  1. Thanks matey, I would love to take you up on the offer but I'm in North London, will see how it goes. I might just do it :P Gotta figure out what to replace to fix the brakes.
  2. I haven't had the fault codes read. Was kinda hoping to avoid it if someone could just point out what it is from symptoms, last time I had guy plug his tool in my car it cost me £40 and no happy ending to my woes! I have cleaned the disks (both disk and pad are pagid) both times before putting them on, copper grease on moving parts, clean hands, the works. If it was a bearing I would hear something too wouldn't I? I jacked up the car and could not wobble the wheel in any way. When I drive there is a slight wobble and I can hear the pads squeeking on the disk. My neighbour suggested it could be the caliper that is just too caked with brake dusk and is not moving freely, however, after cleaning it thoroughly and knocking the brake dust off it didn't help. Maybe I need a new caliper? I really don't want to keep spending money on the car and it not getting better but perhaps I should get the sensor replaced... might be cheaper than buying another car.
  3. Hi Forum! Not posted for a while. I still have my 2001 Fabia MPi and have now had it for 6 years and it has 100,500 miles on the clock! So hurray for my Skoda living so long despite the occasionally hard life it had. That being said I am coming up to my MOT again and there are a few issues that are getting to be very annoying... My power steering stopped working about 6 months ago, the pump does not turn on at all and the warning light keeps blinking. Also the airbag light has come on about a month ago. A bit annoying now particularly when parking. I really don't want to spend much money on fixing up the car because I only plan to have it until Xmas or so. My question is, can I remove the power steering pump and just bypass it, so when I turn the steering wheel I am only moving the wheels and not the fluid inside against the pump or will this make no difference? Secondly, I replaced my brakes (pads and disks) about 4-5 months ago because the old ones were in a terrible state and after a while I got a progressively heavy wobble upon braking. So I thought - warped disks and changed them again and now the same thing is happening. It's happening on the driver side and when the brakes are not applied there is a periodic squeek proportional to the car speed. What is the likely cause? Do I need to replace the whole hub? Cheers for any advice guys and yay for a still working Skoda!
  4. Bought some brake pads from MattH! Awesome stuff, fast delivery, really happy Thanks MattH!
  5. OK, so, it's been about 100 miles and these are the problems: Still slight squeak noise from brakes after about 5 miles (maybe as disk warms up and pads are still wearing in after being taken off and remounted etc) but the worrying thing is the appreciable grinding noise or more of a dull thud thud thud as I am cornering to the right. Any ideas?
  6. Update: I have taken the calipers off, knocked off all the brake dust crust (took about 4 hours total), cleaned up everything, greased it all up with copper grease, put everything back, bled the brakes (new brake fluid yay). Should have done that right from the start - lesson learnt: don't cut corners! Took it for a drive and there are no noises, no vibrations and brakes work great.... Will let you know if it is fixed for sure after I do a couple hundred miles in it! Thanks guys! V.
  7. Of course, I am so stupid >.< I didn't have any so I just put normal grease on the back and it must have disappeared after some braking so I started getting these problems. I will buy some tomorrow, re-grease the lot and report back! Feel like a right plonker now -.- Thanks guys
  8. Hi guys! On my 1.4MPi, I changed the disks and pads before my MOT and although I never had braking problems I did find the disk worn badly and the pads were almost gone too. So, new pads and new disks, everything was going great then maybe after 100 or so miles I started hearing my brakes going squeak squeak squeak (it has the sound of as if the wheel goes round and one part of it rubs against the pad). The sound of course vanishes on light braking (but the steering wheel wobbles a bit under light braking). Any ideas????? UNRELATED: I Just replaced the head gasket on my MPi. Took 2 days and it was a fairly straightforward job (I <3 my little car now lol) done 1200 miles on it since and no water leaks, oil top notch, no sounds from engine, I thought I did a pretty good job lol. I drained almost 800ml of water from the oil sump! Anyway, if I could sort that braking problem out then I would have one working car Thanks for any and all help!!!!!!! V.
  9. I appreciate any and all help and suggestion and hope you can help, I want my car to live two more years :P
  10. Hi guys. I have a slight problem with my MK1 1.4MPi. I replaced my water pump 2 months ago and then I noticed that I lose water the last 2 weeks (I go from max to half inch below min line on expansion tank every 100 miles). First thing I checked was the water pump but no leaks from gasket or pipe. In doing this I decided to take that plastic engine cover off for unrelated reasons... Took the oil cap off aaaand mayo, lots of it. It was not there when I changed the pump. What I did: Checked dipstick and it was fine - the oil was thick enough. Took rocker cover off and the mayo has thinly coated the top of it but the rockers are cvered with oil coat as normal with only the area around te cap covered in mayo. There is no oil in expansion tank. I put the cover back on etc and ran the engine on tick over and got it got enough to make sure no air in water system (some bubbles came out then when the fan switched on I topped up to max mark and put the cover back on and turned the engine off). As it was cooling it started making a tssss sound from the expansion tank overflow bit but no steam coming out and the water level dropped to about half inch under min mark in 5mins. No engine and surrounds were bone dry. Can anyone make any sense of this? The car done 40k in 5 years that I had it. Only replaced fluids and filters and brakes.. and the pump lol.
  11. Hi Matt, Is this on the 1.4 MPI? Sounds like the steering pump, is the power steering light on? I had this problem for 100 miles then it somehow sorted it self out and I have not had it again for 3 years now.
  12. Hi guys, I need to do a little repair on a red skoda fabia 2001. It says the colour is 'rally red' and may have the paint code 7272 but not sure where I pulled that from. Can anyone give me a hint as to where I can get a matching spray can of paint from? Cheers
  13. I actually managed to find a crane, now I just need an engine stand
  14. Hi guys, I recently bought a car for peanuts to get some practice overhauling an engine. It's a 1.3L petrol. The problem is - it's still in the car. I am looking to get a jack and a stand for the engine. Trouble is I don't want to spend £200+ on them because I doubt I will do that much 'overhauling' afterwards. Are there ways of renting them for not much money? Does anyone have one I can borrow off them? (I am on Jncn 22 of M25) Any advice is really appreciated. Thanks!
