  1. I am the proud owner of a 2002 4x4 Kombi Turbo. Done 113K and getting to the point where the front suspension is generally worn. Basically the following are all in need of replacement in the next couple of years: -- ARB Bushes -- ARB Linkage (had to replace one to get through new MOT regs. on perished gaiters/covers) -- Top Mounts (Advisory on MOT) -- One front and one rear shock are getting a bit sluggish. Should I replace the worn parts as the fail with standard VAG parts, or upgrade to something better? I have been reasoning that upgrading may save me money in the long run because; a. Due to the increased ride height of the 4x4 (and cornering too fast) I have to replace my tyres far too often due to them wearing only on the outer edges. Lowering the car should aleviate this a little by lowering the centre of gravity. b. As a DIY mechanic the VAG parts are expensive. I have a bunch of questions as follows: Does anyone do any cheap coilovers for the 4x4 kombi? If so are they worth it? (Have seen Jamex/SPAX on fleabay ~£400-500 was looking cheaper than that.) Would standard shocks with lowering springs be better? Does anyone have a list of what parts should be replaced along with the main items, i.e. bushings, bolts, clamps etc. and/or which will give me the most benefit for my buck? I am a pretty proficient DIY mechanic being a Mechanical Engineer, but this would be my first foray into major suspension work. What tools would be a must/recommended? What should I watch out for? Are there any good guides anyone can recommend? All comments and suggestions will be much appreciated.
  2. Sometimes you can't win even if you take exra care and do it properly. Used quality trolley javk and axle stands with 4" 2"x4" wooden blocks at all 4 jacking points. Finished work lowered car carefully and noticed I had split the sill at the jacking point! Octy 4x4 turbo
