  1. Those were in budget...7-8k, the proceeds from sale of the Nissan. I know it won't be perfect, but the level of neglect was shocking.
  2. I would prefer the 2.0, but the two I've looked at today were somewhat leggy and big red flags...131k, never had the cambelt and pump changed, rust blemishes bubbling under lower door paintwork and odd roof dents.
  3. @toot not a JDM 4x4. Nissan Elgrand. Got a good supplier, but have to text to request parts, wait for a price, then down to postage, so usually a 3-4 day turnaround. Fine for service parts, but if something major goes and it's off-road, things snowball...2nd car needed elsewhere, so I can't get to work and it goes on. So something where parts are quite a bit easier to come by looks pretty attractive.
  4. This. Had a look at a 2014 Greenline. Nice car. Shame about the recurring advisories of rear suspension arms being corroded and shocks misted with oil. Shame, as it was a good price for an 80k motor. Next up..2015 2.0 TDI with 130k for 8k...🤔
  5. Nope, it didn't. Got rid before that. I hear what you're saying, but had to be an improvement on an 18 year old jap import that takes a week to get parts for😂
  6. Without getting too involved at this stage, assuming the correct bolt and offset, and not altering the rolling circumference massively, I could look at a change of wheel/tyre down the line. Prett sure it wouldn't be the last vehicle I buy...😁
  7. I don't NEED it, and I guess there's a small degree of additional transmission loss with the 4x4 when it gets going (doesn't the Hakdex usually drive just 2wd? It's not a full blown permanent system) Some have remarked on here about the Greenline being a touch "crashy" on its ride.... And given the state of roads aren't going to improve anytime soon.... I accept it won't be damped like a BMW 5 series....my experience of cars the last seven years has been Volvo XC70, XC90 and a Nissan Elgrand, so not exactly mid size European hatchbacks.....🤨
  8. Come to the right place then.....😂
  9. Could someone please provide a real world assessment of a yeti with these two different engine/drivetrain? I had the 1.6 in a a Golf with the DSG box. Perfectly adequate. Good on fuel. I'm assuming the Greenline would be comparable to that. I'm trying to avoid complications in the next car purchase, so a although the toys on the higher spec 4x4 are nice, that and the 4x4 is just now to go wrong. Coming from 3.5 V6 RWD Funbus with more toys than Hamlyns will take some getting used to though. Thoughts welcomed. 1.6 TDI Greenline 2014, 80k 2.0 TDI 4x4 SE L 2015 but with 132k....makes me nervous...😁
  10. Well, it's been a while.... However, I find myself contemplating a 2015 2.0 Yeti. Better on fuel than a 2005 reg, 3.5 V6 petrol JDM bus. Higher ride and therefore less likely to break something on UK roads😔 Watch out for stupid questions in the Yeti section....😁
  11. Not a film, but the first season of a series.. Star Trek Discovery. Some shocking/ unexpected twists in there.
  12. I'm back, baby! I've changed cars three times since I was last involved here (Honda CR-V to Volvo XC70, to Kia Sportage, to Volvo XC90) had two mental breakdowns and two kids ( possibly linked!!) However, now I'm stuck indoors, and only just beginning to consider working from home if I.T get their act together) I thought I would reignite some old acquaintances, with Briskoda being the safest of the available options!
  13. Was a bit of a rubbish day this side. Boss set a random target of 8 cases each.... computers then decided to run slow. Parents rang up to say their mac has broken.... read dad has installed something random and of questionable provenance in a total internet click fest. Then he boss calls me in to tell me I don't qualify for the company paternity scheme which kicks in after 26 weeks..... because I will have worked there for 25 weeks and five days. The two days barring me are Saturday and Sunday, which the office is shut. But the law is the law.
  14. I had no idea. Such a shame. I found him a good chap on here and by the accounts of others, he was good in real life too. I recall having some dealings with him a long time back and he was so helpful. Of course, as a Briskodian, he would be. Sincerest condolences to his family. He will be missed here too, but no comparison.
  15. Sorry, my mistake or not being terribly thorough in my comments. The FUD element will exist until the manufacturers are clear on replacement battery costs. Regardless of life span, it's a question that consumers new to the tech will ask. If the professional representative of the car maker can't give you a clear answer, it's a bit poor, and does nothing to dispel the uncertainty that's been put out there by the naysayers and big oil.....(oooh, conspiracy theorist fodder Class 101). Lease deals do sound great....if you've got the money to spend and want to be on that wheel. Whenever I've looked into it, the whole thing is predicated on having a few grand to put down as a deposit first, then walk away or restart in three years time. My preference is to have ownership of the vehicle from day one.. Yes, I know depreciation and running costs etc all affect the actual cost to my wallet. Maybe I'm coming at it all backwards, and I don't mind if anyone wishes to correct me, but in all my years of car ownership, I've not spent £3K per year for three years, on servicing, maintenance, insurance and tax or depreciation losses and had nothing to show for it at the end. It's a state of mind. I'd still have insurance and servicing/maintenance on a Leaf or any EV as well, and those costs are largely comparable (servicing being the only difference, at around 50% from the figures I'd been given). If i had one, I'd have a home charger and top it up a bit every week, but I do take your point on he charging cycle management aspect being counterintuitive to newcomers. I expressed it purely in those terms, as many, including myself initially, only see the headline figures and work on 'old' thinking. Still, £300 a month is a lot the I don't have spare to drop on a car. And i think that's probably the root issue for many people. The economics of leasing don't really work for me, but may suit others circumstances and wants better. I just need a car that has sufficient space for the family, doesn't drink like a fish or breakdown like a z-list celeb on daytime TV. But I'd still sell my own grandmother for a Model S 90D :D
  16. If initial purchase price/replacement battery costs were not an issue, I'd be very seriously looking at a leaf for my daily driver - 4 miles each way commute, 20-30mph inner town driving, it would be perfect. I reckon I could get away with charging it every 3-4 weeks, even running A/C, stereo and lights, and using the app to pre-warm/cool the car every day. But the initial purchase cost is still frightening, and last time I checked, Nissan UK still weren't being terribly clear on replacement battery costs (though figures of 5K were suggested, every 5 years to maintain range). That makes no financial sense at all, because spending big money on a car, I fully expect it to not need a new engine every five years to keep it able to do 100+ miles between fill ups. Sticking wth Dr Diesels evil invention here for the foreseeable future (and an old Audi diesel engine at that!)
