  1. Generally the build quality and reliability of the vRS has been abouve previous new cars, but given the choice of my vRS and on old RS Ford, I'd still go back to the blue oval. You can do all the mechanical jobs on the drive and generaally always get the things running. I've got no faith in new cars at all.........
  2. Yep, it does sound like SUK ay have gotten involved as I have had in the past. If I'd told a customer that I looked at the cam belt and it looked OK, so I didnt change it, I'd have been strung up......how does a main dealer get away with that ****e?!
  3. Luck has a lt to do with it too......my 59 vRS had its windscreen written off and a huge stone chip in the bonnet after like 1500 miles! Don't forget that paint and manufacturing costs have gone up in recent years, meaning paint is spread thinner on body panels to reduce cost prices etc....the less paint you use per car the more GP you make per sale
  4. Mate, sorry to hear this. It does sound like a boost pipe issue similar to one I had a couple years ago. Now I dont want to scare you but the next big problem I had was a blown engine at 37700 miles.....happened just last week but I am a week in warantee still so VAG are fooing the bill!!
  5. Hey there, I had no end of faults with my climate control when I first has my vRS, and the workshop couldn't put it right. I asked if they had another car with the same set up, to swap the controller unit, which they did, 4 screws out and in the new unit went, no messing about required!
  6. Yep, well happy it's happened while the warantee is still valid. I've heard horror stories of the same thing happening at the same mileage just outside warantee that has cost people upwards of £5000. After a clutch failure at 9000, turbo boost pipe failure at 10000, climate control blowers unit failure at 15000, water pump destruction at 23000 and now this, I seriously doubt I'd be looking at another petrol vRS. I'd like to think VAG group would be keen to keep sales up by rectifying these problems, but all these recall jobs seem to keep going under the radar.
  7. Hey guys, Well, after a good 12 months of totally trouble free motoring (AFTER a new water pump last August) the Skoda gremlins have finally struck my baby down again. Friday, drove to work no problems, turned of the car, got into work. Got in the car to do the chip run at lunch time........and it was labouring to fire up. Turning over, just not firing. Started up after 5 seconds, no warning lights at all. Got chips, back in the car, same thing. No loss of power, driving well still. Come chucking out time friday night at work, same thing. Drive home was no problem, turned off car and went in the house. Got up Saturday morning, just needed to pop into the Post Office to pick something up, and it wouldn't start at all........Not even thinking of firing up. My first thought was the fuel pump or something, but then the exhaust and ECU fault lamp came on. Bums! Called RAC, then Skoda got a VW engineer to come out who hooked it up to the diagnostics........he said its a valve timing issue........The car should have had a recall due the the tensioner needing to be replaced. So, lots of faffing around, got the car recovered, had to sort a hire car out, and then get to the workshop today, to find out what is going on. Just had a call from Skoda, and the vales are bent........They are now checking to see if the pistons are damaged................. Why the hell am I reading so many stories of the newer vRS having timing belt failures at 35-40,000 miles (mine only has 37,700 on the clock). I've only ever driven it really hard a couple of times, and I ALWAYS keep my eye on collant/oil levels and put the best in that you can buy. So now, my baby may be having a full transplant after not even 3 years on the road!!! That doesn't really sound right to me, but thank god my warantee is still valid for little over a week.....if this had happened in a fortnight I'd be buggered!!!!!
  8. 32, with 2 daughters (3 and 1) and sometimes the threat of a smack is good enough. There has to be some kind of repercussion for their actions. Try to tell a 3 year old who is hell bent on running towards a busy road, the dangers of that situation. It's too early an age for them to comprehend death, so you have to obviously warn them on their level what could happen (hit by car, hospital etcetc), if they persist, knowing full well it's winding you up, the threat of a smack can be enough. Sometimes not. Taken in context, a smack CAN be the right thing to do, but that is not in many situations in life. 9 times out of ten a quick sharp tap on the hand or leg can be enough of a shock (not causing physical harm) that it stops them in their tracks. On the whole, I agree that it's a form of discipline, but obviously, as pointed out by other memebers, it should only be used in a good parenting environment. I've been around too many arseholes that use smacking as an everyday thing. Instead of talking and correcting naughty beahviour, a quick smack and "shut up, stop it" is the norm. The beliefe that any parent that smacks their child is an abusive parent.........I'd love to see how they would deal with problems living outside of their cotton wool coated world. Life is generally not nice, and if a small smack made the difference between my child being abducted (because she talked to and walked of with a stranger which she knows is wrong) or staying safe, then lock me up.....My main priority in life is to make damn suremy kids are safe, and outlive me!!!!!
