  1. Sorry if this is a really silly question, but couldn't see any obvious answer anywhere! I'm soon to take delivery of a new Skoda Octavia Estate 1.5 eTEC SE L, which has the keyless entry and start function. Having never had a keyless start car before I wondered, how does one cycle through the various ignition stages as with a normal key ignition? For example, if the car engine is off but I need to put the window down, how does that work? The user manuals etc just seem to refer to starting and stopping the engine, so I was a bit confused!
  2. My 2002 Fabia 1.4 is currently in the garage having its service and MOT done. The mechanic has just called to say that he has put an advisory on the MOT as the front tyres are wearing down on the inside edge almost to the limit. He said the ball joint on the driver’s side is damaged and the alignment is out, which has caused it. The thing is, the front tyres were new on only five months ago, so have probably done a couple of thousand miles. Does this sound right because it seems like an extremely short period of time to me. Is it is a case of the car has probably hit a pothole in that time or something, damaged the tracking and ball joint and that has ruined the tyres?
  3. Hi all, Prompted by the Engine Management light coming on my Fabia 1.4 Classic (2002) a couple of weeks ago, I invested in a cable and VCDS-Lite to check the error codes. The scan came up with these results: VCDS-Lite Version: Release 1.1 Saturday, 12 May 2012, 12:40:25. In terms of how the car is running, it has been shuddering when idle more than usual for the last couple of weeks (about the time the engine light started coming on) and it seems there may be a coolant leak somewhere, as the Check Coolant light comes on sometimes (though it has done since I've owned the car for two years intermittently!) and I have had to top it up every couple of months or so recently. Does anything in the above seem like it might be causing that? I looked up the 01598 code and that said it referred to the battery being faulty - I did fit a new battery about a month ago, but it seemed to work OK, but judging from the above codes, could that be an issue? Any help greatly appreciated!
  4. Brilliant, thanks - as a total beginner to VCDS I wondered if there were different cables for different cars. Thanks again!
  5. Hi all, I am looking to buy a cheap cable to run VCDS-lite on my 2002 Skoda Fabia 1.4 Classic, to find out why the engine management warning light has come on. I am new to this, so just wondered if anyone could tell me if the below cable would work with this car? http://www.amazon.co.uk/OBD2-OBD-II-Cable-409-1-Skoda/dp/B001C1MNTM/ref=sr_1_cc_2?s=aps&ie=UTF8&qid=1335875122&sr=1-2-catcorr
  6. Hi all, sorry, but just to confirm, would the following cable work for running VCDS on my 2002 1.4 Skoda Fabia Classic? http://www.amazon.co.uk/OBD2-OBD-II-Cable-409-1-Skoda/dp/B001C1MNTM/ref=sr_1_cc_2?s=aps&ie=UTF8&qid=1335875122&sr=1-2-catcorr
  7. Thanks all, I'll look into purchasing a cable and getting VDCS to get the fault code
  8. That's what I was afraid of! Wondering if they are all just quirks of a 10 year old car or if it's a specific problem causing everything.
  9. Thanks, I'm based in Rochdale. I've never taken the car to a Skoda dealership before but wondering if it's worth it to get them to take a proper look at it.
  10. There's been a few minor niggles and issues with my 2002 Fabia 1.4 MPI Classic recently, and wondered if anyone might be able to spot a pattern and see if there's one thing that might be wrong. Chain of events as below: A few weeks ago the battery went, so I bought a replacement and fitted it. However, the battery was a few mm taller than the old one, so the battery cover was slightly higher and the bonnet pushes down on it a little when it's closed. Last week, the driver's side headlight low beam bulb went (although it hadn't been changed for as long as I've had the car - 2 and a half years - so was due a change I'm sure). I changed this tonight no problem, but then found the side light on the same side had gone as well. I think it was working just before I changed the bulb but can't be 100% sure. Just before I changed the bulb, the engine management warning light came on and has stayed on despite a test drive and perhaps 5 starts of the engine. The engine seems a little shuddery, especially just after revving when idle, but it still does seem to be running OK apart from that (it's always been a little shuddery when idle, just a little). There appears to be a coolant leak as I have to top the coolant up every couple of months (as the level drops) and the coolant warning light comes on. Are these things likely to be a coincidence or all related? Could it all stem from the battery being a bit taller than the old one? And is it likely I somehow damaged the side light when changing the low beam (although I don't remember touching it at all). Sorry for all the questions, but get the feeling a diagnostic trip to the local garage might be beckoning!
  11. Hi, wondering if anyone could offer any advice on this one. The other weekend the battery on my 2002 Fabia 1.4 gave up the ghost and needed to be replaced. I bought a new battery from a local seller, and when I came to fit it found that it fitted fine in the tray but was maybe 6-7mm taller than the old battery. As a result, the battery cover fits over it and the catches hold the cover in place on one side, but don’t quite reach on the other side. The bonnet still closes fine, although it does just need pushing down a little on the cover to close. I think by getting some wire and wrapping this round the catches of the battery cover to pull them together, this should hopefully bring the cover down far enough to stop the bonnet pushing the cover down when it closes. Just wondered if anyone else had experienced this and if the above solution sounds like it might be OK? The battery terminals are only touching the plastic of the battery cover and no metal.
  12. Thanks all, that’s very helpful, the plenum chamber may be the offender actually re: the leaks into the footwell, I’ll take a look and see. Thanks again!
  13. Hi all, I’m taking my 2002 Skoda Fabia 1.4 in for a service and MOT next week, and while it’s there I will also be asking them to look at a few other things that have been going wrong on it. Before I did I thought I would list them here and see if anyone could spot a likely cause and if they might all be related: The ‘headlights on’ warning alarm does not come on when the lights are on and the driver’s door is opened. Also, on occasion, when I unlock the car and have the driver’s door open, the car will sometimes try to lock itself again. I assume this is because it does not always know the driver’s door is open – could this be the microswitch? The rear washer pipe appears to be split/unhooked. When it try to wash the rear window water just spills out on to the ground, seemingly near the front of the car. Occasionally, the boot will refuse to open using the pressure sensor above the number plate. It will, however, open if I open the rear driver’s side passenger door. There is sometimes water in the driver’s footwell and behind the driver’s seat. This seems mostly after it has been raining but I can’t see any visible leaks. The passenger’s side seems unaffected. Does anyone know if there may be a primary cause to all of these leading to a ‘domino effect’? If so, are there any rough ideas as to what this might cost at a garage to fix? Thanks all!
  14. A slight vibration throughout the car, yeah. Although seem to be able to feel it more when sat driver's side than passenger side
