  1. My beloved fabia elegance has finally been sold. We bought her used in 2009 and have loved every mile since, but at 14 years old we needed something a bit newer. What a brilliant car it was, roomy, comfy, well equipped, lovely engine and good dynamics. So sad to drive off without her. I want to pass on my thanks to everyone here at briskoda who has helped over the years with the problems we faced along the way. A true community of helpful people. We have bought a Fiat 500s for my wife in replacement but I doubt it will last as long as the skoda; ) Thanks once again.
  2. Brilliant, really good advice.ill check the wiring out this w/e
  3. Hi All, I finally got rid of the engine check light after 2 years of it being constantly on.. It was the EGR that needed a serious clean. I was so happy!! It stayed off for a month, and then yesterday came back on again :-( Ran the diagnostics through it and found that it is now logging P0136 02 Sensor bank 1 sensor 2 intermittent circuit issue. Is this a driveway fix and if so what part do I need? I guess the connection is perished so it might be worth replacing the sensor rather than bodging it.. Iain
  4. The climate control isn't a massive biggy TBH, it only covers 2-3k a year between the good ladies work, school and home. Cracking the windows is ok for the 1 in 50 times the aircon goes hot. The problem is the intermittent starting, I have to know that it is going to be reliable starting (I get the grief when it isn't!!!!). I'm going to replace the fob battery as that hasn't been done for years. I don't think I would be happy taking off the steering wheel to do the wiring bypass, so I will have to take a call on where to go next. Yesterday was a BAD day, my laptop broke (I am a programmer - my laptop is my world!), the wife was on the drive cranking the fabia to an inch of its life and then my Insignia reports a wheel speed sensor fault whilst delivering everyone to school/work because the other car wouldn't play. ARGH.
  5. looking at VCDS a bit further I think it is the immobiliser...

  7. Ran VCDS on auto across the entire car today and im left wondering if I should just bin the whole car and get something else lol. So the climate control is well naffed, the immobilizer has a problem (causing it not to start..) the ABS has a problem and there was one more for power steering that I rage deleted. lol. I guess it is a 14 year old car and niggles will be well on their way, but it is a shame because it is a lovely car and has done me really well. :-(
  8. any idea where abouts in vcds that is found?
  9. Hi All, I wonder if anyone can help me. My wife has an 02 plate 1.4 16v elegance, which has just developed an intermittent starting issue. It has done this 3 times across about 10 days now. So far, it has always been on a cold start - day day was wet, one day the car was in the garage. We have had a few issues with it recently. The EML came on about a week ago so I ran vcds across it and found that the EGR valve was totally clogged up (like completely!!!), I cleaned that out and reset the EML with good results, it hasn't been back since. Thought all was well until this morning when on the drive it took a good 10-15 cranks to get it running, i've got a video of one of the failed cranks for you to look at. Once it goes, it runs pretty well and feels responsive enough - it does occasionally "hunt" a bit at idle, but nothing major. This is the vid of the problem: https://youtu.be/rA7UwQWw8G0 Can anyone offer any ideas on what might be going on? History: 89k miles, belt done at 80k, full service at 87k (Feb this year)
  10. Hi all, I took off the airfiler assembly from the top of my 1.416v 02 plate to administer some first aid to my egr valve.. I'm having loads of problems with my fabia recently. The engine was running and I noticed that the small round flexible pipe that comes from down by the block and feeds in to the airbox was emitting a fair amount of smoke.. Is this something to be concerned about? I don't know what this pipe does, but smoke = bad in my books!! Ive just had the front 02 sensor done to try and stop a problem where the revs keep falling to zero then picking up again whilst driving.. 02 sensor didn't sort the issue :-( It went mad today, revs down, up, down up, down up, down then engine cuts. Mostly does this when warm.. It keeps cutting out when idling too. one minute it is there ok, the next it has just cut out. Anyone got any ideas if everything above is connected and what it might be?? Many thanls
  11. cheers guys - ive got my local garage doing the work (not skoda), they have done me well in the past :-) The oil light thing was the most concerning. I cant get a link between 02 sensors and oil pressure :-/
