  1. Just less than 3 miles each way to work for me - I cycle it every day, no point in driving that short a distance (it will only be 1 mile each way once I have finalised my house purchase) Given up using the car now, I cycle round Bristol - its so much quicker in rush hour. Its a good feeling to fly past stationary traffic doing close to 20mph on a bicycle
  2. Couldn't agree more - he acts like some jumped up ch4v tw@ How he wasn't beaten senseless I will never know :thumbdwn:
  3. If you are looking for a good, solid commuter bike for a reasonable price then I would recommend a Ridgeback hybrid I have a Ridgeback Velocity which I purchased about a year ago for £300 and have so far ridden around 2500 miles on it (including a 112 mile ride from Bristol to London) in relative comfort. Only thing that has needed replacing is the brake pads (I go through these at an alarming rate - big stops from 25+ mph tends to have this effect I guess ) Ridgeback hybrids Once you buy the bike remember to budget for a lock (or two), waterproof high-vis jacket, lights, tool kit etc (the 'other' expenses have so far cost me about £200 in total) Hope this helps
  4. ... I was out rowing on the river both Saturday and Sunday Probably spent a good 4 hours in the boat over those 2 days getting in some good training for next weekends race
  5. Wire your car up to the mains electricity supply - that should sort them out good and proper Might be slightly illegal but ...
  6. It would depend on what they want to measure - on an aircraft wing for example they would be interested with the pressure distribution over the wing surfaces so they would use a number of pressure transducers to map this out. For flow visualisation they often use smoke to show what the flow is doing further away from the model under test. One of the main problems with wind tunnels is getting the correct conditions to simulate what would happen in reality - for instance you cannot test a full scale aircraft wing (unless you have a 40m+ diameter wind tunnel ) so you have to scale the conditions to suit (speed, Reynolds number etc which incidently is why some wind tunnels are pressurised e.g. the 5m wind tunnel at QinetiQ inFarnborough) CFD simulations are more cost effective but the model used needs to be validated (you can't just blindly believe what the computer tells you - the big picture is likely to be correct but when it comes down to predicting eddy currents the computing capacity is just not high enough, unless you can wait a few hundred years for your results - hence the need to perform some wind tunnel tests)
  7. I've been mistaken for the law in my Octy when driving on the motorway, especially when trying to save fuel by going at 65mph or so. The number of cars that hesitate for long periods (I'm talking 30 seconds plus) before tentatively accelerating past is very amusing. I tend to agree with yashicamat about the awful standard of driving that leads most people to think that anyone indicating correctly, observing proper lane discipline etc is an undercover police officer. Keeps me amused on long journeys anyway The illusion of being an undercover officer is shattered when I floor it and accelerate past them to warp speed though
  8. Another vote for a classic 911 If money will not stretch that far - how about a 944 turbo
  9. Especially with a beefed up rear ARB I've had fun scaring mates with a bit of lift off oversteer

    Taxi 4

Fair enough - might have to look out for it on DVD

    Taxi 4

I didn't even realise they had made Taxi 3 Good car chases in Taxi 1 & 2
  12. In simple terms: Understeer = crashing forwards i.e. front end loses grip and 'pushes wide' Oversteer = crashing in reverse :P i.e. back end loses grip and tries to overtake the front end Almost all modern cars are set up to understeer as it is considered safer than oversteer
  13. I will do what I can to move out of the way but would not cross the stop line. I almost always stop 2 - 3 feet short of the line anyway so I would have a small amount of room to play with which should allow me to get out of the way if the situation required it
  14. I will look out for it at the cinema
  15. Is this film for real? If so, it could be hugely entertaining
  16. MFD = multi-function display i.e. Skoda factory fit satnav
  17. The houses of parliament = loonies far up the Thames
  18. I've now had my offer on the house accepted Very happy but a bit apprehensive about all the money I will be paying out before I can move in (survey, valuation, conveyancing, stamp duty, mortgage set up costs etc - I estimate all that will cost aroud £4k  ) Feeling nervous but excited about the whole thing
  19. I've overtaken police cars at an indicated 80mph with no problems I have also joined a motorway and immediately proceeded to overtake a few cars at an indicated 90+ when a patrol car pulls out a few cars back (it was obscured when I joined the motorway) - my first thought was something along the lines of "oh bu99er I'm going to get pulled over" so I eased off the accelerator, finished the overtake, indicated left and pulled across to the inside lane, cruise control set for 70mph all the while expecting the patrol car's lights to start flashing and me being told to pull over. Luckily the officer must have used his judgement as I was not stopped but he did follow behind me for a good 5 miles watching my every move (I moderated my driving accordingly so he did not have any excuse to pull me over) Lucky escape methinks
  20. I've just put an offer in on a house so I have all that to look forward to Scary / exciting times ahead
