  1. Your original ones look just like mine did when they came out.....squashed! cant remember exactly how i did it now, but they did fit
  2. Just been to see the beast, she had her belt done last between 3 and 4 years ago....looks her age, bit scabby round the front arches as per every other one ive seen, sills and floor all look good, brake pipes better than mine were (and this has twice the miles) have 20 hours to decide if shes worth investing in...should land her for under 400 quid, t&t til march. Ay or nay?
  3. just what i wanted to hear so 124k is alright then....argh this is doing my head in now! theres another one with only 84k on pretty locally too....i get the feeling i have the bug or whatever it is that keeps you guys here
  4. Seriously? Only dieseler i ever had was a ZX, that had 180k on when i killed that...and have you come accross the engine code AFF? found plenty listings for AEF, but not this one...unless of course its just a clerical error on the VRM lookup...
  5. will check that out when i go see it...she's got 124k on the clock, looks just like my old one. except green Obviously cant expect miracles for something this cheap, but i was pleased with the petrol one i had, so have to at least look
  6. As some of you may know, i lost my 13mpi to a timing chain failure ten days ago, and i have stumbled accross a particularly cheap dieseler with short t&t.....obviously i'm familiar with the bodywork elements to look for, whats the no-no's when it comes to buying the heavy oil variety?
  7. Never got the chance to find out :'( Timing chain slipped, and the phrase "uneconomical repair" came to mind. She left us yesterday hauled away on an ambulance, £170 wasnt a bad return for a quick sale on ebay tho. Lessons learned, will know for next time, would have another one, if i can find one as good! Thanks for the help and crack guys, hopefully will be back some day!
  8. Havent got time or experience for a full on engine swap. and whats the chances of finding a good one in breakers? Cursing that government scrappage scheme now! And on top of that, it was going to need work for the MOT in a weeks time, and its just not economical to start spending loads on a 13yo car. End of the road for this one. :'(
  9. Had a look through the aforementioned hole, chain is still there but the teeth on the upper sprocket dont appear to be.....Sensible answers only please, is it worth putting new sprocket and chain on or is it fubar?
  10. Ive figured that part out since i got in (and picked up the haynes)...weather was tropical and it was dark, had kids with me too, so just hauled its a*** back home for now. Cant think of anything else that would have caused it to die completely. Oil and battery warning lights on, and the cooling system hasnt dumped its guts on the tarmac. nor any sigsns of overheating/HGF. Pretty sure its very dead, its a lot of work and expense to sort to find out it fails the MOT on other stuff. Just havent got the cash or time to chuck at it. I hear the alternators on the MPi with PS are worth more than the car though...might be a ray of light there
  11. Well, looks like the Skoda adventure is over. Strongly suspect timing chain failure tonight :( MOT was due in 2 weeks and she needed a bit of brake work for that, so it's away to the scrappers after the post mortem tomorrow. Thanks to all those who have helped with the various posts i've put on here, just wish i could find another one, cos pound for pound, its been the most reliable car i have ever owned. RIP Flick 24/04/1998 - 15/01/2011
  12. valve clearances could do with being done, she is pretty noisy....will get the feelers out at the weekend and see how that goes. probs due an oil change too, so will do that while i'm on. snow permitting.
  13. MOT looming....brake pipes more than likely!
