  1. time for my 2c worth.......an area which is HUGE in the US at the moment post Enron etc is corporate governance. This is also increasing in the EU / UK with new leiglsation and will continue to increase. So, anything related to auditing (either accounting or IT / systems related) is a good area to be in just now. I have heard stories of £500/day being available.... So, anything which gives you a good business grounding with some accounting knowledge would give you these options, and if you have a combination of this and IT skills (not even very techy) that is a good combination. We (big 4 accounting firm) see a lot of clients who have techies and accountants / auditors / risk people but few with a combination of business and IT skills.... not sure how much help that was. If you want to see how much is going on just now - do a search on jobs for Sarbanes-Oxley - particularly in the US - this is just going to get bigger from now on here.
  2. Had a few problems posting this - hope it works... the view from Bunnahabhain distillery across to the Paps of Jura. Not a bad view!
  3. Well, instead of a day of DIY (painting, putting up lining paper etc) I decided that since SWMBO is off to NY with work, a far better idea was to drop by a bodyshop to take a look at the couple of rust bubbles on the sills and have a crack at installing my MP3 player in the MX5 (doesn't have a multiplayer like the vRS). Get quoted
  4. Had a play on a few demo bikes at demo days down at Glentress (nr peebles -go there, you'll love it) - tried an Orange 5 and Kona Coiler - both were surprisingly lighter than I expected (my hardtail is a fairly lightweight Norco) but the difference the decent fork / rear sus made for downhill jaunts (not serious DH) was unbelievable! the sight of a geordie guy who was aged 50+ trying to lug an Orange 223 full on world cup DH bike up a slight incline was v amusing - but I couldn't get anywhere near him back down again!! Who says it's a kids sport! There's hope for us all yet
  5. what are you planning on doing on it? single track? odd DH runs? Have a look at importing from Canada - I rented a couple of bikes over there in the summer and met a guy who was buying a $3k bike - even with shipping to the UK it was cheaper than buying here because of the exchange rate to the canadian dollar!!

  7. I seriously thought an XJ6 for a while as a second car - but the potential costs of something going wrong along with the above comment swayed me - to an MX5 - - try small B roads - part of my daily commute
  8. inflate the tyres with Helium? Sorry, couldn't resist. On a more serious note though - how much of a performance difference does having the typical stuff you have in your car make on a day to day basis? (i.e. one passenger, couple of shopping bags).
  9. Can anyone recommend a good bodyshop in the Edinburgh / Fife area? I have recently acquired a P-reg Mx5 Harvard which is in pretty good nick, although it has a couple of very small rust patches starting to show under the paint. I'd like to get them seen to before the winter and before they get any worse. Any ideas? Thanks Ross
  10. Interesting - my Octy vRS used to creak quite a lot - which annoyed the **** out of me. But now I think about it I don't remember the last time it did that - so I guess it's solved itself - I certainly haven't done anything about it....not that this helps you really..
  11. what do you mean green? mine are a dusty black....

shame it wasn't a TVR - could have the furby driver saying "need a tow?"

  14. some interesting comments there - one more for y'all... we are going to be moving out of the city into the country where we'll really need 2 cars (damn, wish I hadn't sold that Rover 220D 6 months ago - D'OH!) anyway, I'm considering options for a second car. It's likely to be me driving it most (despite the RS being officially my company car) as SWMBO will do a longer commute. Anyway, thinking about: 1 - oldish MX5 (preferably UK spec - but could be too dear) - reliable and fun to drive 2 - similiarly aged "performance" car - Nissan 200SX, Mk1 Golf GTI or something along those lines.... 3 - something for
