  1. I went to TPS to go get a new MAF sensor and the part that they quoted me for was an air mass meter for £85. Is the air mass meter just the whole unit with the sensor already fitted in it?
  2. I went to TPS to get a price for a new MAF sensor and they gave me a price for an 'air mass meter'. Does anyone know if this is the same thing, only the whole unit rather than just the sensor by itself? On the diagram it seemed to have the sensor and the whole tube housing. The price was £85 which seemed about right.
  3. I've had my vrs for 2 years now and suspected my fuel consumption was a bit low. I had it checked out when I fisrt got it and then had it checked again today(laptop plugged in on a drive) by my local garage today and they said there was no fault with the MAF or temp sensor, although they did say the turbo was overboosting a little bit. Did you notice any difference in power before and after fitting the new MAF? Also, did you notice if it was smoking a lot before the changeover? I'm thinking about changing mine just for peace of mind, coz it's always niggled me that there might be something not quite right.
  4. It sounds exactly like when my front offside wheel bearing went. It didn't really make a noise until I was going about 55ish. I thought it was tyre noise as they were starting to get low tread. When I replaced the front tyres the sound was still. The tone of the noise was always the same. It didn't increase in pitch with increased speed. When it started kicking in at 30mph I got it checked out and the bearing replaced and the sound dissappeared. Not sure if it's the same thing but that's my experience
  5. Well I put my car in first thing this morning. They rang about 1.5 hours later and said there was a split in the turbo vacuum pipe(I think that's what they said, something along those lines anyway). I got the car back and no problems at all. No extra charge imposed so all's cool in the school. Never doubted them for a moment . Cheers for all your help and advice everyone
  6. What tools/techniques should/shouldn't they use? Just so I can appear a little bit knowledgable when I talk to them tomorrow.
  7. It was an independant garage. I've had them do a timing belt for a previous Fabia with no problems. I've heard there's a quick fix way of doing it with tippex/paint and was assured this wasn't how they do it. I want to ask the right questions to get to the bottom of it tomorrow.
  8. I got my car back from the garage about 3 hours ago after having the timing belt and a full service. When I got the car onto dual carriage-way it didn't seem to have the same power. It didn't have the same punch in the back at just under 2k revs like it normally does but it did seem to pick up ok from about 2.5k revs. After about 20 miles it threw up the engine management light. Obviously i'm taking it back to the garage first thing in the morning but has anyone got any ideas why this might be?
  9. Cheers for the replys guys. Can you tell me what a clutch switch does?
  10. Has anybody got any thoughts on this? When I go to change gear, especially 1st to 2nd it's like I have come off the gas pedal late so that the revs linger and don't drop down as quick. The accelerator pedal isn't sticking. Could it be a faulty throttle body? ...or something else? Any ideas would be much appreciated :wonder:
  11. It doesn't appear to be this. If I rev the engine in neutral the revs seem to drop down as normal. It only seems to be when changing up through the gears.
  12. I wonder if anyone can help with this mystery. Recently when I go to change gear the revs seem to take a split second longer to drop down when coming off the gas pedal. This results in a jumpy gear change if done quickly as the revs haven't had time to settle. It's very subtle but I work as a driving instructor so I am quite sensitive to any changes in the car. I thought it might just be me but a few of my pupils have noticed the change as well. Any ideas why this might be?
  13. Cheers for the reply. I think my best solution is to take it to the Skoda garage to get someone that knows the car a little bit better. The independent one round the corner from mine(very convenient) are great for most things but I've always had problems when it's come down to matters of suspension/allignment/geomotry and the likes.
  14. Aye it's a proper strange one seeing as they haven't adjusted the tracking or anything. I swapped the wheels around and it's exactly the same(this has worked for me previously). Everything about how it tracks and steers is spot on, it's just when the steering wheel wants to centre it is still turned to the right slightly which it didn't do before. This might sound incredibly stupid but does anyone know if the pinion can jump a tooth on the steering rack if both the wheels are off the ground when they're testing the bushings?
  15. I recieved my car back from the garage yesterday where it's just had a full service and two new front tyres. When I got it back the steering wheel isn't centered anymore. They checked all the bushings, did an allignment and said they didn't adjust anything. I tried changing the front wheels round but no difference and it's definately not because of the camber of the road. On the left hand side of a normal camber the wheel does have to be a bit to the right but the steering wheel has to be noticeably more to the right than before. I took it back to the garage this morning and he doesn't have any ideas. The same thing also happened with a previous Fabia I had. Any ideas anybody?
  16. When I first started having a look at Fabias about 4 year ago, I test drove one that did exactly the same thing. I then bought one which was fine at first but then must of short circuited to do what it says above. It's a common fault and something I just lived with. The mirror controls work fine with my current Fabia. I wonder if it's got anything to do with people leaving the heated mirrors on all the time? Something I used to do but don't anymore.
  17. Hi there. Just realised yesterday that my hand brake feels loose and I have to pull it up very high for it to work properly. I've done a search and seen a couple of other people have had the same problem seemingly for no reason. Someone said to take the back tray off and tighten a 10mm nut underneath it. Can anyone tell me how the tray comes off? When attempting things like this I usually get frustrated very quickly and resort to brute force far too quickly. Any help would is greatly appreciated
  18. Sorted. The electric mirror fuse had blown and it seemed to knock out the electric windows as well. Cheers
  19. My wing mirrors won't adjust any more and my electric windows have stopped working. I'm hoping this is just a simple fuse issue although I don't know which fuse it is because the diagram in the manual seems to be for a left hand drive car which is a mirror image of mine. I'm a driving instructor so the mirrors get adjusted all the time. Any ideas?
  20. Funnily enough I've got the same problem and also Bosch blades. I've never replaced them so I don't know if it's them at fault or not.
  21. Would this be the sign of a fault?(I'm no mechanic)
  22. I'm actually a driving instructor and, although I'm not a stranger to a "passionate run" I was actually on a lesson at the time, tootling about far too slow for anybody elses liking. The temp gauge was normal and when I opened the bonnet it cleared in about 10 seconds so I couldn't find out where it was coming from. Puzzled I am
  23. Haha. I hope the title grabbed your attention. I had a bit of a mysterious incident earlier on today. I had just been on a 20 mile run round the doors this morning and, just as I pulled up at the side of the road, I heard a sound rather like someone blipping a power hose. At first I thought it was coming from outside but then realised there was steam/mist(not smoke) coming from under the bonnet. I turned the engine off, jumped out the car and popped the bonnet open to try see where it was coming from. It cleared fairly quickly so, after about 5 minutes, started it up again and nothing wrong. I've driven another 100 miles since then and nowts the matter. Anyone got any ideas what it could be?
  24. Can anybody tell me where I can find the pollen filter on a 56 fabia vrs?
