  1. Went with the 115. It drove better than the 95 and thought it was the better car, mechanically at least I'd also add that, bizarrely, the 115 actually proved cheaper to insure than the 95 despite the slightly higher power output. Perhaps the fact that it's also a year older than the 95 we were looking at accounts for that but still. Not complaining!
  2. Well I took your advice and read all the t's and c's, including exclusions across the different products and decided they were practically worthless so cancelled them. The way they were sold (complete peace of mind, simply call a number and everything will be taken care of etc) compared to how they would actually work in practice (having to pay out for any damage in the first place to then reclaim the cost later in some cases and even then, the full cost may not necessarily be re-imbursed) were two different things. I also wanted my child to have some responsibility at least for taking care of the car so there was that added consideration.
  3. Slightly odd this one but tonite I noticed the end bit of the driver's side door mirror repeater missing. Whilst I'm sure this was missing when we got the car, I only noticed its absence when driving it today as I could see the repeater flashing on the left mirror but not the right, now I know why! It looks like an inexpensive part to source and sort myself without hassling the dealer about it but I cannot find the part anywhere, only the entire repeater assembly which I don't need. Can anyone point me in the right direction (no pun intended!!) please?
  4. That's why I'm not usually a fan of these money-making add-ons as the cost to repair or even replace a tyre often outweighs the cost of the insurance but alloys I'm not too sure what that costs these days if they get scuffed or worse. I can take it or leave it either way but the manager was upfront and said that if I chose not accept them then he couldn't offer the £200 or so extra discount. Discount on the car price would be somewhere around £250-£300 in that case as opposed to £500. I'm used to haggling £1000s off a new car but used cars seem to get very little?
  5. Thanks for the replies and yes you have a point Aldfort, I keep having to remind myself that this will be a first car and all the scrapes that are likely to go with it! Insurance as I say is very similar for both cars and even the sticker price on the cheaper 2019 car is only about £500 difference so they're very much on a par in that regard. On that basis then it sounds like the cheaper car that's not as cosmetically nice but with the better engine and gearbox is the one to go for. I'm not normally a fan of the add-ons either (except for GAP which is £150) and said no to them but the dealer has basically offered a further £200 discount to take the alloy (about £230) and tyre insurance (about £150) which means they're costing about £180 for both for 3 years cover. Considering it's a first car and all then I didn't think that was bad? Only extras will be front and rear dashcams (£299 fitted) and a set of mudflaps (£165)
  6. The 115 definitely felt more driveable and had a bit more 'go', especially at higher speeds without being in any danger of what you'd call a licence loser. The difference in the insurance premium is small so that isn't a factor. Cosmetic condition aside, the 115 felt more suitable for motorway driving with its 6th gear as it seemed to hang around the 2100/2200 rpm mark at 70 as opposed to nearly 3000 rpm on the 95. Both cars seemed comparable on 30 and 40 roads with the 95 appearing to have taller gearing making the engine have to work harder to get up to speed. At the moment we're just having to trust that the dealer will deliver on their promise that the 115 car will come up well after prep, especially the roof situation as I do believe it's the right engine and gearbox combo to go for. I suppose I'm just covering our options in case it doesn't!
  7. Afternoon all, It's been quite some time since I last posted in these forums and I'm hoping for some level-headed advice here as this will be a first car for my 17-year old and I've never bought used before (I appreciate how privileged that sounds!) After much hunting around, we've set on a Scala as it provides the right mix of practicality, features and believe it or not, looks. Being on a relatively tight budget we've found a 2020 Scala SE 1.0 TSI 95 which we've test driven and were pretty happy with it on the test drive but in the meantime, we've since found a 2019 Scala SE 1.0 TSI 115 (NOT the 110) which seem to be relatively rare these days. Both cars are identical except for the colour, engine and gearbox but the 2020 car with the 95 engine is in better condition cosmetically than the 2019 car with the 115 engine but I've been reassured by the dealer that the 2019 car will be brought up to standard (as well as can be for a car its age at least!) The biggest problem with the 2019 car is I noticed that the roof was dented in a couple of places (caused by the dealer's technician apparently) but the dealer has assured me that it won't be a problem and that it'll be sorted. Having agonised over which car to go for, bearing in mind our decision will be influenced by how well the 2019 car looks after it's been through prep, my question is really about whether the 115 engine and gearbox combo is worth holding out for (I test drove it and whilst it doesn't set the world on fire, there was an appreciable difference in power, especially at higher speeds) over the 95 engine with its 5 speed gearbox? I ask this because if the 2019 car doesn't come up to expectations then it'll be a case of walking away and probably going for the 2020 car instead. That said, the car will mainly be used by my 17-year old and will be making a 180 mile or so trip home every few weeks once uni starts next year but otherwise it'll be a mix of both town and motorway driving but it's for this reason we don't know what to do! Thanks in advance for any advice.
