  1. it was the compressor. thankfully covered under extended warranty. cost to me: £0
  2. i have no cool air from my A/C so i tried this, and it just reads i0. no temp button, so i rotated the temp knobs, but no codes. i had a refrigeration engineer pal check the gas, and he thought it was ok, but it was only the standing pressure as the compressor doesn't activate. her thought it was likely a fuse, relay, pressure switch or compressor clutch. it's not the fuse :( anyone got any suggestions before i give to a dealer?
  3. i have bridgestones on mine. smooth blacktop and they are ok, but hit a stretch of more open texture surface & they are 'kin horrendous.
  4. engine noise on my 1.9 is very muted and civilised. the tyre roar is shocking though.
  5. looking to buy new wipers for my 08 octavia estate. wiperblades.co.uk list these but a double check with the blades fitted to my car (owned from 8k so assumed OEM) is only 21" for drivers side. wiperblades.co.uk insist 24" is correct. is my current fitment coming up short?
  6. i am baffled by reported problems at roundabouts. can't say i've had any issues at all, aside from a very manageable delay when pulling into fast moving traffic. my DSG also had no problems in the recent snow and ice (we didn't get that much to be fair), or parking.
  7. take up can be a bit sudden if you nail it, so i avoid doing it. i think it is just the drag of the oil on the plates, not drag of the friction plates. others think differently. the 7 speed with dry plates does not drag. i mostly leave mine in D. i might knock it into N on particularly long waits. never use the tiptronic. my view is, if i'd wanted a manual, i'd have bought one. no problem with either. very slightly. not ever been a concern to me. i should mention, that i find it very tricky to come to a completely smooth halt with the DSG. it is still driving right up to the point of complete stop. combine that with the most over servoed brakes i can ever remember (and i am an ex citroen driver), and it is quite a skill to come to a jerk free stop. IMO it would be better if the clutch disengaged slightly earlier. that is my only real complaint, and i would still have one over the manual. oh. they seem to use a fair bit more diesel than a manual too, if mine's anything to go by. but i am only comparing it with what i've seen claimed for manuals here, i've not owned one.
  8. on my 08 octavia the pipe is attached to the nozzle fitting with a white, hard plastic 90° elbow (i just refitted it the other day.) i don't think a tie wrap is going to hold it on better.
  9. must apologise for the woeful quality of the pics. i was in a rush and they looked much sharper on the camera trim is held on by little plastic clips which sit on plastic pillars attached to the trim. careful when pulling them out as they can also unclip from the pillars. no harm done, just don't lose one. when i could get at them, i used the black pry bar to easily free the clips. if you just pull the trim, it takes a lot of effort. the other tool is a trim tool i used to pull back the lower edge of the trim far enough to get my fingers behind it to get a good grip. undo the three 17mm(?) nuts on the lamp unit and it pops out. push the white plastic water pipe back on and reverse the process. slightly fiddly getting the top of the lower trim panel engaged with the top, but no biggie. couple of tips: i stood on a couple of milk crates. made the job much easier. when nearly all the clips are undone, don't let the panel flop down or the still attached pillars can get damaged . DAMHIK :'( (fortunately invisible when trim refitted)
  10. just done this job this morning on my pre FL, but imagine it is largely the same as yours. bit of a pig, but i was helped out by a guy on another thread basically. you just pull at the lower edge of the lower trim panel until the first few clips come undone. then work around until they are all out. i found a smallish prybar sprung the clips out quite easily, but there's no access for using one on the first few clips. undo two screws that are now accessible, and unclip the upper trim piece. the light/washer unit comes out after undoing three plastic nuts. hang on a minute and i'll post a couple of pics. much easier if you can see how it works.
  11. ta. i did find that screw, but it didn't seem to be the key to removal. i'll have another go and try harder tomorrow. i'll let you know how i get on with re-fitting
  12. looks like the washer pipe has frozen/fallen off inside the tailgate of my 08 octavia estate. i'd fix it, but it's not obvious how the hatch interior trim comes off. i tried a search, but couldn't find anything. to avoid damage, perhaps someone could point me in the right direction? TIA
  13. i've done it to see what it's like. found it's very like a waste of time and effort.
  14. clearly your dad wasn't much of a pedant. (i) the clutch is always slipped when engaging or disengaging. it's the degree to which it is done that is important (i) merely resting one's hand on the gear lever will not wear anything, except maybe the palm of your stringback driving glove. pressuring it towards any of the gear positions might wear something like a selector fork. eventually.