  12. My poor fabia.. Every week something else gets it :-( I have 02reg 1.4 16v elegance, 100 brake etc etc... Just recently, I would be driving along and the rev counter would dip to just below zero then shoot back up again.. I took it to dealer who have cleaned the TB and advised me that the front 02 sensor is duff. It is booked in for Thursday AM to have that fixed.. Today whilst driving, i've been getting the same weird revs thing, but todays trick was for the engine to actually cut out. dangerous when pulling away etc. coupled to this, the power steering gave out for a while and the ASR light came on for a while until I turned it off and on again. Most concerning was its last trick before I consigned it to the drive until it is fixed on Thursday. Driving along my road, revs drop, shoot back up again and again, power drops out and then back to normal. Then red oil light and beeping... I killed the engine straight away and pulled over, plenty of oil in there (to the top infact). It was then REALLY hard to start, and I got it home without seeing the red light of doom again. Is it possible all these things could be related to the 02 sensor?? things like PAS and ASR I am dubious and worried about!!! It is staying put now until I get it in on Thursday AM. Falling out of love with my fabia :-(
  13. sorted.. got garage out. A few fuses had gone, she is back up and running again :-)
  14. Hey, I posted yesterday about the fact that my fabia wouldnt start after a starter motor change. Well after much messing around I found thanks to some brilliant people on here that the earth wire was detached and had shorted out. Well happily that is all attached now and the car cranks over again, but it wont start. It almost catches, but wont go. I notice that I dont get any lights (ASR, airbag, battery etc) on the dash when cranking at all. I am getting power as i can hear the familiar noise when the drivers door opens and the door/boot open light works and so do the door lights. the battery is full as i tricked it to a full charge yesterday. I checked as many fuses as i could at the roadside, but they all seemed ok :-( Has anyone got any ideas what might be wrong?
  15. thanks, i will run down the road and have another poke around..
  16. which one is the earth - the one with the black cap that can be seen in the pic?
  17. I cant see from the wiring diagram that it does? would someone be kind enough to go and do a quick visual on their top bolt to see if anything is connected to it?
  18. This gets weirder... I just went back to the car and found that i got half a crank out of it (it wouldn't hold long enough to start annoyingly..) after that, again it was back to nothing except feint clicking. My first thoughts were obviously battery so i have whipped it out and it is on charge right now in my workshop. ok so based on that a) why did it start ok originally, and what caused the 2nd gear jolt and ASR light :-/ This is how the starter is wired - red plug clip is in and apparently in good condition and black is wired just next to it with the black plastic cover over it. notice the top bolt has an extra nut on the end. ive got a nagging feeling there should be something on there, but ive had a good poke around and cant see anything at all that is looking like it should go on there:
  19. yeh i checked the fuses in the little case inside the battery lid they seem fine too. If it shorted, do you think that is it game over with that starter? could it have done anything bad in the terminal 30 box ?
  20. ive noticed that there is nothing attached to the top bolt where I guess there should be the earth wire...... there is a wire attached to the bolt next to the solenoid plug. IM guessing this wont be helping. can someone post a picture of their starter motor showing where the wires come from and go to.. ive got the haynes manual and that confirms my suspicions. I have no idea how it worked in the first place if this is the case.. :-/ A pic would be awesome in getting this car back to its home.
  21. also, the lights work, light warning buzzer works - stereo is dead. thinking it through, the starter motor wasn't hot because i whipped the battery out at the road side and I didnt feel much going on. I did have to fiddle the gear linkage on the spline to get the top start bolt off - could that have caused the issue? I tightened everything back down, but the fact that it jolted changing to second makes me worry. Couldn't have happened at a worse time, I'm off away on work tomorrow afternoon and the wife is now carless :-/ any ideas greatly appreciated.
  22. argh, I didnt think to check - what are you thinking? it was a re-con unit rather than a new one. I also notice that when i go to stage one on the ignition, there are no warning lights (asr, airbag etc etc). the door/boot open lights are there and you can hear a noise when the drivers door is opened (priming of some sort?). When i turn the key, i do hear a slight clicking from the engine bay but with no lights on the dash I guess there is a deeper problem. I cant see any dead fuses, in the dash fuses or the fuses on the inside of the battery box.
  23. Hi I changed the starter motor on my 02 16v elegance and all was well, started fine 10 times or more.. first drive I went in to second gear, massive jolt asr light comes on. I turn off the engine and then nothing.. engine wont turn, no noise from starter at all, I cant see any duff fuses etc. Any ideas? It is stuck in the road side right now :(
  24. I will give it another go - is this the standard way people get the motor off or am I making this morning complicated than it needs be!?