  9. I was amazed the other day sitting in the car with the kids waiting for the missus to come out of Tesco....... A woman came over to a car with a trolley, and let it hit the back bumper pretty hard. I thought to myself "If my missus ever did that I'd kill her!". She then took all the bags out, put them on the boot of said car. Now I'm thinking, "where the hell is she gonna put the shopping?!?!?!". Cue keys out of pocket, she then unlocks THE CAR NEXT TO IT, and opens her boot, puts the shopping away and leaves the trolley at the back of the other car and buggers off!!!!!! Astonishing! Oh, and if you think people hate cars here, I was in Melboure, Aus for Xmas, and the amount of battered cars over there........Jeez!!! And I want to live there! :S
  10. My clutch died pretty early on in my FL vRS, after only 15,000 miles. The seal on the gear box hadn't been installed right, and the clutch got ruined. It had been making noises pulling away and reversing from about 5,000. The first garage (where I bought it from) told me it was my driving style........... :wonder: Then Redditch Skoda had it in and sorted it the following day. At 26,000 it's now making the same noise, so until I find a MK1 vRS, I've got to get this one straight before I get rid.......
  11. Hey all, Well the day has come, I'm after a new job, but until then, the cost of mortgage/car/kids/wife etc are piling up, so I'm after a cheaper car that won't cost much more to run, but is mine in cash........ After scouring the net for some decent sub £3000 MK1's, I'm seeing quite a few that I like. I've read and re-read chicken_eyebrow's buying guide in this group, and most of it is common to buying any car if you've been around them for a few years, but still it will be printed off and going with me when I have a look. The engine codes are a good point that I can now quickly look at, knowing what a vRS engine code starts with!!! I've found a few on the Trader, and just wanted to see if they've been owned by anyone here?! http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201126394621629/sort/priceasc/price-to/3000/model/octavia/make/skoda/postcode/b980hu/radius/1501/page/1/keywords/rs/advert-type/featured-listing/dealer/153512/usedcars?logcode=flp http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201140419647501/sort/priceasc/usedcars/price-to/3000/model/octavia/make/skoda/radius/1501/page/1/keywords/rs/postcode/b980hu?logcode=p http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201136414359943/sort/priceasc/usedcars/price-to/3000/model/octavia/make/skoda/postcode/b980hu/radius/1501/page/1/keywords/rs?logcode=p http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201140419534909/sort/priceasc/usedcars/price-to/3000/model/octavia/make/skoda/page/2/radius/1501/postcode/b980hu/keywords/rs?logcode=p http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201116385338965/sort/priceasc/usedcars/price-to/3000/model/octavia/make/skoda/keywords/rs/page/3/postcode/b980hu/radius/1501?logcode=p Now, between £2000 and £3000 there doesn't seem to be a HUGe ammount of difference in miles on the clock, versus general condition. Am I better off getting hold of an 80-90k model for nearer £3000 or £2000-£2500 and save a bit for a higher (110-120k) that's been well looked after....................My head's spinning after looking at so many over the weekend, I just wondered if any of you kind peeps have been in a similar situation recently and what gems you have found....... Thanks in advance, Neil
  12. There seems to be lots of renderings of the new car, but these seem about the most likely: Not looking good for next year release, I'd just be happy with the new badge for mine!
  13. Just replied to your IM mate, yeah they should get it done quick. Redditch Skoda had it in on the Monday and I had it back the following day. Fingers crossed they should easily do it under warantee too. Mine's a 59 plate, so you should still be well in.
