The ride was pretty good on all surfaces. There was some wind noise at motorway speeds but not too intrusive and the 170CR is not gruff. Secondly, when the first reviews started coming in on the Insignia I'm sure it was criticised for, surprise surprise, gruff diesels and patchy cabin quality and the Superb praised for refinement and smooth ride! I can understand opinions are subjective but how can 2 journos driving the same car come up with opposite assessments on the same issue? Ride can't be jolty and smooth and either the car is quiet or it's not.
  8. Just to bring the thread back on track after the "spanners v butter" debate, if I placed an order for a manual 170 elegance now when can i realistically expect delivery?
  9. Needed the car for Jan 09 as a replacement for the current motor which goes back to the leasing co. Been scrabbling around for months trying to get one within budget and now looks like it's back to the drawing board
  10. Sorry folks. Posted on this thread as i was trying to get to the bottom of how the whole discount/pricing system works and a lot of members seemed to be posting on this.
  11. Right I've read most but not all of this (long) thread. Most of it seems to relate to private purchasers. What about business users looking to contract hire a SuperbII? I'm getting quotes and the variation in prices is ridiculous. I'm talking almost £140 p/mnth between my cheapest and most expensive quotes :eek:with plenty inbetween for the same vehicle over the same term with the same mileage. Can anyone explain how the whole thing works as the prices seem to be plucked out of the air? Although that last comment doesn't apply to a certain person not too far from here who was at least able to give a reasonable explanation for their quote... I'm in a partnership so although it's the "business" paying, it's my money and in the current climate we've even had to reduce that budget and agree that the balance comes from our pockets personally. With the wildly varying quotes the whole process gets very frustrating believe me.:(
  12. Definitely. My Golf's got rear wiper which automatically gives you a sweep when you engage reverse if front wipers are on. Even with parking sensors theres no substitute for clear glass
