  1. At precisely 98-102kph, mine makes an ever so slight, on and off humming/vibration sound. On for about a second, then off for half a second, then on for a second, then off.... and so on. It is barely perceptible, passengers say that they cannot hear/feel it but I can and it drives me insane knowing that I can hear it and others can't! At first I thought it may be tyre noise or wheel balance. But even with my winter rims and tyres it is still there. I have played with letting it coast at that speed and it is still there. Doing that speed at high or low revs it is still there. Even with the car heavily loaded it is still there! This has lead me to believe that it is some panel / bumper / under-body-guard part of the car which resonates with the air passing over and under the car at this speed. Has anybody else had this or can they offer any advice. The best advice will probably be "Just ignore it" which is what I will probably do. (2006 140PD Elegance estate, 59000k)
  2. I bought a 06 plate 2.0 PD 140BHP elegance estate five months ago and have never looked back. I commute 5 miles each way to work each day and once every 2-3 weeks drive from Germany to the UK and have already done 2 trips down to the French Alps and throughout it has never skipped a beat and failed to offer comfort and refinement. So far, apart from fuel and a service it has not cost me anything in maintenance. The 2.0 engine has plenty of grunt and will happily return 55-60mpg on a long autobahn trip at 70mph with summer tyres on. However even at 80mph with winter tyres and the cruise control on it still gets 50-55mpg on long European motorway trips. I have nothing but praise for the engine. As for estate or hatch; I think that the estate looks much better and ads so much more practicality, the floor space may be the same but until you own an estate you will not realise how convenient it is to be able to throw a chair in the boot, an extra bag or big box. Another advantage of the estate is that it comes with roof rails already on, meaning putting skis and roof boxes on the top is a lot less hassle.
  3. This may sound a minor thing and I am sure that it can be programmed out with VAGCOM but what really irritates me is the seatbelt warning bleep. The fact that there is a bleep is not what annoys me, but because I drive a diesel I have to wait for the glow plugs to warm. The sensible, logical and quickest way to get in and start the car would be 1. put key in 2. turn ignition 3. whilst waiting for glow plugs to warm and warning light to go off, use the time to get comfortable and fasten seatbelt 4 start engine 5. drive away. but to avoid the annoying bleep I must 1. get comfortable 2. fasten seatbelt 3 put key in and turn ignition 4. sit there doing absolutely nothing for 5-10 seconds whilst glow plugs warm 5. start engine 6.drive away I know it is such a minor thing but it really irritates me. Other than that, my octavia is fantastic!
  4. I've also been reading about winter tyres and how people feel very strongly both for and against them.... Ideally I would get a set now but I think that they will be a purchase for next year. I bought the chains as the local Police can specify that only vehicles with snow chains (or textile equivalent) are allowed up to the ski resort if the snow is too bad, anybody without them can be told to abandon their car. Walking up a snowy road to a bus stop wouldn't be the best start to a holiday! P.S. Nice snow pic.
  5. I've just bought myself an '06 elegance estate with what I think may be the same wheels as yours. I'm also heading to the Alps for a bit of skiing straight after new year so had a quick look into snow chains last week. Having never bought/used chains before, the ones I settled on were from from Needed4. They sell the correct size to fit my 205/55/R16 tyres and cost £35 inc delivery (cheaper than any ebay or Halford ones I could find), it also says that they are 9mm chains so there shouldn't be an issue with clearance. I also looked at the textile 'bag' alternatives but decided that I couldn't justify paying over double the price. I'm away from home at the moment so I'm not sure if they have been delivered yet / if they will be a good fit but I will let you know when they arrive. Does anybody else have any snow chain advice?
  6. Apparently you can with non MP3 ones. I think that I need to buy a clever little box that plugs into a spare CD changer socket at the back of the radio unit. The clever little box pretends to be a CD player and allows an AUX input. I may be wrong and probably am wrong. I'll have a scout around the site to find some answers.
  7. Thanks for the warm welcome. My first project will be to fit an AUX in to the stream radio. The guides that people have written on here will hopefully save me an expensive visit to the dealers.
  8. Hello everybody, I've just bought a 2006 2.0TDI Octavia estate, lucky me. Unfortunately because I'm out of the country at the moment I have had to trust somebody else to pick it up from the garage and look after it until I return. Lucky them. I have just spent the whole evening reading the forums on Briskoda, very useful stuff.
