  1. Afaik the 1.9 PD does not have the fuel pressure to burn down soot in the DPF. Some things on this model (I own a 2005): The dual mass flying wheel (DMF) break down often. They can easily be replaced by a single mass flying wheel (SMF). I had both of my shock springs break on me... I had a small fuel leak at some point I had a small coolant leak at some point My turbo has been making noise since I bought it, but nothing is bad about it. The engine is reliable if it has had good maintenance. Look for that. Mine has 430.000km on it and it will probably keep going to 500k. Not sure what is going in on the UK but on the continent, diesels are easy too find these days. Lots of uncertainty on value due to regulations. The only time the car left me was when someone had been working on it (turbo pressure was gone due to loose pipe). I replaced tons of stuff but nothing weird (brakes, ac compressor but I believe it was fixed on later models, ac radiator, shock absorbers, battery). Not much rust, original exhaust, reliable starting, ...
  2. The new part, a towing hook, had some parts mounted in the fuse box. One of the wires was disconnected: the air mass sensor ... Everything was paid for under warranty, including the towing costs.
  3. I'm an Octavia II driver from Holland. My second hand 2005/7 Octavia 1.9 tdi Ambiente quit on me on the first day! It just didn't run any more. After a 30 minute drive the engine doesn't get fuel any more (that's what they say at the garage). The car had 110k km to testdrive so... The only new part on the car is a towing hook and a long-life-service. I felt pretty bad when that happened (for us it is quite an investment). I now drive a boring Ford Escort and have a nice Skoda key in my pocket. The garage is trying to make it feel like everything is going to be fine (which is nice).
