  1. Had mine (Octavia)for 6 years  Was prob one of the first bods to buy a vRS. No regrets. It's been a great car and has served me very well. Shame the new one is 2k more than the old with less standard kit. The Skoda dealers I've been at have always been very good.
  2. I've recently driven both the ST TDCI and the vRS TDI. I prefered the drive of the vRS to be honest. The mondeo has a dual-mass clutch which can mean a less than smooth move from 1st to 2nd and I felt the brakes weren't very good. The kit on the mondeo is very good, though, and the seats are very comfy if recaros are fitted. Also you can get good examples for around 13-14k which are around 12 months old, saving 10k off new. However i suspect the ST will continue to depretiate heavily over the next 2 years, which is why, in the end I decided not to buy one.
  3. Don't really want to buy a new one as Skoda have become too expensive in my opinion so it's 2nd hand or a different car :( I'll just keep an eye out for a vRS with maxidot fitted - unless I'm tempted by the Mazda 6 MPS I'm testing tomorrow
  4. Hi all, I'm looking around for a new Octavia Mk2 VRS in race Blue. One of my requirements is that it has maxidot fitted, but it appears that there are very few around that have this (2 on autotrader in blue and there 17k ). Can the maxidot system be installed by a dealer or is it factory only ? Was thinking I could get one wihtout it and have it fitted by a dealer if this is possible. Same with cruise control as these are the 2 must haves. Ta!
  5. I've checked the congestion charge issue and any vehice using an alternative fuel is except from the charge. The alternative is lpg, fuel cell and electric. Look here: London Congestion Charge Exemption / Congestion Charge Zone Exempt - Ashwoods Not much good to me though as I live in Durham Now just need to decide on a petrol or derv
  6. Some good responses - thanks. I've test driven the petrol and derv Vrs today and I really like the derv with it's torque, although the petrol was nice and smooth. I must admit I'm now swaying more towards the derv to be honest. with regards to tax, the RFL is based on emissions, so if you run LPG and have the co2 tested and it's lower than the standard cars co2, you can inform the DVLA and they will adjust your RFL if you can prove it's less. Same with the London congestion charge - if you run LPG i'm sure you can be exempt from paying it.
  7. I've had a quote of £1450 to convert so thats not too bad. Modern conversions also give you almost equal MPG to that of petrol, but say it did give 25mpg compared to 30mpg for petrol, i'd be saving aprox £800 a year in fuel if i did 10000 miles. So in 20000 miles time i'd have got the costs of the conversion back. I've put 75000 on my mk1 vrs in 6 years, so if I'd have converted that i'd have saved £3000 after taking the conversion into account, plus some small tax saving due to lower emmisions. I'd prefer not to use LPG but 48p litre compared to 1.01 petrol and 1.06 derv (and rising) means I have to seriously consider it
  8. Hi all, I'm in the market for a new car, replacing my nearly 7 years old VRS Mk1 with a nice new Mk2 version. However, with the price of petrol and derv at the moment, I'm seriously considering an LPG conversion. I've had a chat with a conversion specialist and they say the car could be converted without any loss in performance Before I buy the new motor I do need to know the engine code for the new VRS to confirm it can be converted. Can anyone help me with this ? search on forums has come up blank. Cheers
  9. Hi all, My brakes are now just about shot (72k on orginal discs and pads  ) so time to get these replaced. Don't want to spend a fortune as I'm planning on changing the car this time next year. Been looking at the Mintex brake box (
  10. I leave it on for 99% of the time. Only off when at lights and I have something "challenging" alongside me I've found that too many times with ASR on it's bogged me down and I've been left behind. Switching it off allows me to control any spin and get away - fast.
  11. Would have thought that the aux belt would have made the noise either turning left or right. I've been out at lunch and drove around in a circle a bit (people must have thought I'm mad) and it can make a right old noise, and I can even feel the vibration through the bottom of the car. Been quote
  12. Cheers. I'm now thinking not the clutch. This morning going to work I have now noticed the noise occurs when put the power on when turning left. So maybe it's a CV joint instead ?
  13. Hi all, Just got my Vrs Mk1 back from a service and cam belt change and when driving it home noticed a rumbling noise now and again while the revs are low, usually in 1st or 2nd gear. It's intermittent and typically when taking out with the lad at the garage, it didn't show up. Running in 3rd/4th/5th appears fine. I then when to park it in my garage and noticed the noise when the clutch was biting on an up-hill gradient. Keeping on the clutch kept the rumbling noise and resulted in a burning type smell and some smoke from under the bonnet. I'm suspecting the clutch needs to be replaced Can anyone confirm that this sounds like the right disgnosis of this problem ? Cheers
  14. They are not a VAG garage, but do know a thing or two about motors. The owner has a Passat 1.8T so does know these engines quite well.
