Sorry - sounds like a tractor with a blowing exhaust!

Your car will not be doing different revs at 70 mph - that's for certain!

A little bit more oomph for a little bit cash?

Good work - 189k here but just traded it in. Fancy buying it back though for a winter runner -

Dunno - but what on earth will it add to your life? My car does it but I'm yet to figure out the point! -
Why do we fall in love with our skoda VRS ?

This is the list of cars i posted on Scoobynet that i saw sat on the hard shoulder over the course of a few weeks. Audi A4 (59) Audi A4 (05) Seat Leon (58) VW Golf (59) Toyata Yaris (07) Audi A4 (56) Ford Mondeo (04) Audi A3 (58) Audi A3 (07) Ford Focus (04) Vauxhall Corsa (98) Audi A6 (07) Audi A3 (58) Audi A6 (06) I can't find the other post i did which is a longer list but it makes pretty similar reading. I like Audis but could not own one due to the above. -

Really - I travel around 400 miles a week on the M1 and I see at least 2 broken down Audi's every week! Passats and Golfs are fairly regular too. I'll try and find a post I made on Scoobynet on this very subject! -

An Audi is the quickest way to find yourself stranded on the hard shoulder with VW's close behind! -
I've not fallen victim to any marketing. The fabia has done 188k (160k by me and the wife) miles with servicing every 15k. Beyond consumables the only thing to have gone wrong is the steering rack and the radiator. Working on today's prices based on 48mpg it would have cost me £20,305 in diesel whereas if i had your petrol Fabia it would have cost me £22,885. There is no way in hell my the servicing over the years has cost me £2580 so i would only be a victim of stupidity if i had opted for a petrol. Just as an aside - the reason behind the VRS purchase was to have some get up and go which a petrol Fabia simply doesn't have.

In which case an Impreza would be the way forward? If my daily commute was not the 80 miles that if is and my mpg figure bring as important as it is, a VRS would be way, way down the list!
-
That begs the question then - why buy a VRS?
-
What has tightness got to do with it?

Assuming he is running a stock VRS 35mpg suggests an issue with the car not the fuel. Between our 2 VRS's over 190k miles between them I have never seen less than 43 mpg with fuel used from all suppliers!