  17. I know the question Over the actual value of boiler service contracts has been asked on here before, but living by the coast, and a new baby due in the spring, and reduced finances, I can't quite make the case for not having one - at the rate paid for cover, it would take 5 years to afford a new boiler. If it breaks in that time....I could incur the wrath of SWMBO. So the question is... discount British Gas, as they are gouging me on renewal, despite the week of call outs and parts being changed due to lack of knowledge or proper investigations..... who would or do, you use? Also, any professional views on costs or replacing old radiators (1 x500 by 600 round top, 21200x600 round top, and possibly another of the same) with high output new ones. plus some remedial brick work and plastering, as one is bolted straight to the structural breeze block and is open for drafts, so off to a poor start as a heating device), drain and repressurise with inhibitor.
  18. Don't do it ourselves, but next door do.....they live like hermits, windows and curtains closed 24/7, never come out of their house or car when anyone is around.... but today, they have been spotted. And it also means the argument between father and grown up son just start at a different hour (a burst at 10am this morning and started again 30 mins ago....which is sort of an improvement from the norm, being woken at 2am when they normally kick off for some reason)
  19. So this week SWMBO and I are in the hospital for the 20 week scan of El Bambino. Last time we were there, we paid the fee for pictures, and got really crummy ones. So we dutifully paid again this time, hoping for better results, but though, what the heck, we'll ask about videoing the screen ; the midwife was more than happy to let us do so at the scans for heartbeat etc. The sonographer gave me such a dirty look and pointed to signs saying that due to data protection and some other legislation additional photography or filming was banned. I've got some basic familiarity with the DPA professionally, and I really couldn't see any grounds for prohibiting filming or photography of the screen with your baby on it. Unless it's some swivel eyed loonie that's successfully argued it's an infringement of the baby rights as they are incapable of giving consent. Or could it be that the NHS Trust responsible is trying to hide behind legislation, inappropriately, to cover themselves so footage from parents that shows a missed anomaly isn't used against them in some imaginary future legal action? Cynical? Moi? If anyone can explain rationally why such a stance is being taken, please enlighten me...
  20. 2008, Executive. I know Honda parts aren't cheap, but then neither are VAG parts, so swings and roundabouts. Servicing.... I use a third party who used to run and service a fleet of HGVs for haulage. Quite reasonable and very knowledgable with all diesels.
  21. Quick update: Bought the 2.2 Diesel. Manual, which is a shame, as I've gotten quite lazy.... 1000 miles in and what does the jury make of it..... Round town/commute i'm getting 33mpg. Hit 49mpg on a half loaded jaunt to Wales last week. So, Fuel....more expensive. Road tax. More expensive. Insurance. More expensive. No DPF to go wrong though. Plenty of room and comfort. Lots of lovely toys....just a shame the sat nav head unit is ancient, the hands free is dimwitted and Honda really over complicated it by giving it voice activated controls for everything it seems.....I had quite a lot of fun as the previous owner had it set for German. The head unit and hands free situation is rectifiable at a cost, so just making do until i have a lottery win. Stil, mechanically it will hopefully be robust. It gets up to temp about 3 miles in to my commute too, so thats a bonus. it doesn't have the usual diesel shove when accelerating, so it's a slightly odd sensation watching the speed and revs climb smoothly, with minimal fuss or drama. Some irk in a van kindly relieved my of my wing mirror at speed, and I had a to choke on the cost of an official replacement...£290 fitted..... a plain plastic one off eBay, not painted. £59 and £48 to fit. I didn't want totackley it myself as the door cards are secured with half a dozen hidden screws and I'm not the most DI competent.... :notme:
  22. Don't worry too much, between the fuel bill and repairs, money won't be burning that hole for long. We've had to go for something bigger due to expanding family and my equally expanding waistline, and it's amazing how doing so empties the wallet exponentially.
  23. Let's start with the immediate things : Cambelt and water pump change Oil changes for the engine and any diff/4wd specific couplings I know there are some issues with the Audi multitronic gearboxes, not sure if this falls into that grouping, but again fluid changes if required should be documented. Make sure EVERYTHING electronic works - the seats, the four zone air con and especially the air suspension. Any one of these has an issue it's going to get hellishly expensive to fix. Type and length of warranty - will it genuinely cover the expensive oily bits, and how long for? Will it cover your mum adding in a tow bar and then towing? Course, given the engine, it's going to like a serious drink when towing...... is there nothing with a slightly more frugal 2.7 or 3.0 TDI available? And does it have to be the size of an ocean-going liner like the A8? If it's only for toeing maybe an Octavia or Superb with the 1.9 TDI in 130bhp disguise is more appropriate. Must be a fair few of those knocking about in budget.
