  1. Cheers guys. Signed up for the myturbodiesel site - looks very useful. Will definitely be giving it a go - determined to try my hand at anything.
  2. Another quick question - some of the guides ive seen refer to bracing the engine with a support bar and undoing the mount bolts and raising up the engine itself. Other guides seem to miss this out altogether and look much simpler. Is the bracing/undoing/hoisting thing necessary or can you just work away on the engine from the bay itself? This guy seems to make it look very easy on a jetta (same engine i think) -
  3. Thanks everyone, thats been really helpful. I think ill give it a go. There has to be a first time for everything! Cheers!
  4. Ingus - do you know of any good guides for the fitting process? Is it something than can be done on a pair of small ramps in a garage/driveway?
  5. Hi Phil, Id say im reasonably competent - I can figure out most things. I have done a variety of jobs to my car and the wifes including oil services, pads and discs, towbar fitting, cruise control and CCU upgrades, airbag wiring repair etc. Have you done the timing belt change yourself? Any major gotchas?
  6. Sorry, forgot the engine! - 1.9 PD TDI I havent done any cambelt work before at all I dont have any specialist cambelt tools but am willing to buy some if needed
  7. I have an 06 Octavia 2 Classic which has been a great little car for me - now up to 141k miles with no major hassle at all. I usually do all my own regular servicing and have a VAG COM for any programming/diagnostics. I have used ERWIN in the past for access to workshop manuals etc. From memory, the first timing belt change was done at about 60k miles by the main dealer, so is now well overdue a second one. I would prefer to give this a go myself if possible. Do you think im nuts? Is it something a home mechanic can realistically do? Should I just bite the bullet and trust it to the main dealer again?
  8. Cheers Eddie, fitted a length of mini coax cable and ran it round behind the door rubber. Worked perfectly, range is much much better! Thanks for all the help getting this done, great to have remote locking sorted with original parts, despite the local main dealer insisting it was impossible without using a 3rd party aftermarket kit.
  9. Good stuff, should be able to source some of that locally. Is there a particular length it has to be (like a wifi lead)? Do you just run the loose end up the pillar trim or does it need to be grounded to the car?
  10. Fitted the new CCU just now and was able to code the new key in just fine. I transferred over the immo chip from my spare key so no issues there. Range isnt wonderful, i need to be standing at the car for the remote to work. There was mention of a wire I could add to improve reception. Just wondering, how do I go about doing this? Is there a particular part number etc?
  11. Guys, thanks again, thats been really helpful. CCU and key should be delivered in a few days so I will give it a whirl!
  12. Eddie - Thanks for such a prompt reply! thats great news! I didn't fancy going over the barrel of my main dealer to get pin codes etc as I am sure they would charge handsomely for it. I take it I can use VCDS to copy over the coding from my current CCU (01D002003F098505095B010004CC) and just change the parts that refer to remote central locking? The fact that its a second hand CCU wont affect things? Also, am I right in thinking the CCU has the remote control receiver built into it, i.e. I don't need any more parts for the job apart from the CCU and compatible remote?
  13. Hi folks, I have a 2006 Octavia Classic (1.9) which was the model with no remote central locking. I have done some of my own work to the car, including a cruise control and steering controller upgrade which went well and I also have a VCDS unit from RossTech for the coding etc. For my next project, I want to upgrade the car to OEM remote centrol locking by replacing the non-remote CCU in my car with a remote capable one. I have already tracked down and purchased a second hand (from a Seat Leon) 1K0 959 433 AK to replace the 1K0 959 433 AH in my car. I have also purchased a blank 1K0 959 753 G 434 MHZ OEM key which I believe is compatible with the CCU. I assumed I would be able to do all the work and figure out the coding etc with the VCDS but as I have googled harder, it doesn't look that straightforward. It seems I may need a immo PIN for my car and ALSO might need the immo PIN from the donor Seat Leon to make this work. I was also thinking I could just remove the immo chip from one of my current non-remote keys and transfer it to the new remote key to get round immo issues but will this still not work unless I had the immo PIN of the old Leon? Can someone tell me if that is the case? Am I going to be screwed once I start this work, unless I go to the local main dealer and pay out for coding? Really hope someone can put me on the right track before I start the work and end up stranded with no keys working!
  14. Thanks very much for the info! There was no service schedule in the handbook folder (nearly new used car), I should probably get in touch with the dealer to see if they can print off a copy. Hope the finger is doing better!
  15. Hi, I have a 2006 Octavia 1.9 TDI and its coming up on 54k miles. The service indicator has been coming up since about 51k and I have been putting off going to the skoda dealer for service, mixture of cost and time to arrange lift etc. I have changed oil and filters etc on my previous cars and now this one is out of its warranty period, I am happy enough to go ahead and work on my Octavia. Ive read the 60k mark is a big service interval, needing a belt change so will definitely have the garage do that but Id like to go ahead and do this one on my own. What would I need to do now, apart from change oil and oil filter? I dont have a service schedule for this car so would appreciate if anyone could give me information on whats required for this mileage.
