  1. Excellent, thank you very much for the speedy response. Presumably the earth wire doesnt need to be any particular gauge, just be of reasonable condition and thickness ? Also, can I hard wire in the yellow 12v memory back up wire to the +power on the battery as well as the main red power wire, as there is no ignition to speak of to wire this through. Not even sure if this will be required as I don't think stored presets etc are going to be required, just the facility to play cd's mainly. The last power related wire is blue and is the for the power antenna, and as we're not putting in an amp I assume thsi can be totally ignored. Cheers again.
  2. Afternoon peeps, Not sure if this is the right place to post this, so mods please feel free to re-locate if not. Strange query, but basically I have been asked to help wire up a head unit and speakers to,,,wait for it,,, a 1980's Harley Davidson/AM Golf Buggy. Don't ask ! I have an idea how to do the speakers etc, and how to wire the main power up directly to the battery (with a suitable wire and fuse etc) and the aeriel, but I'm not sure of the best way to safely and securely earth the actual head unit ? It doesnt have a wiring harness/connector block and just has the individual wires coming our of the back. The Power Supply description is '12 Volts DC Negative Ground' which I assume is pretty standard, and the wiring diagram shows the black earth wire coming out of the back of the head unit, and connecting via two branches to the negative point on the battery and to a separate 'Negative Ground'. Is this just supposed to be grounded to the metal bodywork ? The buggy is mainly fibreglass I believe and the only metal structures seem to be the chassis sub-frame or the engine block. Any suggestions on how to do this as safely as possible, or does anyone have a link to a basic guide on direct installation. {The google ones all seem to refer to using wiring adapters and harnesses for cars etc) May seem like a noob question so apologies in advance, i seem to have been given the job as I fittted a couple of stereos to original minis over 10 years ago, but they were easy and just got grounded to the bulk heads etc. And I havent done any since. Anyway, any help or pointers would be greatly appreciated. (Thanks in advance)
  3. Hello, and welcome. May have to pick your brains re detailing when the weather gets a bit better !
  4. Quick update: the car has been back in a couple of times since purchase for a wheel bearing & leaking rear washer jet (warranty covered both, without question), a service, replacing the cambelt, water pump & pre-tensioner etc, and finally the usual lambda sensor replacement (again warranty covered, without question). Friendly service each time, particularly from Dave in service. Went back today with my brother and he was also so impressed that he also bought an Octavia from Paul. (with a bit of added banter from Alan thrown in for good measure) Keep up the good work guys.
  5. Thanks again Bodge. And tell me about the noise ! Had some really strange looks sat at traffic lights in town with it whining away. Will attempt to disconnect over the weekend when I replace the indicator. No doubt i'll be back on here shortly afterwards having broken something else in the process !!
  6. Cheers Bodge, Is the motor the black box at the side of the bulbs ? On the right as you look down on the drivers side.
  7. Thanks for that. I have found a couple of old posts, tried the WD40 trick and no joy, but i'm still not exactly sure on whether you can just disconnect the motor on one side (and how), or whether I should just remove the relevant fuse. The handbook tells me which corresponding fuse it is and that it is for 'right hand lower light and adjuster', not the main beam. Does this mean i'll be sacrificing the side light on one side just for some peace and quiet ?? Was hoping I could just unplug a wire or connection somewhere for now, before it goes for service in a couple of weeks. Thanks in advance again
  8. Evening all, After being hit by a dozy driver this morning my front bumper has been pushed back, across and up slightly. The indicator has come loose and popped out (easy replacement and fix from what I can see), but the offside headlight has also been forced up by a tiny amount, just enough for the levelling motor to be completely confused and decide it needs to be on all of the time. It seems to be stuck on the drivers side as the other side moves up and down ok if you move the adjuster switch in the car, but no amount of adjustment will get it to stop. So my question is - is there any way you can disable the motor so that it's not whining all the time ? Not sure if just pulling a fuse will do it, or whether the motor unit itself can be easily disconnected for now? The light still seems to be alligned ok, just trying to stop the motor from burning itself out. Thanks in advance.
  9. In a village called Whitley, just off junc 34 of the M62. The A19 runs right through the middle so you probably know it. Now give us a bit of 'Oh Miss Jones'
  10. I live between Selby and Doncaster, but work in York so will keep an eye out for you. Have'nt seen anyone really since signing up on here though, does everybody hide when they see the red peril coming down the road
  11. We got our Oct Mk1 vRS from here about 3 weeks ago. Very prompt and friendly replies to my initial email enquiries from Martyn himself lead me to booking a test drive a few days later. Dealt with Paul Baker and would have to agree with njd earlier that he is very friendly, knowledgeable and helpful. With a bit of sarcastic banter thrown in by Alan the sales manager the whole sales process was very enjoyable (as it should be). 20 mile plus test drive, choosing my own route round the bendy b roads was a first in my test drive history, plus SWMBO got a drive as well. Finally, very reasonable negotiation (& realistic on both parties - the fezza was newer, had less miles, and is cheaper to tax, insure etc) on the part ex value and the without-prompt offer of most of the cost of 6 months tax and the 7 day complimentary insurance plan meant i dealt on the day. After meeting Martyn in person (as he likes to do) I drove away a few days later. So far so very good (I know Martyn checks this personally so - keep up the good work mate !) Have not been back since for servicing, parts etc, so will update at a later date .
  12. Would it be possible to pop along to see what its all about. Never actually witnessed a rolling road session and i'm quite interested to see what goes on. Don't really think it'll be worth me having a go, as the cars standard it'll only be depressing to see what its lost over the years ! Unless there's a diagnostic benefit that could highlight any potential problems ? Would there still be a charge for spectating or does that just apply to getting on the rollers ? Plus I have a friend with an Impreza WRX who may be interested in having a go but he isnt a member of the forum, are 'wildcards' allowed or is it just forum members ? Cheers.
  13. Thanks for the warm welcome everyone. Just a warning, our Octy has an evil twin around the York area, so if you think you've spotted us and the driver doesnt wave back it might not be us (as he didnt wave back at me a couple of days ago!) :( And as for people in Selby having no taste...... you obviously know the town very well. Tracksuit bottoms tucked into socks anyone ??
  14. Just to say keep an eye out for me or the wife in our new {well to us anyway} Red Octy mk1 vRS. Patrolling round York, Donny, Ponte, Leeds etc. Looking forward to being 'spotted'
