I am a retired (but working hard) former managment consultant, in my 60s.  I am hands on building my retirement house in a beautiful location overlooking bushland, south of Port Macquarie on the mid north coast of NSW (about 430kms north of Sydney). I only use trades where required legally or on jobs too big and complex eg craning on the large roof panels or large steel beams I knew nothing about building until I started.  But I watched too many Grand Designs programs and foolishly thought I could do the same thing.  Ha!  But I have learnt so much from two key people who have laboured for me but know much more than the title suggests.  The house is a large 4br contemporary built to fit into the environment and very temperate climate, plus I am already in the adjacent 2br flat in similar style.  There is a large separate shed and the block is about 1.5 acres.  It is a big project but I love a challenge.  I will finish the build in about 6mths.  If you want to look at my house build blog see https://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=38&t=91263&p=1887477#p1887477

Then I can enjoy my new home.  And restore my XJS Jaguar and my XJ6.  And I also have a beautiful restored XJ6 - I am a glutton for punishment. Plus a Touareg for towing and a camper trailer that travels behind for outback travel which I love.  I maintain and fix my cars myself as much as possible.