  14. That thing looks awesome! Any planned power upgrades for the road car now then?!?!?! The 267bhp that Audi VW and Seat get is just not fair............
  15. Well guys, all the work has been done and it seems to run better now. Low down revs when cold or in traffic are more stable, and there had been a nasty stink when the aircon was turned off. That came from all the coolant leaking onto the aircon pump, so I'm told. Not sure how true it is, but the smell has gone.......... With any luck, as the fluid was still keeping everything cool while driving, the engine should be ok. I guess the only way I'll find out if I've buggered it up is in time.......... :S
  16. I had very similar issues with mine last year.......the local Skoda dealer caused it during a service/clutch fault find. They actually split one of the boost pipes for the turbo, leaving me with hardly any power, kangarooing around, and no more than 3000 rpm......Just a thought.
  17. Hey all. Was down in Cornwall on the holidays last week, had some great blasts around the country lanes. Drove over to Christchurch on Friday night for a stop off, meal beer etc. Got in the car Saturday morning, and the coolant warning came on.......checked the expansion tank.............EMPTY! Checked under the car, and there is all my coolant!!! Limped it home(Brum) by topping up every other services, and by Sunday morning, 1.5 litres had gone through. Got it to Trust Skoda in Redditch (opposite where I work thank God!!) and they've just told me the water pump has failed......Anyone else had this after 22000 miles?!?!?!? Thanks Neil :'(
  18. Lots of people say the same. Why so? Is it more tuneable, better handling etc? I'm loving my mk2 FL, but it does feel like a bit of a lump compared to the couple of mk1's that I've had the pleasure of test driving...........
  19. I had a similar problem years ago with my old Escort RS turbo. At first I thought it would be just the fuel filter, but it turned out to be the fuel pump was on it's last legs. Might not be the same in your case, but maybe worth looking at? Also, had A mondeo ST200 a while ago, and similar thing was happening, but when turning either way. That one was a buggered power steering pump, and it was taking all the power to run the pump so it cut the engine!!! :wonder:
  20. Lucky git, I hope he enjoys it. Looks a minter! What's the exhaust system, looks like a nice sporty back box on there?
  21. Cheers guys, I guess you can always blag a bargain if a quick sale is wanted. If I wasn't moving house over the next few weekends I'd go and have a look at that one. Defo not in a rush to buy (obviously buying a house aint cheap!!!) so I'll be on the lookout until the summer I reckon. Thanks peeps!
  22. Hey guys. After 18 months of my lovely FL OctyRS, I fancy going back and getting one for fine weather/track days etc. The mk1 is the one that started my love affair with the vRS brand, but I've never had one. I've already read through chicken_eyebrow's buying guide which is awesome, and will be printed for future use. Thing is, I've been looking around and there seems to be a HUGE difference in prices but for fairly similar cars (age, mileage etc). Here's one I found on autotrader, but is this too cheap/expensive? http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201115384533869/sort/pricedesc/usedcars/price-to/2000/model/octavia/make/skoda/radius/1500/postcode/b303aa/page/4?logcode=p I've seen more on there with almost double the covered distance on the clock for a little bit more in price. HELP! I don't want a ****ter, but I also don't fancy getting ripped off!!!!
  23. Also, the Aussies have a version (demo cars only) that are uprated. They call it the RS-P: They are talking about relesing the car as the new LE version of the vRS. "Power output has risen from the standard 147kW thanks to the adoption of a carbon fibre airbox and three-inch exhaust delivering around 155kW. Frankly the output feels substantially more. We hear suggestions that Skoda's workshop boys may have accidentally dropped an alternative engine map into the turbo 2.0-litre's ECU. If that's the case, the figure's probably closer to 200kW." 155Kw is 210Bhp, and the 200Kw is a much more merry 271Bhp, more like the Audi's, VW's and Seats with a similar engine setuo.
  24. I'm on there as Virusman26, and I'm playing COD Black ops, Forza 3, PGR4, anything along those lines really. Just looking for non-US based, non arse holes to play with online!!
